    A Two-Level Approach to Characterizing Human Activities from Wearable Sensor Data

    International audienceThe rapid emergence of new technologies in recent decades has opened up a world of opportunities for a better understanding of human mobility and behavior. It is now possible to recognize human movements, physical activity and the environments in which they take place. And this can be done with high precision, thanks to miniature sensors integrated into our everyday devices. In this paper, we explore different methodologies for recognizing and characterizing physical activities performed by people wearing new smart devices. Whether it's smartglasses, smartwatches or smartphones, we show that each of these specialized wearables has a role to play in interpreting and monitoring moments in a user's life. In particular, we propose an approach that splits the concept of physical activity into two sub-categories that we call micro-and macro-activities. Micro-and macro-activities are supposed to have functional relationship with each other and should therefore help to better understand activities on a larger scale. Then, for each of these levels, we show different methods of collecting, interpreting and evaluating data from different sensor sources. Based on a sensing system we have developed using smart devices, we build two data sets before analyzing how to recognize such activities. Finally, we show different interactions and combinations between these scales and demonstrate that they have the potential to lead to new classes of applications, involving authentication or user profiling

    Towards the internet of smart clothing: a review on IoT wearables and garments for creating intelligent connected e-textiles

    [Abstract] Technology has become ubiquitous, it is all around us and is becoming part of us. Togetherwith the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm and enabling technologies (e.g., Augmented Reality (AR), Cyber-Physical Systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain or edge computing), smart wearables and IoT-based garments can potentially have a lot of influence by harmonizing functionality and the delight created by fashion. Thus, smart clothes look for a balance among fashion, engineering, interaction, user experience, cybersecurity, design and science to reinvent technologies that can anticipate needs and desires. Nowadays, the rapid convergence of textile and electronics is enabling the seamless and massive integration of sensors into textiles and the development of conductive yarn. The potential of smart fabrics, which can communicate with smartphones to process biometric information such as heart rate, temperature, breathing, stress, movement, acceleration, or even hormone levels, promises a new era for retail. This article reviews the main requirements for developing smart IoT-enabled garments and shows smart clothing potential impact on business models in the medium-term. Specifically, a global IoT architecture is proposed, the main types and components of smart IoT wearables and garments are presented, their main requirements are analyzed and some of the most recent smart clothing applications are studied.     Wearable devices for ergonomics: A systematic literature review

    Wearable devices are pervasive solutions for increasing work efficiency, improving workers’ well-being, and creating interactions between users and the environment anytime and anywhere. Although several studies on their use in various fields have been performed, there are no systematic reviews on their utilisation in ergonomics. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review to identify wearable devices proposed in the scientific literature for ergonomic purposes and analyse how they can support the improvement of ergonomic conditions. Twenty-eight papers were retrieved and analysed thanks to eleven comparison dimensions related to ergonomic factors, purposes, and criteria, populations, application and validation. The majority of the available devices are sensor systems composed of different types and numbers of sensors located in diverse body parts. These solutions also represent the technology most frequently employed for monitoring and reducing the risk of awkward postures. In addition, smartwatches, body-mounted smartphones, insole pressure systems, and vibrotactile feedback interfaces have been developed for evaluating and/or controlling physical loads or postures. The main results and the defined framework of analysis provide an overview of the state of the art of smart wearables in ergonomics, support the selection of the most suitable ones in industrial and non-industrial settings, and suggest future research directions

    Wearable sensors for learning enhancement in higher education

    Wearable sensors have traditionally been used to measure and monitor vital human signs for well-being and healthcare applications. However, there is a growing interest in using and deploying these technologies to facilitate teaching and learning, particularly in a higher education environment. The aim of this paper is therefore to systematically review the range of wearable devices that have been used for enhancing the teaching and delivery of engineering curricula in higher education. Moreover, we compare the advantages and disadvantages of these devices according to the location in which they are worn on the human body. According to our survey, wearable devices for enhanced learning have mainly been worn on the head (e.g., eyeglasses), wrist (e.g., watches) and chest (e.g., electrocardiogram patch). In fact, among those locations, head-worn devices enable better student engagement with the learning materials, improved student attention as well as higher spatial and visual awareness. We identify the research questions and discuss the research inclusion and exclusion criteria to present the challenges faced by researchers in implementing learning technologies for enhanced engineering education. Furthermore, we provide recommendations on using wearable devices to improve the teaching and learning of engineering courses in higher education

    Intelligence at the Extreme Edge: A Survey on Reformable TinyML

    The rapid miniaturization of Machine Learning (ML) for low powered processing has opened gateways to provide cognition at the extreme edge (E.g., sensors and actuators). Dubbed Tiny Machine Learning (TinyML), this upsurging research field proposes to democratize the use of Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) on frugal Microcontroller Units (MCUs). MCUs are highly energy-efficient pervasive devices capable of operating with less than a few Milliwatts of power. Nevertheless, many solutions assume that TinyML can only run inference. Despite this, growing interest in TinyML has led to work that makes them reformable, i.e., work that permits TinyML to improve once deployed. In line with this, roadblocks in MCU based solutions in general, such as reduced physical access and long deployment periods of MCUs, deem reformable TinyML to play a significant part in more effective solutions. In this work, we present a survey on reformable TinyML solutions with the proposal of a novel taxonomy for ease of separation. Here, we also discuss the suitability of each hierarchical layer in the taxonomy for allowing reformability. In addition to these, we explore the workflow of TinyML and analyze the identified deployment schemes and the scarcely available benchmarking tools. Furthermore, we discuss how reformable TinyML can impact a few selected industrial areas and discuss the challenges and future directions

    Virtual training for assembly tasks: a framework for the analysis of the cognitive impact on operators

    The importance of training for operators in industrial contexts is widely highlighted in literature. Virtual Reality (VR) technology is considered an efficient solution for training, since it provides immersive, realistic, and interactive simulations environments where the operator can learn-by-doing, far from the risks of the real field. Its efficacy has been demonstrated by several studies, but a proper assessment of the operator’s cognitive response in terms of stress and cognitive load, during the use of such technology, is still lacking. This paper proposes a comprehensive methodology for the analysis of user’s cognitive states, suitable for each kind of training in the industrial sector and beyond. Preliminary feasibility analysis refers to virtual training for assembly of agricultural vehicles. The proposed protocol analysis allowed understanding the operators’ loads to optimize the VR training application, considering the mental demand during the training, and thus avoiding stress, mental overload, improving the user performance
