    Farm 2.0 Using Wordpress to Manage Geocontent and Promote Regional Food Products

    Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies.Recent innovations in geospatial technology have dramatically increased the utility and ubiquity of cartographic interfaces and spatially-referenced content on the web. Capitalizing on these developments, the Farm2.0 system demonstrates an approach to manage user-generated geocontent pertaining to European protected designation of origin (PDO) food products.Wordpress, a popular open-source publishing platform, supplies the framework for a geographic content management system, or GeoCMS, to promote PDO products in the Spanish province of Valencia. The Wordpress platform is modified through a suite of plug-ins and customizations to create an extensible application that could be easily deployed in other regions and administrated cooperatively by distributed regulatory councils. Content, either regional recipes or map locations for vendors and farms, is available for syndication as a GeoRSS feed and aggregated with outside feeds in a dynamic web map

    The Digital Archaeological Atlas of Crete, part of a larger campaign (Digital Crete: Mediterranean Itineraries), was implemented under the framework of the Greek Operational Program “Information Society”, part of the “eEurope” initiative of the European Union which is funded by the 3rd European Community Support Framework. A program module was constructed in order to create a database warehouse for cultural heritage sites on the island of Crete in the South Aegean Sea. A combination of internet-accessible databases, web-GIS techniques and multimedia, provides for the integrated and wide dissemination of cultural information, while contributing to a better understanding of the cultural environment and the influence of the natural environment on the history of the settlement of Crete

    Spatial data management for livestock distribution in Ethiopia

    Ethiopia has the largest livestock population in Africa. It is estimated at 105 million tropical livestock units, which includes 49.3 million heads of cattle, 47 million heads of sheep and goat, 8.3 million equines, 760 thousand camels and a poultry population of 38.13 million. The sector contributes to the livelihood of 60-70% of the Ethiopian population - this translates into approximately 44-52 million people whose subsidiary needs and economic activities rely on livestock production. Understanding the spatial distribution of livestock species is crucial in order to devise a feasible and geographically targeted livestock development policy. The aim of this study is to identify the research gap on the spatial distribution of livestock in LIVES project and to fill the gap by reviewing different literatures and related works. Besides, we proposed and developed a web-based spatial data management application for the LIVES project that makes use of researchers and academicians to have a ground reference to make further research and improve the internal operations of the organization, raises community satisfaction, and simplifies spatial data management and exchange. In order to conduct and justify this project we reviewed different journal articles and related works. In addition we have discussed with the GIS expert of LIVES project. In the mean time we have also collected livestock shape files from the LIVES project so as to use as an input to the proposed prototype web based application. Through the course of this project we were able to observer and identify that the LIVES project handles and manages their spatial data using ArcGIS Desktop application that lacks to handle and render up-to-date and quality livestock information via the web. We believed that having a web based application is necessary to permit timely livestock information dissemination, easy access, and render up-to-date livestock information to the ix public. Furthermore, it improves the efficiency of spatial data management and provides quality of services through the web

    MANAGEMENT PLANS AND WEB-GIS SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS AS ACTIVE AND DYNAMIC TOOLS TO CONSERVE AND VALORIZE HISTORIC PUBLIC GARDENS

    Abstract. Historic gardens are artefacts that evolve in a continuous and unavoidable way, and, at the same time, they are heritage and cultural sites that need to be conserved: the recognition of this dual nature motivates us to seek for new approaches to their management issues. Whilst it is necessary to follow site mutations and valorize its features while dynamically changes the appearance of the garden and the needs of the society, at the same time it is fundamental that an appropriate strategic plan sets a target for the garden, a midmid-long term vision, in order to preserve botanic and documentary value and maintain historic and artistic significance. The paper analyzes historical sources, surveys, thematic maps and interpretations to study historic public gardens, considering complexity and vulnerability of the components an d issues involved in historic gardens and consequent multidisciplinary approach. In order to identify conservation and management criteria it underlines analysis and evaluation of the environmental, architectural, land scape and perceptive features of the historic garden and its surroundings, demonstrating the importance to study the site historic stratification and the site context in order to define preservation goals to prevent decay, to mitigate impacts, to set up maintenance programs and management plans. The aim of this essay is also to highlight the role of GIS and WebGIS applications – targeted at public administrations – that integrate the spatial component (topographic map, ortophoto, physical plans, cadastral maps) and databases about botanic inventories and conservation and valorization treatments of historic public of public gardens.</p

    Seafloor characterization using airborne hyperspectral co-registration procedures independent from attitude and positioning sensors

    The advance of remote-sensing technology and data-storage capabilities has progressed in the last decade to commercial multi-sensor data collection. There is a constant need to characterize, quantify and monitor the coastal areas for habitat research and coastal management. In this paper, we present work on seafloor characterization that uses hyperspectral imagery (HSI). The HSI data allows the operator to extend seafloor characterization from multibeam backscatter towards land and thus creates a seamless ocean-to-land characterization of the littoral zone

    GIS based solar resource analysis for irrigation purposes: Rural areas comparison under groundwater scarcity conditions

    During the past decade, most governments have been promoting energy efficiency programs and the integration of renewable energy sources into the majority of energy uses. Among the different sectors, the agricultural sector is becoming a more active participant to reduce fossil fuel dependence and improve environmental sustainability. Indeed, agriculture usually combines both a high energy demand and water problems associated with over-exploited aquifers, providing great potential and remarkable opportunities to change the energy mix and maximize the use and integration of natural resources in a rational way. Considering this framework, the present paper describes and compares the solar resource integration and its effects on agricultural pumping purposes in two Mediterranean countries, Spain and Morocco, with significant differences in terms of energy mix, climatic conditions and energy policies. As a novel contribution in this paper, we propose the use of GIS to analyze the spatial and temporal variability of the solar resource through real data of both locations, as well as to study groundwater resources. With this aim, two technical proposals for irrigation purposes are compared in terms of environmental benefits, CO2 emissions and agriculture energy model changes: diesel equipment and photovoltaic system. Results based on solar radiation resource, pumping requirements and aquifer depth are included in the paper.The authors appreciate the EU Marenostrum-Erasmus Mundus Program, which allows us to collaborate with the Moulay Ismail University in Meknes (Morocco).     Application of Cloud-Based Geospatial Technologies to Flowering Phenology and Environmental Education

    Cloud-based geospatial technologies are rapidly improving the flow of information from the environment to end-users. Cloud-based photo storage websites were used to create and manage species and spatial-temporal metadata in a digital photographic inventory of plant flowering observations collected at Lake Issaqueena, SC from January, 2012 to December, 2014. Statistical analysis of species and temporal metadata revealed significant (p \u3c 0.05) inter-annual shifts in flowering time among several species during and after extreme high monthly temperature in March, 2012 and extreme high monthly total precipitation in July and August, 2013. An interactive ArcGIS Online map with sampling locations of flowering plants was developed and published. The interactive ArcGIS Online map enables web-based knowledge discovery of flowering phenology by allowing users to filter map contents, view plant pictures, navigate to additional plant information in the USDA PLANTS Database, and render spatial-temporal flowering patterns using the heat map view and time settings. The conceptual workflow for managing, integrating, and mapping plant flowering observations has numerous potential applications in species monitoring, allowing for higher volume and quality data to be collected and shared openly. A Cloud-based ESRI Story Map was developed for teaching Soil Forming Factors: Topography in undergraduate soil science education. Student evaluation of the ESRI Story Map was positive, and responses indicate students broadly preferred the ESRI Story Map as a stand-alone teaching module or as supplemental to PowerPoint slides. Teaching with ESRI Story Maps is very different than GIS education, and is well suited for fostering critical and spatial thinking because students do not need to possess prior skills in GIS software, allowing them to spend more time learning the topic at hand in interactive teaching modules. Teaching with ESRI Story Maps has enormous potential in soil science and other environmental disciplines, but more research is needed to develop specific teaching objectives and exercises using ESRI Story Maps

    A big-data analytics method for capturing visitor activities and flows: the case of an island country

Understanding how people move from one location to another is important both for smart city planners and destination managers. Big-data generated on social media sites have created opportunities for developing evidence-based insights that can be useful for decision-makers. While previous studies have introduced observational data analysis methods for social media data, there remains a need for method development—specifically for capturing people’s movement flows and behavioural details. This paper reports a study outlining a new analytical method, to explore people’s activities, behavioural, and movement details for people monitoring and planning purposes. Our method utilises online geotagged content uploaded by users from various locations. The effectiveness of the proposed method, which combines content capturing, processing and predicting algorithms, is demonstrated through a case study of the Fiji Islands. The results show good performance compared to other relevant methods and show applicability to national decisions and policies
