    Extraction and Categorisation of User Activity from Windows Restore Points

    The extraction of the user activity is one of the main goals in the analysis of digital evidence. In this paper we present a methodology for extracting this activity by comparing multiple Restore Points found in the Windows XP operating system. The registry copies represent a snapshot of the state of the system at a certain point in time. Differences between them can reveal user activity from one instant to another. The algorithms for comparing the hives and interpreting the results are of high complexity. We develop an approach that takes into account the nature of the investigation and the characteristics of the hives to reduce the complexity of the comparison and result interpretation processes. The approach concentrates on hives that present higher activity and highlights only those differences that are relevant to the investigation. The approach is implemented as a software tool that is able to compare any set of offline hives and categorise the results according to the user needs. The categorisation of the results, in terms of activity will help the investigator in interpreting the results. In this paper we present a general concept of result categorisation to prove its efficiency on Windows XP, but these can be adapted to any Windows versions including the latest versions

    Automatic Screening and Classification of Diabetic Retinopathy Eye Fundus Image

    Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a disorder of the retinal vasculature. It develops to some degree in nearly all patients with long-standing diabetes mellitus and can result in blindness. Screening of DR is essential for both early detection and early treatment. This thesis aims to investigate automatic methods for diabetic retinopathy detection and subsequently develop an effective system for the detection and screening of diabetic retinopathy. The presented diabetic retinopathy research involves three development stages. Firstly, the thesis presents the development of a preliminary classification and screening system for diabetic retinopathy using eye fundus images. The research will then focus on the detection of the earliest signs of diabetic retinopathy, which are the microaneurysms. The detection of microaneurysms at an early stage is vital and is the first step in preventing diabetic retinopathy. Finally, the thesis will present decision support systems for the detection of diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy in eye fundus images. The detection of maculopathy, which are yellow lesions near the macula, is essential as it will eventually cause the loss of vision if the affected macula is not treated in time. An accurate retinal screening, therefore, is required to assist the retinal screeners to classify the retinal images effectively. Highly efficient and accurate image processing techniques must thus be used in order to produce an effective screening of diabetic retinopathy. In addition to the proposed diabetic retinopathy detection systems, this thesis will present a new dataset, and will highlight the dataset collection, the expert diagnosis process and the advantages of the new dataset, compared to other public eye fundus images datasets available. The new dataset will be useful to researchers and practitioners working in the retinal imaging area and would widely encourage comparative studies in the field of diabetic retinopathy research. It is envisaged that the proposed decision support system for clinical screening would greatly contribute to and assist the management and the detection of diabetic retinopathy. It is also hoped that the developed automatic detection techniques will assist clinicians to diagnose diabetic retinopathy at an early stage

    Application of Common Sense Computing for the Development of a Novel Knowledge-Based Opinion Mining Engine

    The ways people express their opinions and sentiments have radically changed in the past few years thanks to the advent of social networks, web communities, blogs, wikis and other online collaborative media. The distillation of knowledge from this huge amount of unstructured information can be a key factor for marketers who want to create an image or identity in the minds of their customers for their product, brand, or organisation. These online social data, however, remain hardly accessible to computers, as they are specifically meant for human consumption. The automatic analysis of online opinions, in fact, involves a deep understanding of natural language text by machines, from which we are still very far. Hitherto, online information retrieval has been mainly based on algorithms relying on the textual representation of web-pages. Such algorithms are very good at retrieving texts, splitting them into parts, checking the spelling and counting their words. But when it comes to interpreting sentences and extracting meaningful information, their capabilities are known to be very limited. Existing approaches to opinion mining and sentiment analysis, in particular, can be grouped into three main categories: keyword spotting, in which text is classified into categories based on the presence of fairly unambiguous affect words; lexical affinity, which assigns arbitrary words a probabilistic affinity for a particular emotion; statistical methods, which calculate the valence of affective keywords and word co-occurrence frequencies on the base of a large training corpus. Early works aimed to classify entire documents as containing overall positive or negative polarity, or rating scores of reviews. Such systems were mainly based on supervised approaches relying on manually labelled samples, such as movie or product reviews where the opinionist’s overall positive or negative attitude was explicitly indicated. However, opinions and sentiments do not occur only at document level, nor they are limited to a single valence or target. Contrary or complementary attitudes toward the same topic or multiple topics can be present across the span of a document. In more recent works, text analysis granularity has been taken down to segment and sentence level, e.g., by using presence of opinion-bearing lexical items (single words or n-grams) to detect subjective sentences, or by exploiting association rule mining for a feature-based analysis of product reviews. These approaches, however, are still far from being able to infer the cognitive and affective information associated with natural language as they mainly rely on knowledge bases that are still too limited to efficiently process text at sentence level. In this thesis, common sense computing techniques are further developed and applied to bridge the semantic gap between word-level natural language data and the concept-level opinions conveyed by these. In particular, the ensemble application of graph mining and multi-dimensionality reduction techniques on two common sense knowledge bases was exploited to develop a novel intelligent engine for open-domain opinion mining and sentiment analysis. The proposed approach, termed sentic computing, performs a clause-level semantic analysis of text, which allows the inference of both the conceptual and emotional information associated with natural language opinions and, hence, a more efficient passage from (unstructured) textual information to (structured) machine-processable data. The engine was tested on three different resources, namely a Twitter hashtag repository, a LiveJournal database and a PatientOpinion dataset, and its performance compared both with results obtained using standard sentiment analysis techniques and using different state-of-the-art knowledge bases such as Princeton’s WordNet, MIT’s ConceptNet and Microsoft’s Probase. Differently from most currently available opinion mining services, the developed engine does not base its analysis on a limited set of affect words and their co-occurrence frequencies, but rather on common sense concepts and the cognitive and affective valence conveyed by these. This allows the engine to be domain-independent and, hence, to be embedded in any opinion mining system for the development of intelligent applications in multiple fields such as Social Web, HCI and e-health. Looking ahead, the combined novel use of different knowledge bases and of common sense reasoning techniques for opinion mining proposed in this work, will, eventually, pave the way for development of more bio-inspired approaches to the design of natural language processing systems capable of handling knowledge, retrieving it when necessary, making analogies and learning from experience

    Action Categorisation in Multimodal Instructions

    We present an explorative study for the (semi-)automatic categorisation of actions in Dutch multimodal first aid instructions, where the actions needed to successfully execute the procedure in question are presented verbally and in pictures. We start with the categorisation of verbalised actions and expect that this will later facilitate the identification of those actions in the pictures, which is known to be hard. Comparisons of and user-based experimentation with the verbal and visual representations will allow us to determine the effectiveness of picture-text combinations and will eventually support the automatic generation of multimodal documents. We used Natural Language Processing tools to identify and categorise 2,388 verbs in a corpus of 78 multimodal instructions (MIs). We show that the main action structure of an instruction can be retrieved through verb identification using the Alpino parser followed by a manual election operation. The selected main action verbs were subsequently generalised and categorised with the use of Cornetto, a lexical resource that combines a Dutch Wordnet and a Dutch Reference Lexicon. Results show that these tools are useful but also have limitations which make human intervention essential to guide an accurate categorisation of actions in multimodal instructions
