Emotions in context: examining pervasive affective sensing systems, applications, and analyses
Pervasive sensing has opened up new opportunities for measuring our feelings and understanding our behavior by monitoring our affective states while mobile. This review paper surveys pervasive affect sensing by examining and considering three major elements of affective pervasive systems, namely; âsensingâ, âanalysisâ, and âapplicationâ. Sensing investigates the different sensing modalities that are used in existing real-time affective applications, Analysis explores different approaches to emotion recognition and visualization based on different types of collected data, and Application investigates different leading areas of affective applications. For each of the three aspects, the paper includes an extensive survey of the literature and finally outlines some of challenges and future research opportunities of affective sensing in the context of pervasive computing
Flooding through the lens of mobile phone activity
Natural disasters affect hundreds of millions of people worldwide every year.
Emergency response efforts depend upon the availability of timely information,
such as information concerning the movements of affected populations. The
analysis of aggregated and anonymized Call Detail Records (CDR) captured from
the mobile phone infrastructure provides new possibilities to characterize
human behavior during critical events. In this work, we investigate the
viability of using CDR data combined with other sources of information to
characterize the floods that occurred in Tabasco, Mexico in 2009. An impact map
has been reconstructed using Landsat-7 images to identify the floods. Within
this frame, the underlying communication activity signals in the CDR data have
been analyzed and compared against rainfall levels extracted from data of the
NASA-TRMM project. The variations in the number of active phones connected to
each cell tower reveal abnormal activity patterns in the most affected
locations during and after the floods that could be used as signatures of the
floods - both in terms of infrastructure impact assessment and population
information awareness. The representativeness of the analysis has been assessed
using census data and civil protection records. While a more extensive
validation is required, these early results suggest high potential in using
cell tower activity information to improve early warning and emergency

Geo-located Twitter as the proxy for global mobility patterns
In the advent of a pervasive presence of location sharing services
researchers gained an unprecedented access to the direct records of human
activity in space and time. This paper analyses geo-located Twitter messages in
order to uncover global patterns of human mobility. Based on a dataset of
almost a billion tweets recorded in 2012 we estimate volumes of international
travelers in respect to their country of residence. We examine mobility
profiles of different nations looking at the characteristics such as mobility
rate, radius of gyration, diversity of destinations and a balance of the
inflows and outflows. The temporal patterns disclose the universal seasons of
increased international mobility and the peculiar national nature of overseen
travels. Our analysis of the community structure of the Twitter mobility
network, obtained with the iterative network partitioning, reveals spatially
cohesive regions that follow the regional division of the world. Finally, we
validate our result with the global tourism statistics and mobility models
provided by other authors, and argue that Twitter is a viable source to
understand and quantify global mobility patterns.Comment: 17 pages, 13 figure

How Can Geography and Mobile Phones Contribute to Psychotherapy?
Interdisciplinary relationships between Geography and Psychotherapy are an opportunity for innovation. Indeed, scientific works found on bibliographic databases and concerning this theme are scarce. Geographical sub-fields, such as the Geography of Emotions or Psychoanalytical Geography have started to emerge, theorizing about and interpreting feelings, emotions, moods, sufferings, of the chronically ill or diversified social groups and sites. But a less theoretical and more practical approach, in the sense of proposing, predicting and intervening, is lacking; as well as research into the possibilities offered by communication technologies and mobile phones. In the present work, we present the results of a review of the most relevant scientific works published internationally; we reflect on the contributions of Geography and mobile phones to psychosocial therapies and define the orientation and questions that should be posed in future research, from the point of view of geography and regarding psychotherapy. We conclude that the production of georeferenced data via mobile phones concerning the daily lives of people opens great possibilities for cognitive behavioural therapy and mental health. They allow for the development of personalized mood maps that locate the places where a person experiences greater or lesser stress on a daily basis; they allow for a cartography of emotions, a cognitive cartography of the places we access physically or through the Internet, of our feelings and psychosocial experiences. They open the door to the possibility of offering personalized psychotherapy treatments focusing on the ecological-environmental analysis of the places frequented by the person on a daily basis
A Smartphone-Based System for Outdoor Data Gathering Using a Wireless Beacon Network and GPS Data: From Cyber Spaces to Senseable Spaces
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and mobile devices are deeply influencing all facets of life, directly affecting the way people experience space and time. ICTs are also tools for supporting urban development, and they have also been adopted as equipment for furnishing public spaces. Hence, ICTs have created a new paradigm of hybrid space that can be defined as Senseable Spaces. Even if there are relevant cases where the adoption of ICT has made the use of public open spaces more âsmartâ, the interrelation and the recognition of added value need to be further developed. This is one of the motivations for the research presented in this paper. The main goal of the work reported here is the deployment of a system composed of three different connected elements (a real-world infrastructure, a data gathering system, and a data processing and analysis platform) for analysis of human behavior in the open space of Cardeto Park, in Ancona, Italy. For this purpose, and because of the complexity of this task, several actions have been carried out: the deployment of a complete real-world infrastructure in Cardeto Park, the implementation of an ad-hoc smartphone application for the gathering of participantsâ data, and the development of a data pre-processing and analysis system for dealing with all the gathered data. A detailed description of these three aspects and the way in which they are connected to create a unique system is the main focus of this paper.This work has been supported by the Cost Action TU1306, called CYBERPARKS:

Cross-comparative analysis of evacuation behavior after earthquakes using mobile phone data
Despite the importance of predicting evacuation mobility dynamics after large
scale disasters for effective first response and disaster relief, our general
understanding of evacuation behavior remains limited because of the lack of
empirical evidence on the evacuation movement of individuals across multiple
disaster instances. Here we investigate the GPS trajectories of a total of more
than 1 million anonymized mobile phone users whose positions are tracked for a
period of 2 months before and after four of the major earthquakes that occurred
in Japan. Through a cross comparative analysis between the four disaster
instances, we find that in contrast with the assumed complexity of evacuation
decision making mechanisms in crisis situations, the individuals' evacuation
probability is strongly dependent on the seismic intensity that they
experience. In fact, we show that the evacuation probabilities in all
earthquakes collapse into a similar pattern, with a critical threshold at
around seismic intensity 5.5. This indicates that despite the diversity in the
earthquakes profiles and urban characteristics, evacuation behavior is
similarly dependent on seismic intensity. Moreover, we found that probability
density functions of the distances that individuals evacuate are not dependent
on seismic intensities that individuals experience. These insights from
empirical analysis on evacuation from multiple earthquake instances using large
scale mobility data contributes to a deeper understanding of how people react
to earthquakes, and can potentially assist decision makers to simulate and
predict the number of evacuees in urban areas with little computational time
and cost, by using population density information and seismic intensity which
can be observed instantaneously after the shock
