On the dynamics of bubbles in boiling water
We investigate the dynamics of many interacting bubbles in boiling water by
using a laser scattering experiment. Specifically, we analyze the temporal
variations of a laser intensity signal which passed through a sample of boiling
water. Our empirical results indicate that the return interval distribution of
the laser signal does not follow an exponential distribution; contrariwise, a
heavy-tailed distribution has been found. Additionally, we compare the
experimental results with those obtained from a minimalist phenomenological
model, finding a good agreement.Comment: Accepted for publication in Chaos, Solitons & Fractal
Squarepants in a Tree: Sum of Subtree Clustering and Hyperbolic Pants Decomposition
We provide efficient constant factor approximation algorithms for the
problems of finding a hierarchical clustering of a point set in any metric
space, minimizing the sum of minimimum spanning tree lengths within each
cluster, and in the hyperbolic or Euclidean planes, minimizing the sum of
cluster perimeters. Our algorithms for the hyperbolic and Euclidean planes can
also be used to provide a pants decomposition, that is, a set of disjoint
simple closed curves partitioning the plane minus the input points into subsets
with exactly three boundary components, with approximately minimum total
length. In the Euclidean case, these curves are squares; in the hyperbolic
case, they combine our Euclidean square pants decomposition with our tree
clustering method for general metric spaces.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures. This version replaces the proof of what is now

Interactive Data Exploration with Smart Drill-Down
We present {\em smart drill-down}, an operator for interactively exploring a
relational table to discover and summarize "interesting" groups of tuples. Each
group of tuples is described by a {\em rule}. For instance, the rule tells us that there are a thousand tuples with value in the
first column and in the second column (and any value in the third column).
Smart drill-down presents an analyst with a list of rules that together
describe interesting aspects of the table. The analyst can tailor the
definition of interesting, and can interactively apply smart drill-down on an
existing rule to explore that part of the table. We demonstrate that the
underlying optimization problems are {\sc NP-Hard}, and describe an algorithm
for finding the approximately optimal list of rules to display when the user
uses a smart drill-down, and a dynamic sampling scheme for efficiently
interacting with large tables. Finally, we perform experiments on real datasets
on our experimental prototype to demonstrate the usefulness of smart drill-down
and study the performance of our algorithms
A global optimization approach to solve multi-aircraft routing problems
"This chapter appears in Computational Models, Software Engineering and Advanced Technologies in Air Transportation edited by Dr. Li Weigang and Dr. Alexandre G. de Barros. Chap.12 pp.237-259. Copyright 2009. Posted by permission of the publisher."This paper describes the formulation and solution of a multi-aircraft routing problem which is posed as a global optimization calculation. The paper extends previous work (involving a single aircraft using two dimensions) which established that the algorithm DIRECT is a suitable solution technique. The present work considers a number of ways of dealing with multiple routes using different problem decompositions. A further enhancement is the introduction of altitude to the problems so that full three-dimensional routes can be produced. Illustrative numerical results are presented involving up to three aircraft and including examples which feature routes over real-life terrain data
Implementation of a local principal curves algorithm for neutrino interaction reconstruction in a liquid argon volume
A local principal curve algorithm has been implemented in three dimensions
for automated track and shower reconstruction of neutrino interactions in a
liquid argon time projection chamber. We present details of the algorithm and
characterise its performance on simulated data sets.Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures; typing correction to Eq 5, the definition of
