    Filtering Techniques for Low-Noise Previews of Interactive Stochastic Ray Tracing

    Progressive stochastic ray tracing is increasingly used in interactive applications. Examples of such applications are interactive design reviews and digital content creation. This dissertation aims at advancing this development. For one thing, two filtering techniques are presented, which can generate fast and reliable previews of global illumination solutions. For another thing, a system architecture is presented, which supports exchangeable rendering back-ends in distributed rendering systems

    Hash-based hierarchical caching and layered filtering for interactive previews in global illumination rendering

Modern Monte-Carlo-based rendering systems still suffer from the computational complexity involved in the generation of noise-free images, making it challenging to synthesize interactive previews. We present a framework suited for rendering such previews of static scenes using a caching technique that builds upon a linkless octree. Our approach allows for memory-efficient storage and constant-time lookup to cache diffuse illumination at multiple hitpoints along the traced paths. Non-diffuse surfaces are dealt with in a hybrid way in order to reconstruct view-dependent illumination while maintaining interactive frame rates. By evaluating the visual fidelity against ground truth sequences and by benchmarking, we show that our approach compares well to low-noise path-traced results, but with a greatly reduced computational complexity, allowing for interactive frame rates.     Fast and interactive ray-based rendering

In this thesis, we present our work on Guided High-Quality Rendering, Foveated Ray Tracing for Head Mounted Displays and Hash-based Hierarchical Caching and Layered Filtering. Our system for Guided High-Quality Rendering allows for guiding the sampling rate of ray-based rendering methods by a user-specified Region of Interest (RoI). We propose two interaction methods for setting such an RoI when using a large display system and a desktop display, respectively. This makes it possible to compute images with a heterogeneous sample distribution across the image plane. Using such a non-uniform sample distribution, the rendering performance inside the RoI can be significantly improved in order to judge specific image features. However, a modified scheduling method is required to achieve sufficient performance. To solve this issue, we developed a scheduling method based on sparse matrix compression, which has shown significant improvements in our benchmarks. By filtering the sparsely sampled image appropriately, large brightness variations in areas outside the RoI are avoided and the overall image brightness is similar to the ground truth early in the rendering process. When using ray-based methods in a VR environment on head-mounted display de vices, it is crucial to provide sufficient frame rates in order to reduce motion sickness. This is a challenging task when moving through highly complex environments and the full image has to be rendered for each frame. With our foveated rendering sys tem, we provide a perception-based method for adjusting the sample density to the user’s gaze, measured with an eye tracker integrated into the HMD. In order to avoid disturbances through visual artifacts from low sampling rates, we introduce a reprojection-based rendering pipeline that allows for fast rendering and temporal accumulation of the sparsely placed samples. In our user study, we analyse the im pact our system has on visual quality. We then take a closer look at the recorded eye tracking data in order to determine tracking accuracy and connections between different fixation modes and perceived quality, leading to surprising insights. For previewing global illumination of a scene interactively by allowing for free scene exploration, we present a hash-based caching system. Building upon the concept of linkless octrees, which allow for constant-time queries of spatial data, our frame work is suited for rendering such previews of static scenes. Non-diffuse surfaces are supported by our hybrid reconstruction approach that allows for the visualization of view-dependent effects. In addition to our caching and reconstruction technique, we introduce a novel layered filtering framework, acting as a hybrid method between path space and image space filtering, that allows for the high-quality denoising of non-diffuse materials. Also, being designed as a framework instead of a concrete filtering method, it is possible to adapt most available denoising methods to our layered approach instead of relying only on the filtering of primary hitpoints

    Utilising path-vertex data to improve Monte Carlo global illumination.

    Efficient techniques for photo-realistic rendering are in high demand across a wide array of industries. Notable applications include visual effects for film, entertainment and virtual reality. Less direct applications such as visualisation for architecture, lighting design and product development also rely on the synthesis of realistic and physically based illumination. Such applications assert ever increasing demands on light transport algorithms, requiring the computation of photo-realistic effects while handling complex geometry, light scattering models and illumination. Techniques based on Monte Carlo integration handle such scenarios elegantly and robustly, but despite seeing decades of focused research and wide commercial support, these methods and their derivatives still exhibit undesirable side effects that are yet to be resolved. In this thesis, Monte Carlo path tracing techniques are improved upon by utilizing path vertex data and intermediate radiance contributions readily available during rendering. This permits the development of novel progressive algorithms that render low noise global illumination while striving to maintain the desirable accuracy and convergence properties of unbiased methods. The thesis starts by presenting a discussion into optical phenomenon, physically based rendering and achieving photo realistic image synthesis. This is followed by in-depth discussion of the published theoretical and practical research in this field, with a focus on stochastic methods and modem rendering methodologies. This provides insight into the issues surrounding Monte Carlo integration both in the general and rendering specific contexts, along with an appreciation for the complexities of solving global light transport. Alternative methods that aim to address these issues are discussed, providing an insight into modem rendering paradigms and their characteristics. Thus, an understanding of the key aspects is obtained, that is necessary to build up and discuss the novel research and contributions to the field developed throughout this thesis. First, a path space filtering strategy is proposed that allows the path-based space of light transport to be classified into distinct subsets. This permits the novel combination of robust path tracing and recent progressive photon mapping algorithms to handle each subset based on the characteristics of the light transport in that space. This produces a hybrid progressive rendering technique that utilises the strengths of existing state of the art Monte Carlo and photon mapping methods to provide efficient and consistent rendering of complex scenes with vanishing bias. The second original contribution is a probabilistic image-based filtering and sample clustering framework that provides high quality previews of global illumination whilst remaining aware of high frequency detail and features in geometry, materials and the incident illumination. As will be seen, the challenges of edge-aware noise reduction are numerous and long standing, particularly when identifying high frequency features in noisy illumination signals. Discontinuities such as hard shadows and glossy reflections are commonly overlooked by progressive filtering techniques, however by dividing path space into multiple layers, once again based on utilising path vertex data, the overlapping illumination of varying intensities, colours and frequencies is more effectively handled. Thus noise is removed from each layer independent of features present in the remaining path space, effectively preserving such features

    Foveated Path Tracing with Fast Reconstruction and Efficient Sample Distribution

    Polunseuranta on tietokonegrafiikan piirtotekniikka, jota on käytetty pääasiassa ei-reaaliaikaisen realistisen piirron tekemiseen. Polunseuranta tukee luonnostaan monia muilla tekniikoilla vaikeasti saavutettavia todellisen valon ilmiöitä kuten heijastuksia ja taittumista. Reaaliaikainen polunseuranta on hankalaa polunseurannan suuren laskentavaatimuksen takia. Siksi nykyiset reaaliaikaiset polunseurantasysteemi tuottavat erittäin kohinaisia kuvia, jotka tyypillisesti suodatetaan jälkikäsittelykohinanpoisto-suodattimilla. Erittäin immersiivisiä käyttäjäkokemuksia voitaisiin luoda polunseurannalla, joka täyttäisi laajennetun todellisuuden vaatimukset suuresta resoluutiosta riittävän matalassa vasteajassa. Yksi mahdollinen ratkaisu näiden vaatimusten täyttämiseen voisi olla katsekeskeinen polunseuranta, jossa piirron resoluutiota vähennetään katseen reunoilla. Tämän johdosta piirron laatu on katseen reunoilla sekä harvaa että kohinaista, mikä asettaa suuren roolin lopullisen kuvan koostavalle suodattimelle. Tässä työssä esitellään ensimmäinen reaaliajassa toimiva regressionsuodatin. Suodatin on suunniteltu kohinaisille kuville, joissa on yksi polunseurantanäyte pikseliä kohden. Nopea suoritus saavutetaan tiileissä käsittelemällä ja nopealla sovituksen toteutuksella. Lisäksi työssä esitellään Visual-Polar koordinaattiavaruus, joka jakaa polunseurantanäytteet siten, että niiden jakauma seuraa silmän herkkyysmallia. Visual-Polar-avaruuden etu muihin tekniikoiden nähden on että se vähentää työmäärää sekä polunseurannassa että suotimessa. Nämä tekniikat esittelevät toimivan prototyypin katsekeskeisestä polunseurannasta, ja saattavat toimia tienraivaajina laajamittaiselle realistisen reaaliaikaisen polunseurannan käyttöönotolle.Photo-realistic offline rendering is currently done with path tracing, because it naturally produces many real-life light effects such as reflections, refractions and caustics. These effects are hard to achieve with other rendering techniques. However, path tracing in real time is complicated due to its high computational demand. Therefore, current real-time path tracing systems can only generate very noisy estimate of the final frame, which is then denoised with a post-processing reconstruction filter. A path tracing-based rendering system capable of filling the high resolution in the low latency requirements of mixed reality devices would generate a very immersive user experience. One possible solution for fulfilling these requirements could be foveated path tracing, wherein the rendering resolution is reduced in the periphery of the human visual system. The key challenge is that the foveated path tracing in the periphery is both sparse and noisy, placing high demands on the reconstruction filter. This thesis proposes the first regression-based reconstruction filter for path tracing that runs in real time. The filter is designed for highly noisy one sample per pixel inputs. The fast execution is accomplished with blockwise processing and fast implementation of the regression. In addition, a novel Visual-Polar coordinate space which distributes the samples according to the contrast sensitivity model of the human visual system is proposed. The specialty of Visual-Polar space is that it reduces both path tracing and reconstruction work because both of them can be done with smaller resolution. These techniques enable a working prototype of a foveated path tracing system and may work as a stepping stone towards wider commercial adoption of photo-realistic real-time path tracing

    Artistic Path Space Editing of Physically Based Light Transport

    Die Erzeugung realistischer Bilder ist ein wichtiges Ziel der Computergrafik, mit Anwendungen u.a. in der Spielfilmindustrie, Architektur und Medizin. Die physikalisch basierte Bildsynthese, welche in letzter Zeit anwendungsübergreifend weiten Anklang findet, bedient sich der numerischen Simulation des Lichttransports entlang durch die geometrische Optik vorgegebener Ausbreitungspfade; ein Modell, welches für übliche Szenen ausreicht, Photorealismus zu erzielen. Insgesamt gesehen ist heute das computergestützte Verfassen von Bildern und Animationen mit wohlgestalteter und theoretisch fundierter Schattierung stark vereinfacht. Allerdings ist bei der praktischen Umsetzung auch die Rücksichtnahme auf Details wie die Struktur des Ausgabegeräts wichtig und z.B. das Teilproblem der effizienten physikalisch basierten Bildsynthese in partizipierenden Medien ist noch weit davon entfernt, als gelöst zu gelten. Weiterhin ist die Bildsynthese als Teil eines weiteren Kontextes zu sehen: der effektiven Kommunikation von Ideen und Informationen. Seien es nun Form und Funktion eines Gebäudes, die medizinische Visualisierung einer Computertomografie oder aber die Stimmung einer Filmsequenz -- Botschaften in Form digitaler Bilder sind heutzutage omnipräsent. Leider hat die Verbreitung der -- auf Simulation ausgelegten -- Methodik der physikalisch basierten Bildsynthese generell zu einem Verlust intuitiver, feingestalteter und lokaler künstlerischer Kontrolle des finalen Bildinhalts geführt, welche in vorherigen, weniger strikten Paradigmen vorhanden war. Die Beiträge dieser Dissertation decken unterschiedliche Aspekte der Bildsynthese ab. Dies sind zunächst einmal die grundlegende Subpixel-Bildsynthese sowie effiziente Bildsyntheseverfahren für partizipierende Medien. Im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit stehen jedoch Ansätze zum effektiven visuellen Verständnis der Lichtausbreitung, die eine lokale künstlerische Einflussnahme ermöglichen und gleichzeitig auf globaler Ebene konsistente und glaubwürdige Ergebnisse erzielen. Hierbei ist die Kernidee, Visualisierung und Bearbeitung des Lichts direkt im alle möglichen Lichtpfade einschließenden "Pfadraum" durchzuführen. Dies steht im Gegensatz zu Verfahren nach Stand der Forschung, die entweder im Bildraum arbeiten oder auf bestimmte, isolierte Beleuchtungseffekte wie perfekte Spiegelungen, Schatten oder Kaustiken zugeschnitten sind. Die Erprobung der vorgestellten Verfahren hat gezeigt, dass mit ihnen real existierende Probleme der Bilderzeugung für Filmproduktionen gelöst werden können

    Millions of individuals explore virtual worlds every day, for entertainment, training, or to plan business trips and vacations. Video games such as Eve Online, World of Warcraft, and many others popularized their existence. Sand boxes such as Minecraft and Second Life illustrated how they can serve as a media, letting people create, share and even sell their virtual productions. Navigation and exploration software such as Google Earth and Virtual Earth let us explore a virtual version of the real world, and let us enrich it with information shared between the millions of users using these services every day.Virtual environments are massive, dynamic 3D scenes, that are explored and manipulated interactively bythousands of users simultaneously. Many challenges have to be solved to achieve these goals. Among those lies the key question of content management. How can we create enough detailed graphical content so as to represent an immersive, convincing and coherent world? Even if we can produce this data, how can we then store the terra–bytes it represents, and transfer it for display to each individual users? Rich virtual environments require a massive amount of varied graphical content, so as to represent an immersive, convincing and coherent world. Creating this content is extremely time consuming for computer artists and requires a specific set of technical skills. Capturing the data from the real world can simplify this task but then requires a large quantity of storage, expensive hardware and long capture campaigns. While this is acceptable for important landmarks (e.g. the statue of Liberty in New York, the Eiffel tower in Paris) this is wasteful on generic or anonymous landscapes. In addition, in many cases capture is not an option, either because an imaginary scenery is required or because the scene to be represented no longer exists. Therefore, researchers have proposed methods to generate new content programmatically, using captured data as an example. Typically, building blocks are extracted from the example content and re–assembled to form new assets. Such approaches have been at the center of my research for the past ten years. However, algorithms for generating data programmatically only partially address the content management challenge: the algorithm generates content as a (slow) pre–process and its output has to be stored for later use. On the contrary, I have focused on proposing models and algorithms which can produce graphical content while minimizing storage. The content is either generated when it is needed for the current viewpoint, or is produced under a very compact form that can be later used for rendering. Thanks to such approaches developers gain time during content creation, but this also simplifies the distribution of the content by reducing the required data bandwidth.In addition to the core problem of content synthesis, my approaches required the development of new data-structures able to store sparse data generated during display, while enabling an efficient access. These data-structures are specialized for the massive parallelism of graphics processors. I contributed early in this domain and kept a constant focus on this area. The originality of my approach has thus been to consider simultaneously the problems of generating, storing and displaying the graphical content. As we shall see, each of these area involve different theoretical and technical backgrounds, that nicely complement each other in providing elegant solutions to content generation, management and display

    Fortgeschrittene Entrauschungs-Verfahren und speicherlose Beschleunigungstechniken für realistische Bildsynthese

    Stochastic ray tracing methods have become the industry's standard for today's realistic image synthesis thanks to their ability to achieve a supreme degree of realism by physically simulating various natural phenomena of light and cameras (e.g. global illumination, depth-of-field, or motion blur). Unfortunately, high computational cost for more complex scenes and image noise from insufficient simulations are major issues of these methods and, hence, acceleration and denoising are key components in stochastic ray tracing systems. In this thesis, we introduce two new filtering methods for advanced lighting and camera effects, as well as a novel approach for memoryless acceleration. In particular, we present an interactive filter for global illumination in the presence of depth-of-field, and a general and robust adaptive reconstruction framework for high-quality images with a wide range of rendering effects. To address complex scene geometry, we propose a novel concept which models the acceleration structure completely implicit, i.e. without any additional memory cost at all, while still allowing for interactive performance. Our contributions advance the state-of-the-art of denoising techniques for realistic image synthesis as well as the field of memoryless acceleration for ray tracing systems.Stochastische Ray-Tracing Methoden sind heutzutage der Industriestandard für realistische Bildsynthese, da sie einen hohen Grad an Realismus erzeugen können, indem sie verschiedene natürliche Phänomene (z.B. globale Beleuchtung, Tiefenunschärfe oder Bewegungsunschärfe) physikalisch korrekt simulieren. Offene Probleme dieser Verfahren sind hohe Rechenzeit für komplexere Szenen sowie Bildrauschen durch unzulängliche Simulationen. Demzufolge sind Beschleunigungstechniken und Entrauschungsverfahren essentielle Komponenten in stochastischen Ray-Tracing-Systemen. In dieser Arbeit stellen wir zwei neue Filter-Methoden für erweiterte Beleuchungs- und Kamera-Effekte sowie ein neuartiges Verfahren für eine speicherlose Beschleunigungsstruktur vor. Im Detail präsentieren wir einen interaktiven Filter für globale Beleuchtung in Kombination mit Tiefenunschärfe und einen generischen, robusten Ansatz für die adaptive Rekonstruktion von hoch-qualitativen Bildern mit einer großen Auswahl an Rendering-Effekten. Für das Problem hoher geometrischer Szenen-Komplexität demonstrieren wir ein neuartiges Konzept für die implizierte Modellierung der Beschleunigungsstruktur, welches keinen zusätzlichen Speicher verbraucht, aber weiterhin interaktive Laufzeiten ermöglicht. Unsere Beiträge verbessern sowohl den aktuellen Stand von Entrauschungs-Verfahren in der realistischen Bildsynthese als auch das Feld der speicherlosen Beschleunigungsstrukturen für Ray-Tracing-Systeme
