    Network unfairness in dragonfly topologies

    Dragonfly networks arrange network routers in a two-level hierarchy, providing a competitive cost-performance solution for large systems. Non-minimal adaptive routing (adaptive misrouting) is employed to fully exploit the path diversity and increase the performance under adversarial traffic patterns. Network fairness issues arise in the dragonfly for several combinations of traffic pattern, global misrouting and traffic prioritization policy. Such unfairness prevents a balanced use of the resources across the network nodes and degrades severely the performance of any application running on an affected node. This paper reviews the main causes behind network unfairness in dragonflies, including a new adversarial traffic pattern which can easily occur in actual systems and congests all the global output links of a single router. A solution for the observed unfairness is evaluated using age-based arbitration. Results show that age-based arbitration mitigates fairness issues, especially when using in-transit adaptive routing. However, when using source adaptive routing, the saturation of the new traffic pattern interferes with the mechanisms employed to detect remote congestion, and the problem grows with the network size. This makes source adaptive routing in dragonflies based on remote notifications prone to reduced performance, even when using age-based arbitration.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    OFAR-CM: Efficient Dragonfly networks with simple congestion management

    Dragonfly networks are appealing topologies for large-scale Data center and HPC networks, that provide high throughput with low diameter and moderate cost. However, they are prone to congestion under certain frequent traffic patterns that saturate specific network links. Adaptive non-minimal routing can be used to avoid such congestion. That kind of routing employs longer paths to circumvent local or global congested links. However, if a distance-based deadlock avoidance mechanism is employed, more Virtual Channels (VCs) are required, what increases design complexity and cost. OFAR (On-the-Fly Adaptive Routing) is a previously proposed routing that decouples VCs from deadlock avoidance, making local and global misrouting affordable. However, the severity of congestion with OFAR is higher, as it relies on an escape sub network with low bisection bandwidth. Additionally, OFAR allows for unlimited misroutings on the escape sub network, leading to unbounded paths in the network and long latencies. In this paper we propose and evaluate OFAR-CM, a variant of OFAR combined with a simple congestion management (CM) mechanism which only relies on local information, specifically the credit count of the output ports in the local router. With simple escape sub networks such as a Hamiltonian ring or a tree, OFAR outperforms former proposals with distance-based deadlock avoidance. Additionally, although long paths are allowed in theory, in practice packets arrive at their destination in a small number of hops.     Throughput Unfairness in Dragonfly Networks under Realistic Traffic Patterns

    Dragonfly networks have a two-level hierarchical arrangement of the network routers, and allow for a competitive cost-performance solution in large systems. Nonminimal adaptive routing is employed to fully exploit the path diversity and increase the performance under adversarial traffic patterns. Throughput unfairness prevents a balanced use of the resources across the network nodes and degrades severely the performance of any application running on an affected node. Previous works have demonstrated the presence of throughput unfairness in Dragonflies under certain adversarial traffic patterns, and proposed different alternatives to effectively combat such effect. In this paper we introduce a new traffic pattern denoted adversarial consecutive (ADVc), which portrays a real use case, and evaluate its impact on network performance and throughput fairness. This traffic pattern is the most adversarial in terms of network fairness. Our evaluations, both with or without transit-over-injection priority, show that global misrouting policies do not properly alleviate this problem. Therefore, explicit fairness mechanisms are required for these networks

    On-the-Fly Adaptive Routing for dragonfly interconnection networks

    Adaptive deadlock-free routing mechanisms are required to handle variable traffic patterns in dragonfly networks. However, distance-based deadlock avoidance mechanisms typically employed in Dragonflies increase the router cost and complexity as a function of the maximum allowed path length. This paper presents on-the-fly adaptive routing (OFAR), a routing/flow-control scheme that decouples the routing and the deadlock avoidance mechanisms. OFAR allows for in-transit adaptive routing with local and global misrouting, without imposing dependencies between virtual channels, and relying on a deadlock-free escape subnetwork to avoid deadlock. This model lowers latency, increases throughput, and adapts faster to transient traffic than previously proposed mechanisms. The low capacity of the escape subnetwork makes it prone to congestion. A simple congestion management mechanism based on injection restriction is considered to avoid such issues. Finally, reliability is considered by introducing mechanisms to find multiple edge-disjoint Hamiltonian rings embedded on the dragonfly, allowing to use multiple escape subnetworks

    Topological Characterization of Hamming and Dragonfly Networks and its Implications on Routing

    Current HPC and datacenter networks rely on large-radix routers. Hamming graphs (Cartesian products of complete graphs) and dragonflies (two-level direct networks with nodes organized in groups) are some direct topologies proposed for such networks. The original definition of the dragonfly topology is very loose, with several degrees of freedom such as the inter- and intra-group topology, the specific global connectivity and the number of parallel links between groups (or trunking level). This work provides a comprehensive analysis of the topological properties of the dragonfly network, providing balancing conditions for network dimensioning, as well as introducing and classifying several alternatives for the global connectivity and trunking level. From a topological study of the network, it is noted that a Hamming graph can be seen as a canonical dragonfly topology with a large level of trunking. Based on this observation and by carefully selecting the global connectivity, the Dimension Order Routing (DOR) mechanism safely used in Hamming graphs is adapted to dragonfly networks with trunking. The resulting routing algorithms approximate the performance of minimal, non-minimal and adaptive routings typically used in dragonflies, but without requiring virtual channels to avoid packet deadlock, thus allowing for lower-cost router implementations. This is obtained by selecting properly the link to route between groups, based on a graph coloring of the network routers. Evaluations show that the proposed mechanisms are competitive to traditional solutions when using the same number of virtual channels, and enable for simpler implementations with lower cost. Finally, multilevel dragonflies are discussed, considering how the proposed mechanisms could be adapted to them

    Exploiting Properties of CMP Cache Traffic in Designing Hybrid Packet/Circuit Switched NoCs

    Chip multiprocessors with few to tens of processing cores are already commercially available. Increased scaling of technology is making it feasible to integrate even more cores on a single chip. Providing the cores with fast access to data is vital to overall system performance. When a core requires access to a piece of data, the core's private cache memory is searched first. If a miss occurs, the data is looked up in the next level(s) of the memory hierarchy, where often one or more levels of cache are shared between two or more cores. Communication between the cores and the slices of the on-chip shared cache is carried through the network-on-chip(NoC). Interestingly, the cache and NoC mutually affect the operation of each other; communication over the NoC affects the access latency of cache data, while the cache organization generates the coherence and data messages, thus affecting the communication patterns and latency over the NoC. This thesis considers hybrid packet/circuit switched NoCs, i.e., packet switched NoCs enhanced with the ability to configure circuits. The communication and performance benefit that come from using circuits is predicated on amortizing the time cost incurred for configuring the circuits. To address this challenge, NoC designs are proposed that take advantage of properties of the cache traffic, namely temporal locality and predictability, to amortize or hide the circuit configuration time cost. First, a coarse-grained circuit configuration policy is proposed that exploits the temporal locality in the cache traffic to periodically configure circuits for the heavily communicating nodes. This allows the design of a locality-aware cache that promotes temporal communication locality through data placement, while designing suitable data replacement and migration policies. Next, a fine-grained configuration policy, called Déjà Vu switching, is proposed for leveraging predictability of data messages by initiating a circuit configuration as soon as a cache hit is detected and before the data becomes available. Its benefit is demonstrated for saving interconnect energy in multi-plane NoCs. Finally, a more proactive configuration policy is proposed for fast caches, where circuit reservations are initiated by request messages, which can greatly improve communication latency and system performance

    FlexVC: Flexible virtual channel management in low-diameter networks

    Deadlock avoidance mechanisms for lossless lowdistance networks typically increase the order of virtual channel (VC) index with each hop. This restricts the number of buffer resources depending on the routing mechanism and limits performance due to an inefficient use. Dynamic buffer organizations increase implementation complexity and only provide small gains in this context because a significant amount of buffering needs to be allocated statically to avoid congestion. We introduce FlexVC, a simple buffer management mechanism which permits a more flexible use of VCs. It combines statically partitioned buffers, opportunistic routing and a relaxed distancebased deadlock avoidance policy. FlexVC mitigates Head-of-Line blocking and reduces up to 50% the memory requirements. Simulation results in a Dragonfly network show congestion reduction and up to 37.8% throughput improvement, outperforming more complex dynamic approaches. FlexVC merges different flows of traffic in the same buffers, which in some cases makes more difficult to identify the traffic pattern in order to support nonminimal adaptive routing.     Predictive and distributed routing balancing (PR-DRB) : high speed interconnection networks

    Current parallel applications running on clusters require the use of an interconnection network to perform communications among all computing nodes available. Imbalance of communications can produce network congestion, reducing throughput and increasing latency, degrading the overall system performance. On the other hand, parallel applications running on these networks posses representative stages which allow their characterization, as well as repetitive behavior that can be identified on the basis of this characterization. This work presents the Predictive and Distributed Routing Balancing (PR-DRB), a new method developed to gradually control network congestion, based on paths expansion, traffic distribution and effective traffic load, in order to maintain low latency values. PR-DRB monitors messages latencies on intermediate routers, makes decisions about alternative paths and record communication pattern information encountered during congestion situation. Based on the concept of applications repetitiveness, best solution recorded are reapplied when saved communication pattern re-appears. Traffic congestion experiments were conducted in order to evaluate the performance of the method, and improvements were observed.Les aplicacions paral·leles actuals en els Clústers requereixen l'ús d'una xarxa d'interconnexió per comunicar a tots els nodes de còmput disponibles. El desequilibri en la càrrega de comunicacions pot congestionar la xarxa, incrementant la latència i disminuint el throughput, degradant el rendiment total del sistema. D'altra banda, les aplicacions paral·leles que s'executen sobre aquestes xarxes contenen etapes representatives durant la seva execució les quals permeten caracteritzar-les, a més d'extraure un comportament repetitiu que pot ser identificat en base a aquesta caracterització. Aquest treball presenta el Balanceig Predictiu de Encaminament Distribuït (PR-DRB), un nou mètode desenvolupat per controlar la congestió a la xarxa en forma gradual, basat en l'expansió de camins, la distribució de trànsit i càrrega efectiva actual per tal de mantenir una latència baixa. PR-DRB monitoritza la latència dels missatges en els encaminadors, pren decisions sobre els camins alternatius a utilitzar i registra la informació de la congestió sobre la base del patró de comunicacions detectat, utilitzant com a concepte base la repetitivitat de les aplicacions per després tornar a aplicar la millor solució quan aquest patró es repeteixi. Experiments de trànsit amb congestió van ser portats a terme per avaluar el rendiment del mètode, els quals van mostrar la bondat del mateix.Las aplicaciones paralelas actuales en los Clústeres requieren el uso de una red de interconexión para comunicar a todos los nodos de cómputo disponibles. El desbalance en la carga de comunicaciones puede congestionar la red, incrementando la latencia y disminuyendo el throughput, degradando el rendimiento total del sistema. Por otro lado, las aplicaciones paralelas que corren sobre estas redes contienen etapas representativas durante su ejecución las cuales permiten caracterizarlas, además de un comportamiento repetitivo que puede ser identificado en base a dicha caracterización. Este trabajo presenta el Balanceo Predictivo de Encaminamiento Distribuido (PR-DRB), un nuevo método desarrollado para controlar la congestión en la red en forma gradual; basado en la expansión de caminos, la distribución de tráfico y carga efectiva actual, a fin de mantener una latencia baja. PR-DRB monitorea la latencia de los mensajes en los encaminadores, toma decisiones sobre los caminos alternativos a utilizar y registra la información de la congestión en base al patrón de comunicaciones detectado, usando como concepto base la repetitividad de las aplicaciones para luego volver a aplicar la mejor solución cuando dicho patrón se repita.     The advancement of manufacturing technologies has enabled the integration of more intellectual property (IP) cores on the same system-on-chip (SoC). Scalable and high throughput on-chip communication architecture has become a vital component in today's SoCs. Diverse technologies such as electrical, wireless, optical, and hybrid are available for on-chip communication with different architectures supporting them. Security of the on-chip communication is crucial because exploiting any vulnerability would be a goldmine for an attacker.     Non-minimal adaptive routing for efficient interconnection networks

    RESUMEN: La red de interconexión es un concepto clave de los sistemas de computación paralelos. El primer aspecto que define una red de interconexión es su topología. Habitualmente, las redes escalables y eficientes en términos de coste y consumo energético tienen bajo diámetro y se basan en topologías que encaran el límite de Moore y en las que no hay diversidad de caminos mínimos. Una vez definida la topología, quedando implícitamente definidos los límites de rendimiento de la red, es necesario diseñar un algoritmo de enrutamiento que se acerque lo máximo posible a esos límites y debido a la ausencia de caminos mínimos, este además debe explotar los caminos no mínimos cuando el tráfico es adverso. Estos algoritmos de enrutamiento habitualmente seleccionan entre rutas mínimas y no mínimas en base a las condiciones de la red. Las rutas no mínimas habitualmente se basan en el algoritmo de balanceo de carga propuesto por Valiant, esto implica que doblan la longitud de las rutas mínimas y por lo tanto, la latencia soportada por los paquetes se incrementa. En cuanto a la tecnología, desde su introducción en entornos HPC a principios de los años 2000, Ethernet ha sido usado en un porcentaje representativo de los sistemas. Esta tesis introduce una implementación realista y competitiva de una red escalable y sin pérdidas basada en dispositivos de red Ethernet commodity, considerando topologías de bajo diámetro y bajo consumo energético y logrando un ahorro energético de hasta un 54%. Además, propone un enrutamiento sobre la citada arquitectura, en adelante QCN-Switch, el cual selecciona entre rutas mínimas y no mínimas basado en notificaciones de congestión explícitas. Una vez implementada la decisión de enrutar siguiendo rutas no mínimas, se introduce un enrutamiento adaptativo en fuente capaz de adaptar el número de saltos en las rutas no mínimas. Este enrutamiento, en adelante ACOR, es agnóstico de la topología y mejora la latencia en hasta un 28%. Finalmente, se introduce un enrutamiento dependiente de la topología, en adelante LIAN, que optimiza el número de saltos de las rutas no mínimas basado en las condiciones de la red. Los resultados de su evaluación muestran que obtiene una latencia cuasi óptima y mejora el rendimiento de algoritmos de enrutamiento actuales reduciendo la latencia en hasta un 30% y obteniendo un rendimiento estable y equitativo.ABSTRACT: Interconnection network is a key concept of any parallel computing system. The first aspect to define an interconnection network is its topology. Typically, power and cost-efficient scalable networks with low diameter rely on topologies that approach the Moore bound in which there is no minimal path diversity. Once the topology is defined, the performance bounds of the network are determined consequently, so a suitable routing algorithm should be designed to accomplish as much as possible of those limits and, due to the lack of minimal path diversity, it must exploit non-minimal paths when the traffic pattern is adversarial. These routing algorithms usually select between minimal and non-minimal paths based on the network conditions, where the non-minimal paths are built according to Valiant load-balancing algorithm. This implies that these paths double the length of minimal ones and then the latency supported by packets increases. Regarding the technology, from its introduction in HPC systems in the early 2000s, Ethernet has been used in a significant fraction of the systems. This dissertation introduces a realistic and competitive implementation of a scalable lossless Ethernet network for HPC environments considering low-diameter and low-power topologies. This allows for up to 54% power savings. Furthermore, it proposes a routing upon the cited architecture, hereon QCN-Switch, which selects between minimal and non-minimal paths per packet based on explicit congestion notifications instead of credits. Once the miss-routing decision is implemented, it introduces two mechanisms regarding the selection of the intermediate switch to develop a source adaptive routing algorithm capable of adapting the number of hops in the non-minimal paths. This routing, hereon ACOR, is topology-agnostic and improves average latency in all cases up to 28%. Finally, a topology-dependent routing, hereon LIAN, is introduced to optimize the number of hops in the non-minimal paths based on the network live conditions.
