    Alienation in Capitalism: Rediscovering Fulfillment

Many Americans are pessimistic about their country\u27s medium or long-term economic outlook. A century ago, Big Business was born as an economic force, but it has powerfully infiltrated the realm of politics now. The corporate scramble for natural resources has caused global disharmony and domestic economic conflict in the U.S. The capitalist system, which many have come to realize is unsustainable and oppressive, has thus come to fulfill some of the predictions made by earlier critics from Kierkegaard, Rousseau, to Marx. Each believed that a society which is forced to accommodate an oppressive system will inherently display alienation. That is, a person will begin to feel isolated from himself, unhappy (as amply documented in the growing happiness literature), and work without enthusiasm (resulting in lower productivity). Alienation is inextricably linked with all aspects of our lives; it occurs on a material level and we are forced to deal with it on a daily basis. How then does mankind overcome the difficulties posed by alienation? If not capitalism and democracy, then what? This paper discusses these issues in an attempt to give the reader a better understanding of how to overcome alienation and the problems/root causes associated with it

Ushering in the Fulfillment of Prophecy

During the 19th century, a phenomenon known as “Holy Land mania” was sweeping the United States. Americans were intrigued by the state of the Holy Land and whether or not this state matched the images described in biblical prophecy (Robey 62). Interest in Israel’s condition invaded many aspects of American life, including literature. Looking through the lens of historical criticism, it is easy to see how authors of this time period fed on the “Holy Land mania” to include references to prophecy and the Middle East in their writings. In particular, critic Molly K. Robey accurately points out in her article “Poe and Prophecy” that Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” alludes to biblical prophecy and represents the perceived degeneration of the Promised Land

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay\u27s first paragraph. She found herself at the counter, buying another fifty-dollar dress. The whole scene: the glittering displays - sequins were in - the disorganized and overdressed clerks, the bee-buzz of the fluorescent lights overhead, recalled memories of cupidity and contentment. Apparel. Accessories. She was back to demanding the newest colors, the smartest fit. Even her jeans were fashionably faded on mornings of inhaled Tide, Glamour magazines and quarters disappearing down the slot of the front-loader ...

Fulfillment of administrative and professional obligations of hospitals and mission motivation of physicians

    Get PDF
Background: To be successful, hospitals must increasingly collaborate with their medical staff. One strategic tool that plays an important role is the mission statement of hospitals. The goal of this research was to study the relationship between the fulfillment of administrative and professional obligations of hospitals on physicians' motivation to contribute to the mission of the hospital. Furthermore the mediating role of the physicians' emotional attachment to the hospital and moderation effect of the exchange with the head physicians were considered. Methods: Self-employed physicians of six hospitals participated in a survey. Descriptive analyses and linear regression were used to analyse the data. Results: The results indicate that affective commitment mediated the relationship between psychological contract fulfillment and mission statement motivation. In addition, the quality of exchange with the Chief Medical Officer moderated the relationship between the fulfillment of administrative obligations and affective commitment positively. Conclusion: This study extends our understanding of social exchange processes and mission statement motivation of physicians. We showed that when physicians perceive a high level of fulfillment of their psychological contract they are more committed and more motivated to contribute to the mission statement. A high quality relationship between physician and Chief Medical Officer can enhance this reciprocity dynamic

Ask, and shall you receive?: Understanding Desire Fulfillment in Natural Language Text

The ability to comprehend wishes or desires and their fulfillment is important to Natural Language Understanding. This paper introduces the task of identifying if a desire expressed by a subject in a given short piece of text was fulfilled. We propose various unstructured and structured models that capture fulfillment cues such as the subject's emotional state and actions. Our experiments with two different datasets demonstrate the importance of understanding the narrative and discourse structure to address this task

A proof of fulfillment of the strong bootstrap condition

It is shown that the kernel of the BFKL equation for the octet color state of two Reggeized gluons satisfies the strong bootstrap condition in the next-to-leading order. This condition is much more restrictive than the one obtained from the requirement of Reggeized form for the elastic scattering amplitudes in the next-to-leading approximation. It is necessary, however, for self-consistency of the assumption of Reggeized form of the production amplitudes in multi-Regge kinematics, which are used in the derivation of the BFKL equation. The fulfillment of the strong bootstrap condition for the kernel opens a way to a rigorous proof of the BFKL equation in the next-to-leading approximation.Comment: 20 pages; minor changes in the text in Section 1 (Introduction) and in Section 4 (Discussion); one reference adde
