FM radio: family interplay with sonic mementos

    Get PDF
Digital mementos are increasingly problematic, as people acquire large amounts of digital belongings that are hard to access and often forgotten. Based on fieldwork with 10 families, we designed a new type of embodied digital memento, the FM Radio. It allows families to access and play sonic mementos of their previous holidays. We describe our underlying design motivation where recordings are presented as a series of channels on an old fashioned radio. User feedback suggests that the device met our design goals: being playful and intriguing, easy to use and social. It facilitated family interaction, and allowed ready access to mementos, thus sharing many of the properties of physical mementos that we intended to trigger

    Early FM Radio

The commonly accepted history of FM radio is one of the twentieth century’s iconic sagas of invention, heroism, and tragedy. Edwin Howard Armstrong created a system of wideband frequency-modulation radio in 1933. The Radio Corporation of America (RCA), convinced that Armstrong’s system threatened its AM empire, failed to develop the new technology and refused to pay Armstrong royalties. Armstrong sued the company at great personal cost. He died despondent, exhausted, and broke. But this account, according to Gary L. Frost, ignores the contributions of scores of other individuals who were involved in the decades-long struggle to realize the potential of FM radio. The first scholar to fully examine recently uncovered evidence from the Armstrong v. RCA lawsuit, Frost offers a thorough revision of the FM story. Frost’s balanced, contextualized approach provides a much-needed corrective to previous accounts. Navigating deftly through the details of a complicated story, he examines the motivations and interactions of the three communities most intimately involved in the development of the technology—Progressive-era amateur radio operators, RCA and Westinghouse engineers, and early FM broadcasters. In the process, Frost demonstrates the tension between competition and collaboration that goes hand in hand with the emergence and refinement of new technologies. Frost's study reconsiders both the social construction of FM radio and the process of technological evolution. Historians of technology, communication, and media will welcome this important reexamination of the canonic story of early FM radio

The PC FM Radio program allows a PC user to listen to FM radio stations while using a PC. The application includes controls that will let the PC user select different FM stations, preset a favorite FM station, select a preset station, and record the current station. The FM hardware is an ISA expansion card that provides the audio signal to the PC through the auxiliary input jack in the sound card. The supporting software runs on Windows 95 machines. A help file is included for simple instructions. The software runs in the background and doesn\u27t use much of the computer resources. The software graphical user interface (GUI) is user-friendly and looks like an FM radio interface. The project met all of the original design specifications and followed the principles and techniques of software engineering

English-Tigrinya Intrasentential Code-switching on Tigrinya FM Radio Programs (TFRPs)

This  study  deals  with the linguistic analysis of Tigrinya-English(Tiglish) code-switching phenomenon: the case FM  Radio Programs  broadcasting  in  and  around  Mekelle. The  rationales,  which  triggered  the  researcher  to  conduct  such  a  research,  are  the  fact that  there  are  very  few  studies  in  Ethiopia,  no  research  in  Tigray  , and  the  researcher  was  experienced  with  switched Tigrinya  in  the  Tigrinya  FM  radio  programs  (TFRPs). The study aims mainly at exploring features of intrasentential code-switching on Tigrinya FM radio services (TFRSs). To  address  the  problems  and  achieve  the  objectives, qualitative methods were employed for gathering bits of information from the selected site FM radio  listeners  in  focus. Audio recording was used as basic tools to collect genuine information, and the bits of information were collected from bilingual TFRPs clients and the newscasters. There are bulks of code-switching occurrences on TFRPs more frequently from English and Amharic constituents; Tigrean code-switchers were engaging in code-switching incidences motivated by the sociocultural attractions. Key words: code-switching, intrasentential and Tigrinya FM Radio Program DOI: 10.7176/JLLL/67-02 Publication date: April 30th 202

Code switching is a bilingual communication strategy which consists of the alternate use of two or more languages in the same utterance. The main objective of this study is an analysis on code switching used in panorama FM radio station at Tretes Prigen-Raya Pasuruan. The broadcasters used Javanese-Indonesia code switching during broadcasting dangdut music program. This study was aimed to get the answers of the research problems, namely (1) what kinds of code switching are demonstrated by broadcasters of dangdut music programs in Panorama FM radio station in Tretes Prigen-Raya Pasuruan? And (2) what are the contexts of code switching used by the broadcasters of dangdut music programs at Panorama FM radio station? This study is a descriptive qualitative method, because it is related to the problem of how to describe the language phenomenon in radio broadcasting utterance and the sociolinguistic aspect when the broadcasters of radio Panorama dangdut music program were doing code switching while they were on air. In collecting the data, the writer recorded the utterances of the broadcasters when they were on air, then transcribed them from harddisk, and identified them based on their form. After conducted this research, the writer found that the code switching used by the broadcasters contained three forms of code switching; they were Javanese clause, tag, and exclamation. He also found code switching that was occurred in Panorama FM triggered by three contexts; they were codes switching for humorous expression, for emphasizing speech content, and for expressing desired expression

Agricultural information and FM radio: acceptability of the combination in Tennessee

The overall objective of this study is to determine as far as possible from the data available whether agriculture has a place in FM broadcasting in Tennessee. This study has, in addition, several specific objectives: (1) to determine what the attitude of FM radio station program directors is in working with Extension subject matter material and Extension agents, (2) to determine what the attitude of Extension agents is in working with FM radio stations, (3) to determine what types of audiences own FM radio receivers and listen to FM radio stations, (4) to determine what Extension has to offer that these audiences might desire; e.g. commercial agricultural information, home economics, gardening, insect control, etc., and (5) to determine if Extension has a role in FM broadcasting and, if so, what is its role

A study to investigate the uptake of digital technology in Ruben FM radio station

    Get PDF
Having realized the potential of digital technologies, radio stations in Kenya have embraced technology to improve “interactivity with their listeners”. However, the extent to which digital technologies are used at radio stations and existing challenges and opportunities in uptake is yet to be established. The research\u27s primary goal was to investigate technology uptake in Ruben FM radio stations. Specifically, the study sought to examine the extent of use of the existing digital technologies in Ruben FM radio station, explore other digital technology opportunities for uptake in Ruben FM radio station and establish challenges facing digital technology uptake in Ruben FM radio station. The study was based on Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The study adopted a cross-sectional research design. The target and sample size were 20 employees at Ruben FM. The primary data was collected using both questionnaires and focus group discussions. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, mean and standard deviation. Qualitative data generated from open-ended questionnaires and focus group discussions were analysed using content analysis. The study established that existing digital technologies are used daily to a greater extent at Ruben FM, including social media sites like Facebook, WhatsApp, twitter, Instagram and YouTube, podcasts, and radio websites. The study found various challenges facing digital technology uptake by Ruben FM radio station. These include power supply interruptions and limited access to the internet, among others. The study recommended that the management of Ruben FM radio station should ensure the installation of a backup generator to solve power supply interruptions. The study also recommended that the management of Ruben FM radio station should create an offline radio mobile app that will enable more people with android phones to access radio programs without using the internet
