    RacerD: compositional static race detection

    Automatic static detection of data races is one of the most basic problems in reasoning about concurrency. We present RacerD—a static program analysis for detecting data races in Java programs which is fast, can scale to large code, and has proven effective in an industrial software engineering scenario. To our knowledge, RacerD is the first inter-procedural, compositional data race detector which has been empirically shown to have non-trivial precision and impact. Due to its compositionality, it can analyze code changes quickly, and this allows it to perform continuous reasoning about a large, rapidly changing codebase as part of deployment within a continuous integration ecosystem. In contrast to previous static race detectors, its design favors reporting high-confidence bugs over ensuring their absence. RacerD has been in deployment for over a year at Facebook, where it has flagged over 2500 issues that have been fixed by developers before reaching production. It has been important in enabling the development of new code as well as fixing old code: it helped support the conversion of part of the main Facebook Android app from a single-threaded to a multi-threaded architecture.     Property templates and assertions supporting runtime failure detection

    In the context of our research program we addressed the question whether or not requirements documents contain information about system level properties that can be exploited to automatically create assertions for run-time checks of these properties. In this technical report we define the concept of property template and report details on the studies we carried out to address this question. The results are presented in the form of a catalog of property templates, and details from the individual studies showing which properties occur in which projects

    As part of Web 2.0 (Semantic Web), there is a new technology called FOAF (Friend of a Friend), describing relationships between people. We will investigate the applicability of FOAF for describing relationships between musicians of the past, thereby establishing a new biographical tool. Musicians have complex relationships,particularly those between teachers and students and those within ensembles of various sizes. Visual artists may have similar teacher-student relationships, but typically do not create their work together. Dancers may perform together, but they are usually taught in groups. Similarly, athletes may compete in groups, but they do not usually perform in public with their coaches. For this project we will focus specifically on relationships among Renaissance musicians and how to extract the biographical and relational data automatically from existing documents using natural language processing technology, creating a model applicable to other time periods and disciplines

    SapFix: Automated End-To-End Repair at Scale

    We report our experience with SapFix: the first deployment of automated end-to-end fault fixing, from test case design through to deployed repairs in production code. We have used SapFix at Facebook to repair 6 production systems, each consisting of tens of millions of lines of code, and which are collectively used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide
