    Developing a Generic Debugger for Advanced-Dispatching Languages

    Programming-language research has introduced a considerable number of advanced-dispatching mechanisms in order to improve modularity. Advanced-dispatching mechanisms allow changing the behavior of a function without modifying their call sites and thus make the local behavior of code less comprehensible. Debuggers are tools, thus needed, which can help a developer to comprehend program behavior but current debuggers do not provide inspection of advanced-\ud dispatching-related language constructs. In this paper, we present a debugger which extends a traditional Java debugger with the ability of debugging an advanced-dispatching language constructs and a user interface for inspecting this

    Investigating Effective Inspection of Object-Oriented Code

    Since the development of software inspection over twenty-five years ago it has become established as an effective means of detecting defects. Inspections were originally developed at a time when the procedural paradigm was dominant but, with the Object- Oriented (OO) paradigm growing in influence and use, there now exists a lack of guidance on how to apply inspections to OO systems. Object-oriented and procedural languages differ not only in their syntax but also in a number of more profound ways - the encapsulation of data and associated functionality, the common use of inheritance, and the concepts of polymorphism and dynamic binding. These factors influence the way that modules (classes) are created in OO systems, which in turn influences the way that OO systems are structured and execute. Failure to take this into account may hinder the application of inspections to OO code. This thesis shows that the way in which the objectoriented paradigm distributes related functionality can have a serious impact on code inspection and, to address this problem, it develops and empirically evaluates three code reading techniques

    The Program Dependence Graph was introduced by Ottenstein and Ottenstein in 1984 [14]. It was suggested to be a suitable internal program representation for monolithic programs, for the purpose of carrying out certain software engineering operations such as slicing and the computation of program metrics. Since then, Horwitz et al. have introduced the multi-procedural equivalent System Dependence Graph [9]. Many authors have proposed object-oriented dependence graph construction approaches [11, 10, 20, 12]. Every approach provides its own benefits, some of which are language specific. This paper is based on Java and combines the most important benefits from a range of approaches. The result is a Java System Dependence Graph, which summarises the key benefits offered by different approaches and adapts them (if necessary) to the Java language

    Derived classes as a basis for views in UML/OCL data models

    UML is the de facto standard language for analysis and design in object-oriented frameworks. Information systems, and in particular information systems based on databases and their applications, rely heavily on sound principles of analysis and design. Many present-day database applications employ object-oriented principles in the phases of analysis and design due to the advantages of expressiveness and clarity of such languages as UML. Database specifications often involve specifications of constraints, and the Object Constraint Language (OCL) - as part of UML - can aid in the unambiguous modelling of database constraints. One of the central notions in database modelling and in constraint specifications is the notion of a database view. A database view closely corresponds to the notion of derived class in UML. This paper will show how the notion of a derived class in UML can be given a precise semantics in terms of OCL. We will then demonstrate that the notion of a relational database view can be correctly expressed as a derived class in UML/OCL. A central part of our investigation concerns the generality of our manner of representing relational views in OCL. An important problem that we address in this respect is the representation of product spaces and relational joins. Joins are often essential in view definitions, and we shall demonstrate how we can express Cartesian products and joins within the current framework of UML/OCL language by employing the notions of derived class. As a consequence, OCL will be shown to be equipped with the full expressive power of the relational algebra, offering support for the claim that OCL can be useful as a general query language within the framework of the UML/OCL data model.

    Negative Results in Computer Vision: A Perspective

    A negative result is when the outcome of an experiment or a model is not what is expected or when a hypothesis does not hold. Despite being often overlooked in the scientific community, negative results are results and they carry value. While this topic has been extensively discussed in other fields such as social sciences and biosciences, less attention has been paid to it in the computer vision community. The unique characteristics of computer vision, particularly its experimental aspect, call for a special treatment of this matter. In this paper, I will address what makes negative results important, how they should be disseminated and incentivized, and what lessons can be learned from cognitive vision research in this regard. Further, I will discuss issues such as computer vision and human vision interaction, experimental design and statistical hypothesis testing, explanatory versus predictive modeling, performance evaluation, model comparison, as well as computer vision research culture

    Research priorities for advanced fibrous composites

Supporting evidence is presented in two bodies, including a general literature survey and a survey of aerospace composite hardware and service experience.
