    Towards a Common Software/Hardware Methodology for Future Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

    The European research project DESERVE (DEvelopment platform for Safe and Efficient dRiVE, 2012-2015) had the aim of designing and developing a platform tool to cope with the continuously increasing complexity and the simultaneous need to reduce cost for future embedded Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). For this purpose, the DESERVE platform profits from cross-domain software reuse, standardization of automotive software component interfaces, and easy but safety-compliant integration of heterogeneous modules. This enables the development of a new generation of ADAS applications, which challengingly combine different functions, sensors, actuators, hardware platforms, and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). This book presents the different results of the DESERVE project concerning the ADAS development platform, test case functions, and validation and evaluation of different approaches. The reader is invited to substantiate the content of this book with the deliverables published during the DESERVE project.     Improving Transformer-based Image Matching by Cascaded Capturing Spatially Informative Keypoints

    Learning robust local image feature matching is a fundamental low-level vision task, which has been widely explored in the past few years. Recently, detector-free local feature matchers based on transformers have shown promising results, which largely outperform pure Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based ones. But correlations produced by transformer-based methods are spatially limited to the center of source views' coarse patches, because of the costly attention learning. In this work, we rethink this issue and find that such matching formulation degrades pose estimation, especially for low-resolution images. So we propose a transformer-based cascade matching model -- Cascade feature Matching TRansformer (CasMTR), to efficiently learn dense feature correlations, which allows us to choose more reliable matching pairs for the relative pose estimation. Instead of re-training a new detector, we use a simple yet effective Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS) post-process to filter keypoints through the confidence map, and largely improve the matching precision. CasMTR achieves state-of-the-art performance in indoor and outdoor pose estimation as well as visual localization.     Visual Guidance for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles with Deep Learning

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been widely applied in the military and civilian domains. In recent years, the operation mode of UAVs is evolving from teleoperation to autonomous flight. In order to fulfill the goal of autonomous flight, a reliable guidance system is essential. Since the combination of Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Navigation System (INS) systems cannot sustain autonomous flight in some situations where GPS can be degraded or unavailable, using computer vision as a primary method for UAV guidance has been widely explored. Moreover, GPS does not provide any information to the robot on the presence of obstacles. Stereo cameras have complex architecture and need a minimum baseline to generate disparity map. By contrast, monocular cameras are simple and require less hardware resources. Benefiting from state-of-the-art Deep Learning (DL) techniques, especially Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), a monocular camera is sufficient to extrapolate mid-level visual representations such as depth maps and optical flow (OF) maps from the environment. Therefore, the objective of this thesis is to develop a real-time visual guidance method for UAVs in cluttered environments using a monocular camera and DL. The three major tasks performed in this thesis are investigating the development of DL techniques and monocular depth estimation (MDE), developing real-time CNNs for MDE, and developing visual guidance methods on the basis of the developed MDE system. A comprehensive survey is conducted, which covers Structure from Motion (SfM)-based methods, traditional handcrafted feature-based methods, and state-of-the-art DL-based methods. More importantly, it also investigates the application of MDE in robotics. Based on the survey, two CNNs for MDE are developed. In addition to promising accuracy performance, these two CNNs run at high frame rates (126 fps and 90 fps respectively), on a single modest power Graphical Processing Unit (GPU). As regards the third task, the visual guidance for UAVs is first developed on top of the designed MDE networks. To improve the robustness of UAV guidance, OF maps are integrated into the developed visual guidance method. A cross-attention module is applied to fuse the features learned from the depth maps and OF maps. The fused features are then passed through a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) network to generate the policy for guiding the flight of UAV. Additionally, a simulation framework is developed which integrates AirSim, Unreal Engine and PyTorch. The effectiveness of the developed visual guidance method is validated through extensive experiments in the simulation framework

    Sharing GPUs for Real-Time Autonomous-Driving Systems

    Autonomous vehicles at mass-market scales are on the horizon. Cameras are the least expensive among common sensor types and can preserve features such as color and texture that other sensors cannot. Therefore, realizing full autonomy in vehicles at a reasonable cost is expected to entail computer-vision techniques. These computer-vision applications require massive parallelism provided by the underlying shared accelerators, such as graphics processing units, or GPUs, to function “in real time.” However, when computer-vision researchers and GPU vendors refer to “real time,” they usually mean “real fast”; in contrast, certifiable automotive systems must be “real time” in the sense of being predictable. This dissertation addresses the challenging problem of how GPUs can be shared predictably and efficiently for real-time autonomous-driving systems. We tackle this challenge in four steps. First, we investigate NVIDIA GPUs with respect to scheduling, synchronization, and execution. We conduct an extensive set of experiments to infer NVIDIA GPU scheduling rules, which are unfortunately undisclosed by NVIDIA and are beyond access owing to their closed-source software stack. We also expose a list of pitfalls pertaining to CPU-GPU synchronization that can result in unbounded response times of GPU-using applications. Lastly, we examine a fundamental trade-off for designing real-time tasks under different execution options. Overall, our investigation provides an essential understanding of NVIDIA GPUs, allowing us to further model and analyze GPU tasks. Second, we develop a new model and conduct schedulability analysis for GPU tasks. We extend the well-studied sporadic task model with additional parameters that characterize the parallel execution of GPU tasks. We show that NVIDIA scheduling rules are subject to fundamental capacity loss, which implies a necessary total utilization bound. We derive response-time bounds for GPU task systems that satisfy our schedulability conditions. Third, we address an industrial challenge of supplying the throughput performance of computer-vision frameworks to support adequate coverage and redundancy offered by an array of cameras. We re-think the design of convolution neural network (CNN) software to better utilize hardware resources and achieve increased throughput (number of simultaneous camera streams) without any appreciable increase in per-frame latency (camera to CNN output) or reduction of per-stream accuracy. Fourth, we apply our analysis to a finer-grained graph scheduling of a computer-vision standard, OpenVX, which explicitly targets embedded and real-time systems.     Technologies for Biomechanically-Informed Image Guidance of Laparoscopic Liver Surgery

    Laparoscopic surgery for liver resection has a number medical advantages over open surgery, but also comes with inherent technical challenges. The surgeon only has a very limited field of view through the imaging modalities routinely employed intra-operatively, laparoscopic video and ultrasound, and the pneumoperitoneum required to create the operating space and gaining access to the organ can significantly deform and displace the liver from its pre-operative configuration. This can make relating what is visible intra-operatively to the pre-operative plan and inferring the location of sub-surface anatomy a very challenging task. Image guidance systems can help overcome these challenges by updating the pre-operative plan to the situation in theatre and visualising it in relation to the position of surgical instruments. In this thesis, I present a series of contributions to a biomechanically-informed image-guidance system made during my PhD. The most recent one is work on a pipeline for the estimation of the post-insufflation configuration of the liver by means of an algorithm that uses a database of segmented training images of patient abdomens where the post-insufflation configuration of the liver is known. The pipeline comprises an algorithm for inter and intra-subject registration of liver meshes by means of non-rigid spectral point-correspondence finding. My other contributions are more fundamental and less application specific, and are all contained and made available to the public in the NiftySim open-source finite element modelling package. Two of my contributions to NiftySim are of particular interest with regards to image guidance of laparoscopic liver surgery: 1) a novel general purpose contact modelling algorithm that can be used to simulate contact interactions between, e.g., the liver and surrounding anatomy; 2) membrane and shell elements that can be used to, e.g., simulate the Glisson capsule that has been shown to significantly influence the organ’s measured stiffness
