    Metastability-Containing Circuits

    In digital circuits, metastability can cause deteriorated signals that neither are logical 0 or logical 1, breaking the abstraction of Boolean logic. Unfortunately, any way of reading a signal from an unsynchronized clock domain or performing an analog-to-digital conversion incurs the risk of a metastable upset; no digital circuit can deterministically avoid, resolve, or detect metastability (Marino, 1981). Synchronizers, the only traditional countermeasure, exponentially decrease the odds of maintained metastability over time. Trading synchronization delay for an increased probability to resolve metastability to logical 0 or 1, they do not guarantee success. We propose a fundamentally different approach: It is possible to contain metastability by fine-grained logical masking so that it cannot infect the entire circuit. This technique guarantees a limited degree of metastability in---and uncertainty about---the output. At the heart of our approach lies a time- and value-discrete model for metastability in synchronous clocked digital circuits. Metastability is propagated in a worst-case fashion, allowing to derive deterministic guarantees, without and unlike synchronizers. The proposed model permits positive results and passes the test of reproducing Marino's impossibility results. We fully classify which functions can be computed by circuits with standard registers. Regarding masking registers, we show that they become computationally strictly more powerful with each clock cycle, resulting in a non-trivial hierarchy of computable functions

    Validation of a fault-tolerant clock synchronization system

    A validation method for the synchronization subsystem of a fault tolerant computer system is investigated. The method combines formal design verification with experimental testing. The design proof reduces the correctness of the clock synchronization system to the correctness of a set of axioms which are experimentally validated. Since the reliability requirements are often extreme, requiring the estimation of extremely large quantiles, an asymptotic approach to estimation in the tail of a distribution is employed

    Fault-tolerant Algorithms for Tick-Generation in Asynchronous Logic: Robust Pulse Generation

    Today's hardware technology presents a new challenge in designing robust systems. Deep submicron VLSI technology introduced transient and permanent faults that were never considered in low-level system designs in the past. Still, robustness of that part of the system is crucial and needs to be guaranteed for any successful product. Distributed systems, on the other hand, have been dealing with similar issues for decades. However, neither the basic abstractions nor the complexity of contemporary fault-tolerant distributed algorithms match the peculiarities of hardware implementations. This paper is intended to be part of an attempt striving to overcome this gap between theory and practice for the clock synchronization problem. Solving this task sufficiently well will allow to build a very robust high-precision clocking system for hardware designs like systems-on-chips in critical applications. As our first building block, we describe and prove correct a novel Byzantine fault-tolerant self-stabilizing pulse synchronization protocol, which can be implemented using standard asynchronous digital logic. Despite the strict limitations introduced by hardware designs, it offers optimal resilience and smaller complexity than all existing protocols.Comment: 52 pages, 7 figures, extended abstract published at SSS 201

    Wildcard dimensions, coding theory and fault-tolerant meshes and hypercubes

    Hypercubes, meshes and tori are well known interconnection networks for parallel computers. The sets of edges in those graphs can be partitioned to dimensions. It is well known that the hypercube can be extended by adding a wildcard dimension resulting in a folded hypercube that has better fault-tolerant and communication capabilities. First we prove that the folded hypercube is optimal in the sense that only a single wildcard dimension can be added to the hypercube. We then investigate the idea of adding wildcard dimensions to d-dimensional meshes and tori. Using techniques from error correcting codes we construct d-dimensional meshes and tori with wildcard dimensions. Finally, we show how these constructions can be used to tolerate edge and node faults in mesh and torus networks

    Rapid Recovery for Systems with Scarce Faults

    Our goal is to achieve a high degree of fault tolerance through the control of a safety critical systems. This reduces to solving a game between a malicious environment that injects failures and a controller who tries to establish a correct behavior. We suggest a new control objective for such systems that offers a better balance between complexity and precision: we seek systems that are k-resilient. In order to be k-resilient, a system needs to be able to rapidly recover from a small number, up to k, of local faults infinitely many times, provided that blocks of up to k faults are separated by short recovery periods in which no fault occurs. k-resilience is a simple but powerful abstraction from the precise distribution of local faults, but much more refined than the traditional objective to maximize the number of local faults. We argue why we believe this to be the right level of abstraction for safety critical systems when local faults are few and far between. We show that the computational complexity of constructing optimal control with respect to resilience is low and demonstrate the feasibility through an implementation and experimental results.Comment: In Proceedings GandALF 2012, arXiv:1210.202

    Synchronization and fault-masking in redundant real-time systems

    A real time computer may fail because of massive component failures or not responding quickly enough to satisfy real time requirements. An increase in redundancy - a conventional means of improving reliability - can improve the former but can - in some cases - degrade the latter considerably due to the overhead associated with redundancy management, namely the time delay resulting from synchronization and voting/interactive consistency techniques. The implications of synchronization and voting/interactive consistency algorithms in N-modular clusters on reliability are considered. All these studies were carried out in the context of real time applications. As a demonstrative example, we have analyzed results from experiments conducted at the NASA Airlab on the Software Implemented Fault Tolerance (SIFT) computer. This analysis has indeed indicated that in most real time applications, it is better to employ hardware synchronization instead of software synchronization and not allow reconfiguration

    A Fault-Tolerant Clock Synchronization and Geometry Determination Protocol

    A fault-tolerant distributed protocol (algorithm) is presented that achieves optimum timing precision (clock synchronization) among the nodes and, simultaneously, determines the network's geometry (shape) - locations and distances of the nodes relative to each other - in a wireless distributed system. This protocol is based on the assumption of initial coarse synchrony of nodes' local clocks. The proposed solution assumes no prior knowledge of the nodes' locations, the distances between the nodes, or network's geometry, but assumes an ordered geometry where nodes have unique identifiers. This protocol accommodates large variations in the communication latencies among the nodes; thus, it applies equally to both wireless and wired networks
