    The Tractor and Semitrailer Routing Considering Carbon Dioxide Emissions

    The incorporation of the minimization of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the VRP is important to logistics companies. The paper deals with the tractor and semitrailer routing problem with full truckload between any two depots of the network; an integer programming model with the objective of minimizing CO2 emissions per ton-kilometer is proposed. A two-stage approach with the same core steps of the simulated annealing (SA) in both stages is designed. The number of tractors is provided in the first stage and the CO2 emissions per ton-kilometer are then optimized in the second stage. Computational experiments on small-scale randomly generated instances supported the feasibility and validity of the heuristic algorithm. To a practical-scale problem, the SA algorithm can provide advice on the number of tractors, the routes, and the location of the central depot to realize CO2 emissions decrease

    A Hybrid GRASP+VND Heuristic for the Two-Echelon Vehicle Routing Problem Arising in City Logistics

    The two-echelon vehicle routing problem (2E-VRP) is a variant of the classical vehicle routing problem (VRP) arising in twolevel transportation systems such as those encountered in the context of city logistics. In the 2E-VRP, freight from a depot is compulsorily delivered through intermediate depots, named satellites. The first echelons are routes that distribute freight from depot to satellites, and the second are those from satellites to customers. This problem is solved by a hybrid heuristic which is composed of a greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP) with a route-first cluster-second procedure embedded and a variable neighborhood descent (VND), called GRASP+VND hereafter. Firstly, an extended split algorithm in the GRASP continuously splits randomly generated permutations of all customers and assigns customers to satellites reasonably until a feasible assignment appears, and a complete 2E-VRP feasible solution is obtained by solving the first echelon problem subsequently and, secondly, a VND phase attempts to improve this solution until no more improvements can be found. The process above is iterated until the maximum number of iterations is reached. Computational tests conducted on three sets of benchmark instances from the literature show that our algorithm is both effective and efficient and outperforms the best existing heuristics for the 2E-VRP

    Container Swap Trailer Transportation Routing Problem Based on Genetic Algorithm

    In swap trailer transportation routing problems, trucks and trailers conduct swap operations at special positions called trailer points. The parallelization of stevedoring and transportation can be achieved by means of these trailer points. This logistics organization mode can be more effective than the others. In this paper, an integer programming model with capacity and time-window constraints was established. A repairing strategy is embedded in the genetic algorithm (GA) to solve the model. The repairing strategy is executed after the crossover and mutation operation to eliminate the illegal routes. Furthermore, a parameter self-adaptive adjustment policy is designed to improve the convergence. Then numerical experiments are implemented based on the generated datasets; the performance and robustness of the algorithm parameter self-adaptive adjustment policy are discussed. Finally, the results show that the improved algorithm performs better than elementary GA

    The incorporation of CO2 emissions minimization in the vehicle routing problem (VRP) is of critical importance to enterprise practice. Focusing on the tractor and semitrailer routing problem with full truckloads between any two terminals of the network, this paper proposes a mathematical programming model with the objective of minimizing CO2 emissions per ton-kilometer. A simulated annealing (SA) algorithm is given to solve practical-scale problems. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, a lower bound is developed. Computational experiments on various problems generated randomly and a realistic instance are conducted. The results show that the proposed methods are effective and the algorithm can provide reasonable solutions within an acceptable computational time

    RESUMEN: El problema de ruteo de vehículos con flota propia y subcontratación, conocido como Vehicle Routing Problem with Private Fleet and Common Carriers (VRPPC), ha sido abordado a través de distintos métodos, desde heuristicas simples a metaheuristicas de mayor complejidad; sin embargo, los métodos exactos no han sido ampliamente explorados, y la unión entre ambos, llamados métodos cooperativos o matheurísticos, parece ser un área de investigación interesante y prometedora. En esta investigación se presenta un método que integra heurísticas con los métodos exactos para dar solución al VRPPC. Igualmente, se evalúa el efecto del orden en que se recorren los vecindarios sobre la calidad del método de búsqueda local utilizado. Finalmente se compararán los resultados obtenidos con los reportados en la literatura

    The two-echelon capacitated vehicle routing problem: models and math-based heuristics

    Multiechelon distribution systems are quite common in supply-chain and logistics. They are used by public administrations in their transportation and traffic planning strategies, as well as by companies, to model own distribution systems. In the literature, most of the studies address issues relating to the movement of flows throughout the system from their origins to their final destinations. Another recent trend is to focus on the management of the vehicle fleets required to provide transportation among different echelons. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, it introduces the family of two-echelon vehicle routing problems (VRPs), a term that broadly covers such settings, where the delivery from one or more depots to customers is managed by routing and consolidating freight through intermediate depots. Second, it considers in detail the basic version of two-echelon VRPs, the two-echelon capacitated VRP, which is an extension of the classical VRP in which the delivery is compulsorily delivered through intermediate depots, named satellites. A mathematical model for two-echelon capacitated VRP, some valid inequalities, and two math-heuristics based on the model are presented. Computational results of up to 50 customers and four satellites show the effectiveness of the methods developed

    GRASP/VND and multi-start evolutionary local search for the single truck and trailer routing problem with satellite depots

    International audienceIn the single truck and trailer routing problem with satellite depots (STTRPSD) a vehicle composed of a truck with a detachable trailer serves the demand of a set of customers reachable only by the truck without the trailer. This accessibility constraint implies the selection of locations to park the trailer before performing the trips to the customers. We propose two metaheuristics based on greedy randomized adaptive search procedures (GRASP), variable neighborhood descent (VND) and evolutionary local search (ELS) to solve this problem. To evaluate these metaheuristics we test them on a set of 32 randomly generated problems. The computational experiment shows that a multi-start evolutionary local search outperforms a GRASP/VND. Moreover, it obtains competitive results when applied to the multi-depot vehicle routing problem (MDVRP), that can be seen as a special case of the STTRPSD
