Fourier-Galerkin method for 2D solitons of Boussinesq equation
Abstract We develop a Fourier-Galerkin spectral technique for computing the stationary solutions of 2D generalized wave equations. To this end a special complete orthonormal system of functions in L 2 (−∞, ∞) is used for which product formula is available. The exponential rate of convergence is shown. As a featuring example we consider the Proper Boussinesq Equation (PBE) in 2D and obtain the shapes of the stationary propagating localized waves. The technique is thoroughly validated and compared to other numerical results when possible
Finite volume methods for unidirectional dispersive wave models
We extend the framework of the finite volume method to dispersive
unidirectional water wave propagation in one space dimension. In particular we
consider a KdV-BBM type equation. Explicit and IMEX Runge-Kutta type methods
are used for time discretizations. The fully discrete schemes are validated by
direct comparisons to analytic solutions. Invariants conservation properties
are also studied. Main applications include important nonlinear phenomena such
as dispersive shock wave formation, solitary waves and their various
interactions.Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures, 51 references. Other authors papers can be

The well-posedness and solutions of Boussinesq-type equations
We develop well-posedness theory and analytical and numerical solution techniques for Boussinesq-type equations. Firstly, we consider the Cauchy problem for a generalized Boussinesq equation. We show that under suitable conditions, a global solution for this problem exists. In addition, we derive sufficient conditions for solution blow-up in finite time.Secondly, a generalized Jacobi/exponential expansion method for finding exact solutions of non-linear partial differential equations is discussed. We use the proposed expansion method to construct many new, previously undiscovered exact solutions for the Boussinesq and modified Korteweg-de Vries equations. We also apply it to the shallow water long wave approximate equations. New solutions are deduced for this system of partial differential equations. Finally, we develop and validate a numerical procedure for solving a class of initial boundary value problems for the improved Boussinesq equation. The finite element method with linear B-spline basis functions is used to discretize the equation in space and derive a second order system involving only ordinary derivatives. It is shown that the coefficient matrix for the second order term in this system is invertible. Consequently, for the first time, the initial boundary value problem can be reduced to an explicit initial value problem, which can be solved using many accurate numerical methods. Various examples are presented to validate this technique and demonstrate its capacity to simulate wave splitting, wave interaction and blow-up behavior
Finite volume and pseudo-spectral schemes for the fully nonlinear 1D Serre equations
After we derive the Serre system of equations of water wave theory from a
generalized variational principle, we present some of its structural
properties. We also propose a robust and accurate finite volume scheme to solve
these equations in one horizontal dimension. The numerical discretization is
validated by comparisons with analytical, experimental data or other numerical
solutions obtained by a highly accurate pseudo-spectral method.Comment: 28 pages, 16 figures, 75 references. Other author's papers can be

Spatio-temporal patterns in inclined layer convection
This paper reports on a theoretical analysis of the rich variety of spatio-temporal patterns observed recently in inclined layer convection at medium Prandtl number when varying the inclination angle γ and the Rayleigh number R. The present numerical investigation of the inclined layer convection system is based on the standard Oberbeck–Boussinesq equations. The patterns are shown to originate from a complicated competition of buoyancy driven and shear-flow driven pattern forming
mechanisms. The former are expressed as longitudinal convection rolls with their axes oriented parallel to the incline, the latter as perpendicular transverse rolls. Along with conventional methods to study roll patterns and their stability, we employ direct numerical simulations in large spatial domains, comparable with the experimental ones. As a result, we determine the phase diagram of the characteristic complex 3-D convection patterns above onset of convection in the γ–R plane, and find
that it compares very well with the experiments. In particular we demonstrate that interactions of specific Fourier modes, characterized by a resonant interaction of their wavevectors in the layer plane, are key to understanding the pattern morphologies
