Structural Stability of Lexical Semantic Spaces: Nouns in Chinese and French
Many studies in the neurosciences have dealt with the semantic processing of
words or categories, but few have looked into the semantic organization of the
lexicon thought as a system. The present study was designed to try to move
towards this goal, using both electrophysiological and corpus-based data, and
to compare two languages from different families: French and Mandarin Chinese.
We conducted an EEG-based semantic-decision experiment using 240 words from
eight categories (clothing, parts of a house, tools, vehicles,
fruits/vegetables, animals, body parts, and people) as the material. A
data-analysis method (correspondence analysis) commonly used in computational
linguistics was applied to the electrophysiological signals.
The present cross-language comparison indicated stability for the following
aspects of the languages' lexical semantic organizations: (1) the
living/nonliving distinction, which showed up as a main factor for both
languages; (2) greater dispersion of the living categories as compared to the
nonliving ones; (3) prototypicality of the \emph{animals} category within the
living categories, and with respect to the living/nonliving distinction; and
(4) the existence of a person-centered reference gradient. Our
electrophysiological analysis indicated stability of the networks at play in
each of these processes. Stability was also observed in the data taken from
word usage in the languages (synonyms and associated words obtained from

Plasma sprayed titanium coatings with/without a shroud
Abstract:
Titanium coatings were deposited by plasma spraying with and without a shroud. The titanium coatings were then assessed by scanning electron microscopy. A comparison in microstructure between titanium coatings with and
without the shroud was carried out. The results showed that the shroud played an important role in protecting the titanium particles from oxidation. The presence of
the shroud led to a reduction in coating porosity. The reduction in air entrainment with t he shroud resulted in better heating of the particles, and an enhanced
microstructure with lower porosity in the shrouded titanium coatings were observed compared to the air plasma sprayed counterpart
Nonword Repetition and Interactions Among Vocabulary, Phonotactic probability, and Phonological Awareness in Four Linguistic Groups
The current study was designed to compare the English nonword repetition accuracy in 7-year-old monolingual English, KoreanāEnglish bilingual, ChineseāEnglish bilingual, and SpanishāEnglish bilingual children. The relationships among nonword repetition accuracy, vocabulary, phonological awareness, and phonotactic probability in each group of children were also examined. The results indicated significant differences among the groupsā accuracy of consonants and vowels by syllable length. Different correlational patterns emerged among nonword repetition accuracy, vocabulary, and phonological awareness. Theoretical and clinical implications for the use of nonword repetition tasks for children from various linguistic backgrounds are discussed
Human and Machine Speaker Recognition Based on Short Trivial Events
Trivial events are ubiquitous in human to human conversations, e.g., cough,
laugh and sniff. Compared to regular speech, these trivial events are usually
short and unclear, thus generally regarded as not speaker discriminative and so
are largely ignored by present speaker recognition research. However, these
trivial events are highly valuable in some particular circumstances such as
forensic examination, as they are less subjected to intentional change, so can
be used to discover the genuine speaker from disguised speech. In this paper,
we collect a trivial event speech database that involves 75 speakers and 6
types of events, and report preliminary speaker recognition results on this
database, by both human listeners and machines. Particularly, the deep feature
learning technique recently proposed by our group is utilized to analyze and
recognize the trivial events, which leads to acceptable equal error rates
(EERs) despite the extremely short durations (0.2-0.5 seconds) of these events.
