    From Green IT to Sustainable Innovation

    Sustainable innovation is about creating social, environmental, and economic value for all stakeholders involved. In this paper we propose the sustainable innovation lens as an extension of the prevailing discourses on Green IT/IS. The sustainable innovation lens goes beyond the environmental facet of sustainability—which is the main focus of Green IT/IS—and offers a three-fold approach that encompasses social, environmental and economic dimensions of sustainability. Moreover, sustainable innovation provides a potent proactive approach to IT/IS development and management by focusing on creating positive solutions to environmental and social challenges rather than on reducing and managing IT footprint. Building on a longitudinal study of Hewlett-Packard, we demonstrate how a company can widen its perspective from Green IT to sustainable innovation, and then illustrate how the latter has a greater potential for change and innovation

    The concept of green innovation refers to innovation that seeks to make radical or progressive improvements to products or processes that contribute to sustainable development. Green innovation can improve the global image of a business and lead to better market performance. Green innovation projects can contribute to economic growth and a positive quality of life without negatively affecting the environment. Consequently, this study aims to examine the relationship between the development of green materials resulting from green innovation and project management. To achieve the research objective, we conducted a multi-case study with companies developing green innovation derived textile. The findings show that the firms surveyed do not use formal project management to execute their green innovation projects and that their project management is intuitive. Although the companies surveyed are concerned with sustainable development and strive to innovate to satisfy their customers responsibly, their project management practices are informal. This study contributes to the practice.     Influence mechanism between information management technologies and green innovation: the role of sustainable firms practices in China

    Despite the proposition of sustainable development goals by the United Nations, the progress shown by the organizations is not satisfactory. It also raised the attention of the policymakers to overcome those challenges by identifying potential solutions. Hence, the current study aims to assess the role of the information and knowledge management process in attaining green innovation in sustainable practices. For this purpose, the data is collected from the 395 organizations operating in China that are ISO 14001 certified. The application of PLS-SEM shows that information and knowledge management significantly and positively enhance all three sustainable practices, which eventually play an encouraging role in green innovation. Additionally, all three types of sustainable practices also reported mediating the relationships between the information and knowledge management process and green innovation. Based on the findings, organizations are recommended to integrate and align sustainable practices, information management, and green innovation with the mission, vision, and routine activities and objectives

    Business model innovation for sustainable development: green technologies and BOP (Bottom of Pyramid) in emerging countries: South Africa and India

It also focuses on the development of the sustainable use of natural resources, to achieve a greater enviable society, therefore giving rise to the green economy (Bigg 2011). To make businesses sustainable, companies are increasingly focusing on green innovation, sustainable business solutions and re-inventing their business models, and expanding to untapped markets such as the bottom of the pyramid (BOP), consisting of more than four billion potential consumers (Farinelli, Bottini, Akkoyunlu & Aerni, 2011). Most research shows growth opportunities of green products in the bottom of pyramid (Olsen & Boxenbaum, 2009), and has increasingly created deliberations all over the world. Also, companies from both developed and developing countries are becoming increasingly interested in BOP. To successfully target the BOP with ‘green’ technologies, companies focus their business models on innovation, sustainability and economic profit, instead of gross margins (Prahalad & Hart, 2008). Very limited research evidence is present that links all these concepts together. And therefore, created an interest to examine how integration of green technology bring changes in business model innovation (BMI) for sustainability at BOP markets. The linkage between concepts - BMI, BOP and green technology, to bring sustainable development, has not been sufficiently explored, and especially with focus on emerging economies like South Africa and India. Therefore, the present research has three fold purposes. Firstly, to analyse and understand factors affecting the existing business models of various companies with green technologies targeting BOP markets for sustainable development. Secondly, the research brings an identification and understanding of number of key factors related to BMI, BOP markets and green technologies for sustainable development, and proposes a conceptual framework based on a series of underpinning relationships among these factors. Thirdly, it testifies the conceptualized theoretical framework on green business model innovation for sustainable development for BOP markets, among large companies. The primary objective of research study is to design a right green business model innovation across companies with green technologies for BOP markets. The secondary objective is to identify and compare the differences and similarities of green business model innovation for BOP markets of both South Africa and India. The present research undertakes a sequential exploratory mixed method approach, and is carried out in three phases: Phase 1: Exploration and study of business model innovation of identified industries/sectors with green technologies, targeting BOP segment for sustainable development, using qualitative research methods to formulate multiple cases. Phase 2: Identification of underpinning factors related to BMI, sustainable development and BOP consumers for green technologies; using qualitative methods and content analysis of results from phase 1, leading to design and development of theoretical framework of green business model innovation for South Africa and India. Phase 3: Testing of conceptualized framework of green business model innovation for sustainable development, using quantitative research methods. The present research tests underpinning factors of emerging green business model innovation for sustainable development, resulting from the qualitative phase, and is used to expand and generalize qualitative findings by using quantitative methods. The findings resulted in linking three theoretical emerging topics in the literature: business model innovation (BMI), green technology for sustainability and BOP. Four cases are developed through 33 face-to-face in-depth interviews with company top executives, using multiple case study approach. Each case comprised of sustainable business model innovation, representing comparison between South Africa and India, across four industries, namely, Energy, Banking, FMCG/Durable sectors and Cloud Computing. Qualitative content analysis and findings resulted in formation of themes and sub-themes and proposed prepositions, depicting the relationship between BMI, BOP, and green technology for sustainability. These prepositions aided in development of conceptual framework and proposed nine hypotheses. The conceptual model is quantitatively surveyed on 206 employees of large companies with focus on BOP markets. The quantitative findings supported all nine hypotheses. Therefore, indicating that integration of green technology is associated with performance of green product/service innovation and green process innovation in a company. Likewise, business model innovation variables; customer interface, infrastructure management and financial aspects, positively impacts sustainability of business model. The contribution of this thesis is in the development of green business model innovation for sustainable development, with focus on BOP markets. This adds to the contextual knowledge and empirical literature on business model innovation, green technologies and BOP markets. Theoretically, it brings better understanding of these concepts, and provides a basis of further research highlighting the importance of innovation while taking account of green economy and BOP. The findings provide marketing practitioners with better understanding of strategies that can be employed to innovate and change their own business models to incorporate green and sustainable initiative for BOP markets.XL201

    Product Ppackaging sustainability and green innovation: exploring the influencing factors for sustainable packaging green innovation in the FMCG packaging supply chain

    The issue of plastic pollution caused by conventional single-use plastic packaging is an increasingly pressing concern globally. Sustainable packaging innovation is regarded as a solution to solve the problem. However, existing literature provides a limited understanding on the complexity of influencing factors on sustainable packaging innovation. Particularly, there is little empirical evidence on compostable packaging innovation. Therefore, this research aims to explore the complexity of influencing factors on sustainable packaging processes in four levels of assessment: (1) To investigate the enablers and barriers in the packaging process from material to the final product. (2) To evaluate organisational factors that contribute to the decision of adopting sustainable materials in packaging. (3) To understand the organisational interrelationship and collaboration within the packaging supply chains, and how such a supply chain relationship may affect the adoption of sustainable packaging material and innovation. (4) To study what green capabilities are required for implementing sustainable packaging design and green innovation. The investigations focus on empirical inquiry in the context of conventional single-use plastic packaging in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry. Compostable packaging is regarded as a green alternative to conventional plastic packaging. This research adopts a qualitative research strategy using a multiple case studies approach. It explores the influencing factors on sustainable packaging & green innovation (SPGI). Six case study companies in the global supply chain from the USA, the UK, China, Israel and Italy are studied. Twenty-four interviews with senior executives are conducted across the case companies. This research is meaningful and timely. It provides novel insights into the complex issue of plastic pollution in the lens of sustainable packaging material innovation.     Modeling the impact of corporate social responsibility on sustainable purchase intentions: insights into brand trust and brand loyalty

    Green innovation performance deals with the strengthening of the organizations for their competence in enhancement of their green image. Current research examines the role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in improving sustainable purchase intentions. In addition, it explores the mediating roles of brand trust and brand loyalty. It also reveals that how CSR is crucial for green innovation performance in Pakistan. This research uses the structural equation model (SEM) analysis technique to investigate the linkage between constructs in the complex research model. This uses a self-administrated survey-based questionnaire and a convenience sampling technique for data collection. The unit of analysis is buyers from textile and clothing brands consisting 373 respondents. The findings revealed that corporate social responsibility had a beneficial impact on Pakistani purchasers’ long-term purchase intentions. Green innovation performance can also be improved by improving CSR. The link between CSR, sustainable buying intentions, and green innovation technology is partially mediated by brand loyalty. Brand trust was identified as a possible link between CSR and brand loyalty. Brand trust and loyalty, interestingly, modulate the link between CSR and sustainable purchase intentions as well as CSR and green innovation performance in a sequential manner. The article’s findings will be useful for academics, specialists, and policymakers as these provide glimpse into textile, clothing, and fashion brands with a focus on CSR to improve green innovation performance, as well as highlighting the most relevant studies on the topic and showcasing trends in research and gaps in the field

    CHALLENGES IN ESTABLISHING SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION

    Within the field of information systems an interest in environmental issues has driven the agenda for research from green IT improvement to sustainable innovation. A challenge yet to investigate is how sustainable innovation involving a cluster of actors from multiple settings should be 1) designed and 2) orchestrated so that the innovation performed enables sustainable change. Processes for launching sustainable innovation should consequently be analysed in order to further investigate this notion. In northern Europe there is today a strong drive towards enabling initiatives utilizing mobile information technology improving the everyday transportation of people. This paper analysis the launch of a research and innovation cluster with the aim to develop information infrastructures and processes that stimulate distributed development of digital services for everyday travel. Events performed during the two-year start-up have been analysed identifying essential actions for network design and innovation orchestration, creating hypotheses, which enables further research about the establishment of sustainable innovation

    Evolution and Trend of Green Technology Innovation Research: Visual Analysis Based on CiteSpace

    Systematically understanding the global characteristics of green technology innovation research and studying the hotspots and trends of international green technology innovation research can provide beneficial directional references for subsequent scholars’ research. Papers on green technology innovation published in the core database of Web of Science from 2007 to 2021 were selected as the research objects. Knowledge map analysis method and CiteSpace software were used for visual analysis, and the trend of published papers,research countries and institutions, authors and keywords of green technology innovation research was summarized. It is found that the research on green technology innovation is on the rise and is the focus of most scholars at present; The publication of papers mainly comes from China, and universities are the main force of research; The research is mainly gathered in technological innovation, environmental regulation and sustainable development, which has very important theoretical value and reference significance for the development of green technology innovation

    How Industry 4.0 technologies and open innovation can improve green innovation performance?

    Purpose – This study investigates the impact of Industry 4.0 technologies on green innovation performance. In this relationship, the mediating role of green innovation behavior is also studied. Moreover, open innovation is tested as a mediator between Industry 4.0 technologies and green innovation behavior. Design/methodology/approach – A quantitative research method is adopted in which a structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 217 manufacturing firms of Malaysia. After collecting data, the partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique is applied to analyze data and test the hypothesis of study. Findings – It is found that Industry 4.0 positively impacts open innovation which leads to green innovation behavior. Also, the former lays positive impact on green innovation behavior which leads to improve green innovation performance. Research limitations/implications – The authors conclude that Industry 4.0 technologies can play an important role to improve green innovation performance of Malaysian manufacturing firms by managing open innovation for green innovation behavior which further improves the green innovation performance. In this context, it is recommended that strategists and policymakers should undertake the role of open innovation and Industry 4.0 technologies to promote environment-friendly innovations and to promote the green behavior in companies. The authors suggest hereby that firms should be given incentives to adopt and utilize Industry 4.0 technologies and collaborative innovation interactions – as they foster a climate for sustainable green innovations (which is also a key component to achieve competitive advantage) and a growing concern nowadays. Practical implications – First of all the research contributes to achieving the broader of United Nations to promote sustainable innovation through green innovations. Moreover, the companies can also incorporate the findings and insights of this study while devising their policies to foster green innovations. Originality/value – This research has done the novel contribution by bridging the gap between open innovation approach and sustainability fields while promoting green innovations in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). These two research fields are rarely studied in previous studies by focusing open innovation particularly. Hence, the authors suggest researchers to undertake these fields to further enhance the level of scholarship between innovation management and sustainability. Also, the authors recommend considering technological orientation and technological absorptive capacity of firms to improve green innovations. The current study has investigated the SMEs perspective in general irrespective to their sectoral differences, thus, for future researchers the authors suggest investigating the sector-wise comparison, i.e. electrical and electronics sector, chemical sector, etc.; or service and manufacturing sector differences

    Green Information Technology as Administrative innovation - Organizational factors for successful implementation: Literature Review

    There is a considerable amount of awareness of environmental issues and corporate responsibility for sustainability. As such, from a technological viewpoint, Green IT has become an important topic in contemporary organizations. Consequently, organisations are expected to be innovative in their business practices to become more sustainable. Yet, the popularity and adoption of such initiatives amongst employees remain low. Furthermore, the management practices for adhering to Green IT are largely dormant, lacking active incentives for employees to engage in Green IT initiatives. This study observes the phenomenon of Green IT through administrative innovation. In doing so this paper performs a comprehensive analysis of 137 papers published between 2007 and 2015. The paper reveals organizational factors for successful implementation of Green IT as administrative innovation that can be useful to both academia and practice
