Iterative Unbiased FIR State Estimation: A Review of Algorithms
In this paper, we develop in part and review various iterative unbiased finite impulse response (UFIR) algorithms (both direct and two-stage) for the filtering, smoothing, and prediction of time-varying and time-invariant discrete state-space models in white Gaussian noise environments. The distinctive property of UFIR algorithms is that noise statistics are completely ignored. Instead, an optimal window size is required for optimal performance. We show that the optimal window size can be determined via measurements with no reference. UFIR algorithms are computationally more demanding than Kalman filters, but this extra computational effort can be alleviated with parallel computing, and the extra memory that is required is not a problem for modern computers. Under real-world operating conditions with uncertainties, non-Gaussian noise, and unknown noise statistics, the UFIR estimator generally demonstrates better robustness than the Kalman filter, even with suboptimal window size. In applications requiring large window size, the UFIR estimator is also superior to the best previously known optimal FIR estimators

Review of Unbiased FIR Filters, Smoothers, and Predictors for Polynomial Signals
Extracting an estimate of a slowly varying signal corrupted by noise is a common task. Examples can be found in industrial, scientific and biomedical instrumentation. Depending on the nature of the application the signal estimate is allowed to be a delayed estimate of the original signal or, in the other extreme, no delay is tolerated. These cases are commonly referred to as filtering, prediction, and smoothing depending on the amount of advance or lag between the input data set and the output data set. In this review paper we provide a comprehensive set of design and analysis tools for designing unbiased FIR filters, predictors, and smoothers for slowly varying signals, i.e. signals that can be modeled by low order polynomials. Explicit expressions of parameters needed in practical implementations are given. Real life examples are provided including cases where the method is extended to signals that are piecewise slowly varying. A critical view on recursive implementations of the algorithms is provided

The Kalman filter is typically presented in a predictor/corrector format, but the Kalman smoother has never been derived in that format. We derive the Kalman smoother in a predictor/corrector format, thus providing a unified form for the Kalman filter and smoother. We also discuss unbiased finite impulse response (UFIR) filters and smoothers, which can provide a suboptimal but robust alternative to Kalman estimators. We derive two unified forms for UFIR filters and smoothers, and we derive lower and upper bounds for their estimation error covariances

Improved Receding Horizon Fourier Analysis for Quasi-periodic Signals
In this paper, an efficient short-time Fourier analysis method for the quasi-periodic signals is proposed via an optimal fixed-lag finite impulse response (FIR) smoother approach using a receding horizon scheme. In order to deal with time-varying Fourier coefficients (FCs) of quasi-periodic signals, a state space model including FCs as state variables is augmented with the variants of FCs. Through an optimal fixed-lag FIR smoother, FCs and their increments are estimated simultaneously and combined to produce final estimates. A lag size of the optimal fixed-lag FIR smoother is chosen to minimize the estimation error. Since the proposed estimation scheme carries out the correction process with the estimated variants of FCs, it is highly probable that the smaller estimation error is achieved compared with existing approaches not making use of such a process. It is shown through numerical simulation that the proposed scheme has better tracking ability for estimating time-varying FCs compared with existing ones.111Ysciescopuskc
A kepstrum approach to filtering, smoothing and prediction
The kepstrum (or complex cepstrum) method is revisited and applied to the problem of spectral factorization
where the spectrum is directly estimated from observations. The solution to this problem in turn leads to a new
approach to optimal filtering, smoothing and prediction using the Wiener theory. Unlike previous approaches to
adaptive and self-tuning filtering, the technique, when implemented, does not require a priori information on the
type or order of the signal generating model. And unlike other approaches - with the exception of spectral
subtraction - no state-space or polynomial model is necessary. In this first paper results are restricted to
stationary signal and additive white noise
Digital Filters for Instantaneous Frequency Estimation
This technical note is on digital filters for the high-fidelity estimation of
a sinusoidal signal's frequency in the presence of additive noise. The complex
noise is assumed to be white (i.e. uncorrelated) however it need not be
Gaussian. The complex signal is assumed to be of (approximately) constant
magnitude and (approximately) polynomial phase such as the chirps emitted by
bats, whale songs, pulse-compression radars, and frequency-modulated (FM)
radios, over sufficiently short timescales. Such digital signals may be found
at the end of a sequence of analogue heterodyning (i.e. mixing and low-pass
filtering), down to a bandwidth that is matched to an analogue-to-digital
converter (ADC), followed by digital heterodyning and sample rate reduction
(optional) to match the clock frequency of the processor. The spacing of the
discrete frequency bins (in cycles per sample) produced by the Fast Fourier
Transform (FFT) is equal to the reciprocal of the window length (in samples).
However, a long FFT (for fine frequency resolution) has a high complexity and a
long latency, which may be prohibitive in embedded closed-loop systems, and
unnecessary when the channel only contains a single sinusoid. In such cases,
and for signals of constant frequency, the conventional approach involves the
(weighted) average of instantaneous phase differences. General, naive, optimal,
and pragmatic (recursive), filtering solutions are discussed and analysed here
