    Automatic extrinsic calibration of camera networks based on pedestrians

    Extrinsic camera calibration is essential for any computer vision tasks in a camera network. Usually, researchers place calibration objects in the scene to calibrate the cameras. However, when installing cameras in the field, this approach can be costly and impractical, especially when recalibration is needed. This paper proposes a novel accurate and fully automatic extrinsic calibration framework for camera networks with partially overlapping views. It is based on the analysis of pedestrian tracks without other calibration objects. Compared to the state of the art, the new method is fully automatic and robust. Our method detects human poses in the camera images and then models walking persons as vertical sticks. We propose a brute-force method to determine the pedestrian correspondences in multiple camera images. This information along with 3D estimated locations of the head and feet of the pedestrians are then used to compute the camera extrinsic matrices. We verified the robustness of the method in different camera setups and for both single pedestrian and multiple walking people. The results show that the proposed method can obtain the triangulation error of a few centimeters. Typically, it requires 40 seconds of collecting data from walking people to reach this accuracy in controlled environments and a few minutes for uncontrolled environments. As well as compute relative extrinsic parameters connecting the coordinate systems of cameras in a pairwise fashion automatically. Our proposed method could perform well in various situations such as multi-person, occlusions, or even at real intersections on the street

    Dynamic Arrival Rate Estimation for Campus Mobility on Demand Network Graphs

    Mobility On Demand (MOD) systems are revolutionizing transportation in urban settings by improving vehicle utilization and reducing parking congestion. A key factor in the success of an MOD system is the ability to measure and respond to real-time customer arrival data. Real time traffic arrival rate data is traditionally difficult to obtain due to the need to install fixed sensors throughout the MOD network. This paper presents a framework for measuring pedestrian traffic arrival rates using sensors onboard the vehicles that make up the MOD fleet. A novel distributed fusion algorithm is presented which combines onboard LIDAR and camera sensor measurements to detect trajectories of pedestrians with a 90% detection hit rate with 1.5 false positives per minute. A novel moving observer method is introduced to estimate pedestrian arrival rates from pedestrian trajectories collected from mobile sensors. However, when installing cameras in the field, this approach can be costly and impractical, especially when recalibration is needed. This paper proposes a novel, accurate and fully automatic extrinsic calibration framework for camera networks with partially overlapping views. The proposed method considers the pedestrians in the observed scene as the calibration objects and analyzes the pedestrian tracks to obtain extrinsic parameters. Compared to the state of the art, the new method is fully automatic and robust in various environments. Our method detect human poses in the camera images and then models walking persons as vertical sticks. We apply a brute-force method to determines the correspondence between persons in multiple camera images. This information along with 3D estimated locations of the top and the bottom of the pedestrians are then used to compute the extrinsic calibration matrices. We also propose a novel method to calibrate the camera network by only using the top and centerline of the person when the bottom of the person is not available in heavily occluded scenes. We verified the robustness of the method in different camera setups and for both single and multiple walking people. The results show that the triangulation error of a few centimeters can be obtained. Typically, it requires less than one minute of observing the walking people to reach this accuracy in controlled environments. It also just takes a few minutes to collect enough data for the calibration in uncontrolled environments.     A Wearable Data Collection System for Studying Micro-Level E-Scooter Behavior in Naturalistic Road Environment

    As one of the most popular micro-mobility options, e-scooters are spreading in hundreds of big cities and college towns in the US and worldwide. In the meantime, e-scooters are also posing new challenges to traffic safety. In general, e-scooters are suggested to be ridden in bike lanes/sidewalks or share the road with cars at the maximum speed of about 15-20 mph, which is more flexible and much faster than the pedestrains and bicyclists. These features make e-scooters challenging for human drivers, pedestrians, vehicle active safety modules, and self-driving modules to see and interact. To study this new mobility option and address e-scooter riders' and other road users' safety concerns, this paper proposes a wearable data collection system for investigating the micro-level e-Scooter motion behavior in a Naturalistic road environment. An e-Scooter-based data acquisition system has been developed by integrating LiDAR, cameras, and GPS using the robot operating system (ROS). Software frameworks are developed to support hardware interfaces, sensor operation, sensor synchronization, and data saving.     Distant Vehicle Detection Using Radar and Vision

    For autonomous vehicles to be able to operate successfully they need to be aware of other vehicles with sufficient time to make safe, stable plans. Given the possible closing speeds between two vehicles, this necessitates the ability to accurately detect distant vehicles. Many current image-based object detectors using convolutional neural networks exhibit excellent performance on existing datasets such as KITTI. However, the performance of these networks falls when detecting small (distant) objects. We demonstrate that incorporating radar data can boost performance in these difficult situations.     The Visual Social Distancing Problem

    One of the main and most effective measures to contain the recent viral outbreak is the maintenance of the so-called Social Distancing (SD). To comply with this constraint, workplaces, public institutions, transports and schools will likely adopt restrictions over the minimum inter-personal distance between people. Given this actual scenario, it is crucial to massively measure the compliance to such physical constraint in our life, in order to figure out the reasons of the possible breaks of such distance limitations, and understand if this implies a possible threat given the scene context. All of this, complying with privacy policies and making the measurement acceptable. To this end, we introduce the Visual Social Distancing (VSD) problem, defined as the automatic estimation of the inter-personal distance from an image, and the characterization of the related people aggregations. VSD is pivotal for a non-invasive analysis to whether people comply with the SD restriction, and to provide statistics about the level of safety of specific areas whenever this constraint is violated. We then discuss how VSD relates with previous literature in Social Signal Processing and indicate which existing Computer Vision methods can be used to manage such problem.
