    Machine learning methods for sign language recognition: a critical review and analysis.

    Sign language is an essential tool to bridge the communication gap between normal and hearing-impaired people. However, the diversity of over 7000 present-day sign languages with variability in motion position, hand shape, and position of body parts making automatic sign language recognition (ASLR) a complex system. In order to overcome such complexity, researchers are investigating better ways of developing ASLR systems to seek intelligent solutions and have demonstrated remarkable success. This paper aims to analyse the research published on intelligent systems in sign language recognition over the past two decades. A total of 649 publications related to decision support and intelligent systems on sign language recognition (SLR) are extracted from the Scopus database and analysed. The extracted publications are analysed using bibliometric VOSViewer software to (1) obtain the publications temporal and regional distributions, (2) create the cooperation networks between affiliations and authors and identify productive institutions in this context. Moreover, reviews of techniques for vision-based sign language recognition are presented. Various features extraction and classification techniques used in SLR to achieve good results are discussed. The literature review presented in this paper shows the importance of incorporating intelligent solutions into the sign language recognition systems and reveals that perfect intelligent systems for sign language recognition are still an open problem. Overall, it is expected that this study will facilitate knowledge accumulation and creation of intelligent-based SLR and provide readers, researchers, and practitioners a roadmap to guide future direction

    A Robotic Writing Framework-Learning Human Aesthetic Preferences via Human-Machine Interactions

    Intelligent robots are required to fully understand human intentions and operations in order to support or collaborate with humans to complete complicated tasks, which is typically implemented by employing human-machine interaction techniques. This paper proposes a new robotic learning framework to perform numeral writing tasks by investigating human-machine interactions with human preferences. In particular, the framework implements a trajectory generative module using a generative adversarial network (GAN)-based method and develops a human preference feedback system to enable the robot to learn human preferences. In addition, a convolutional neural network, acting as a discriminative network, classifies numeral images to support the development of the basic numeral writing ability, and another convolutional neural network, acting as a human preference network, learns a human user’s aesthetic preference by taking the feedback on two written numerical images during the training process. The experimental results show that the written numerals based on the preferences of ten users were different from those of the training data set and that the writing models with the preferences from different users generate numerals in different styles, as evidenced by the Fréchet inception distance (FID) scores. The FID scores of the proposed framework with a preference network were noticeably greater than those of the framework without a preference network. This phenomenon indicates that the human-machine interactions effectively guided the robotic system to learn different writing styles. These results prove that the proposed approach is able to enable the calligraphy robot to successfully write numerals in accordance with the preferences of a human user

    A GPT-Based Approach for Scientometric Analysis: Exploring the Landscape of Artificial Intelligence Research

    This study presents a comprehensive approach that addresses the challenges of scientometric analysis in the rapidly evolving field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). By combining search terms related to AI with the advanced language processing capabilities of generative pre-trained transformers (GPT), we developed a highly accurate method for identifying and analyzing AI-related articles in the Web of Science (WoS) database. Our multi-step approach included filtering articles based on WoS citation topics, category, keyword screening, and GPT classification. We evaluated the effectiveness of our method through precision and recall calculations, finding that our combined approach captured around 94% of AI-related articles in the entire WoS corpus with a precision of 90%. Following this, we analyzed the publication volume trends, revealing a continuous growth pattern from 2013 to 2022 and an increasing degree of interdisciplinarity. We conducted citation analysis on the top countries and institutions and identified common research themes using keyword analysis and GPT. This study demonstrates the potential of our approach to facilitate accurate scientometric analysis, by providing insights into the growth, interdisciplinary nature, and key players in the field.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures, 5 table

However, tracking and monitoring critical cases/conditions of elderly and patients is a great challenge. Healthcare services for those people are crucial in order to achieve high safety consideration. Physical human activity recognition using wearable devices is used to monitor and recognize human activities for elderly and patient. The main aim of this review study is to highlight the human activity recognition chain, which includes, sensing technologies, preprocessing and segmentation, feature extractions methods, and classification techniques. Challenges and future trends are also highlighted.

    Recognition of handwritten Arabic characters

    The subject of handwritten character recognition has been receiving considerable attention in recent years due to the increased dependence on computers. Several methods for recognizing Latin, Chinese as well as Kanji characters have been proposed. However, work on recognition of Arabic characters has been relatively sparse. Techniques developed for recognizing characters in other languages can not be used for Arabic since the nature of Arabic characters is different. The shape of a character is a function of its location within a word where each character can have two to four different forms. Most of the techniques proposed to date for recognizing Arabic characters have relied on structural and topographic approaches. This thesis introduces a decision-theoretic approach to solve the problem. The proposed method involves, as a first step, digitization of the segmented character. The secondary part of the character (dots and zigzags) are then isolated and identified separately thereby reducing the recognition issue to a 20 class problem or less for each of the character forms. The moments of the horizontal and vertical projections of the remaining primary characters are calculated and normalized with respect to the zero order moment. Simple measures of shape are obtained from the normalized moments and incorporated into a feature vector. Classification is accomplished using quadratic discriminant functions. The approach was evaluated using isolated, handwritten characters from a data base established for this purpose. The classification rates varied from 97.5% to 100% depending on the form of the characters. These results indicate that the technique offers significantly better classification rates in comparison with existing methods

In this scenario the need for ad-hoc strategies for the development of low-power and low-latency intelligent systems capable of learning inductive rules from data using a modest mount of computational resources is becoming vital. At the same time, one needs to develop specic methodologies to manage complex patterns such as text and images. This Thesis presents different approaches and techniques for the development of fast learning models explicitly designed to be hosted on embedded systems. The proposed methods proved able to achieve state-of-the-art performances in term of the trade-off between generalization capabilities and area requirements when implemented in low-cost digital devices.
