From Design to Production Control Through the Integration of Engineering Data Management and Workflow Management Systems
At a time when many companies are under pressure to reduce "times-to-market"
the management of product information from the early stages of design through
assembly to manufacture and production has become increasingly important.
Similarly in the construction of high energy physics devices the collection of
(often evolving) engineering data is central to the subsequent physics
analysis. Traditionally in industry design engineers have employed Engineering
Data Management Systems (also called Product Data Management Systems) to
coordinate and control access to documented versions of product designs.
However, these systems provide control only at the collaborative design level
and are seldom used beyond design. Workflow management systems, on the other
hand, are employed in industry to coordinate and support the more complex and
repeatable work processes of the production environment. Commercial workflow
products cannot support the highly dynamic activities found both in the design
stages of product development and in rapidly evolving workflow definitions. The
integration of Product Data Management with Workflow Management can provide
support for product development from initial CAD/CAM collaborative design
through to the support and optimisation of production workflow activities. This
paper investigates this integration and proposes a philosophy for the support
of product data throughout the full development and production lifecycle and
demonstrates its usefulness in the construction of CMS detectors.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figure
Systematic Literature Review: Current Products, Topic, and Implementation of Graph Database
Planning, developing, and updating software cannot be separated from the role of the database. From various types of databases, graph databases are considered to have various advantages over their predecessor, relational databases. Graph databases then become the latest trend in the software and data science industry, apart from the development of graph theory itself. The proliferation of research on GDB in the last decade raises questions about what topics are associated with GDB, what industries use GDB in its data processing, what the GDB models are, and what types of GDB have been used most frequently by users in the last few years. This article aims to answer these questions through a Literature Review, which is carried out by determining objectives, determining the limits of review coverage, determining inclusion and exclusion criteria for data retrieval, data extraction, and quality assessment. Based on a review of 60 studies, several research topics related to GDB are Semantic Web, Big Data, and Parallel computing. A total of 19 (30%) studies used Neo4j as their database. Apart from Social Networks, the industries that implement GDB the most are the Transportation sector, Scientific Article Networks, and general sectors such as Enterprise Data, Biological data, and History data. This Literature Review concludes that research on the topic of the Graph Database is still developing in the future. This is shown by the breadth of application and the variety of new derivatives of GDB products offered by researchers to address existing problems
NOUS: Construction and Querying of Dynamic Knowledge Graphs
The ability to construct domain specific knowledge graphs (KG) and perform
question-answering or hypothesis generation is a transformative capability.
Despite their value, automated construction of knowledge graphs remains an
expensive technical challenge that is beyond the reach for most enterprises and
academic institutions. We propose an end-to-end framework for developing custom
knowledge graph driven analytics for arbitrary application domains. The
uniqueness of our system lies A) in its combination of curated KGs along with
knowledge extracted from unstructured text, B) support for advanced trending
and explanatory questions on a dynamic KG, and C) the ability to answer queries

Big Data and the Internet of Things
Advances in sensing and computing capabilities are making it possible to
embed increasing computing power in small devices. This has enabled the sensing
devices not just to passively capture data at very high resolution but also to
take sophisticated actions in response. Combined with advances in
communication, this is resulting in an ecosystem of highly interconnected
devices referred to as the Internet of Things - IoT. In conjunction, the
advances in machine learning have allowed building models on this ever
increasing amounts of data. Consequently, devices all the way from heavy assets
such as aircraft engines to wearables such as health monitors can all now not
only generate massive amounts of data but can draw back on aggregate analytics
to "improve" their performance over time. Big data analytics has been
identified as a key enabler for the IoT. In this chapter, we discuss various
avenues of the IoT where big data analytics either is already making a
significant impact or is on the cusp of doing so. We also discuss social

Scrap Reduction at EFD
This project, sponsored by Electron Fusion Devices, seeks to provide the groundwork and recommendations for reducing costs resulted from wastes produced within the Injection Molding Department. Extensive background research on both Lean and Six Sigma ideals was first conducted. An analysis of their current scrap tracking tools and processes led to a focus on overall scrap reduction and made a pilot study necessary. We designed a new set of scrap tracking sheets and procedures for data collection and analysis, and recommended future steps for the company\u27s endeavor in reducing scraps
