    Many of the research approaches to smartphones actually regard them as more or less transparent points of access to other kinds of communication experiences. That is, rather than considering the smartphone as something in itself, the researchers look at how individuals use the smartphone for their communicative purposes, whether these be talking, surfing the web, using on-line data access for off-site data sources, downloading or uploading materials, or any kind of interaction with social media. They focus not so much on the smartphone itself but on the activities that people engage in with their smartphones

    The students’ acceptance and use of their university’s virtual learning environment

    The proliferation of digital and mobile devices, including; smartphones and tablets has led policy makers and practitioners to include these ubiquitous technologies in the realms of education. A thorough review of the relevant literature suggests that both students as well as their course instructors are becoming increasingly acquainted with the adoption of education technologies in the higher educational context. Hence, this study explores the university students’ readiness to engage with the virtual learning environment (VLE). The methodology has integrated measuring items that were drawn from the educational technology literature, including the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology, to better understand the students’ perceptions towards VLE. It investigated whether they were influenced by their instructors or by fellow students to use VLE. The results suggest that most of the research participants were using this technology as they believed that it supported them in their learning outcomes. The findings also revealed that the students were not coerced by their course instructors or by other individuals to engage with VLE. Moreover, the university’s facilitating conditions had a significant effect on the participants’ usage of VLE. In conclusion, this contribution puts forward key implications to practitioners. It also clarifies the limitations of this study and proposes future research directions.peer-reviewe

    Why do People Adopt, or Reject, Smartphone Security Tools?

    A large variety of security tools exist for Smartphones, to help their owners to secure the phones and prevent unauthorised others from accessing their data and services. These range from screen locks to antivirus software to password managers. Yet many Smartphone owners do not use these tools despite their being free and easy to use. We were interested in exploring this apparent anomaly. A number of researchers have applied existing models of behaviour from other disciplines to try to understand these kinds of behaviours in a security context, and a great deal of research has examined adoption of screen locking mechanisms. We review the proposed models and consider how they might fail to describe adoption behaviours. We then present the Integrated Model of Behaviour Prediction (IMBP), a richer model than the ones tested thus far. We consider the kinds of factors that could be incorporated into this model in order to understand Smartphone owner adoption, or rejection, of security tools. The model seems promising, based on existing literature, and we plan to test its efficacy in future studies

    The intention to use mobile digital library technology: A focus group study in the United Arab Emirates

    IGI Global (“IGI”) granted Brunel University London the permission to archive this article in BURA (http://bura.brunel.ac.uk).This paper presents a qualitative study on student adoption of mobile library technology in a developing world context. The findings support the applicability of a number of existing constructs from the technology acceptance literature, such as perceived ease of use, social influence and trust. However, they also suggest the need to modify some adoption factors previously found in the literature to fit the specific context of mobile library adoption. Perceived value was found to be a more relevant overarching adoption factor than perceived usefulness for this context. Facilitating conditions were identified as important but these differed somewhat from those covered in earlier literature. The research also uncovered the importance of trialability for this type of application. The findings provide a basis for improving theory in the area of mobile library adoption and suggest a number of practical design recommendations to help designers of mobile library technology to create applications that meet user needs

    Culture in the design of mHealth UI:An effort to increase acceptance among culturally specific groups

    Purpose: Designers of mobile applications have long understood the importance of users’ preferences in making the user experience easier, convenient and therefore valuable. The cultural aspects of groups of users are among the key features of users’ design preferences, because each group’s preferences depend on various features that are culturally compatible. The process of integrating culture into the design of a system has always been an important ingredient for effective and interactive human computer interface. This study aims to investigate the design of a mobile health (mHealth) application user interface (UI) based on Arabic culture. It was argued that integrating certain cultural values of specific groups of users into the design of UI would increase their acceptance of the technology. Design/methodology/approach: A total of 135 users responded to an online survey about their acceptance of a culturally designed mHealth. Findings: The findings showed that culturally based language, colours, layout and images had a significant relationship with users’ behavioural intention to use the culturally based mHealth UI. Research limitations/implications: First, the sample and the data collected of this study were restricted to Arab users and Arab culture; therefore, the results cannot be generalized to other cultures and users. Second, the adapted unified theory of acceptance and use of technology model was used in this study instead of the new version, which may expose new perceptions. Third, the cultural aspects of UI design in this study were limited to the images, colours, language and layout. Practical implications: It encourages UI designers to implement the relevant cultural aspects while developing mobile applications. Originality/value: Embedding Arab cultural aspects in designing UI for mobile applications to satisfy Arab users and enhance their acceptance toward using mobile applications, which will reflect positively on their lives.</p

    Integrating Mobile Technology Quality Service, Trust and Cultural Factors Into Technology Acceptance of Mobile Learning: A Case of the Jordan Higher Education Institution

    The success of mobile learning system in higher education depends a lot on the students‟ acceptance of the technology. From an early investigation, students at Jordanian higher educational institutions however are still unwilling to use mobile learning applications and services. The students‟ acceptance should be a key concern for the management of a university in considering the implementation of mobile learning system. The objective of this study is to identify the factors that influence the acceptance of mobile learning system based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). A total of 500 questionnaires were distributed to five universities in Jordan, out of which 398 question-naires were returned, representing 79% response rate. Statistical techniques including bivariate correlation analyses, multiple linear and stepwise regression analyses, T-tests, and One-Way ANOVA were used. The results showed three core determinants: Culture, Trust, and Technology Service Quality as significantly influenced Perceived Usefulness and Perceived Ease of Use. Perceived Usefulness and Perceived Ease of Use moreover have significantly determined Attitude, while Perceived Usefulness and Attitude, have significantly determined users‟ Behavioral Intention. Among the five variables of culture, the study found Power Distance to be the most contributive variable, and Trust in University as the most contributive variable under the Trust factor. Meanwhile, the most contributive variable in Technology Service Quality factor is Accessibility. For the Demographic factors, the study proved that gender, mobile learning experience, and mobile internet experience have significantly influenced students‟ acceptance. Based on the results obtained, the study proposes a model of mobile learning acceptance based on TAM. A comprehensive understanding of this model will assist decision makers to enhance the acceptance of the mobile learning system among students in Jordanian higher educational institutions in the future

    Investigating the adoption and use of smartphones in the UK : a silver-surfers perspective

However, not all members of society are accepting and using smart phones; more specifically, for this research study silver-surfers or older adults (50+) are a demographic group displaying such an attitude. Currently, there is minimal knowledge of the reasons for older adults adopting and using smartphones. Bearing this in mind, this research study aims to investigate the adoption and usage behaviours of silver-surfers. For this purpose, the conceptual framework applied to this research draws factors from the following theories: Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), the Diffusion of Innovations theory (DoI), and TAM3 (Technology Acceptance Model). From the online survey of 204 completed replies it was found that observability, compatibility, social influence, facilitating conditions, effort expectancy and enjoyment are important to the adoption and use of smartphones within silver-surfers. The contributions of this research are an identification and understanding of the factors that encourage or inhibit smartphone use within the older adult population. Second, this research can inform the design of computing devices and applications used for silver-surfers.     An empirical investigation of smartphone technology acceptance among Universiti Utara Malaysia students

    This study investigated smartphone technology acceptance among Universiti Utara Malaysian (UUM) students by using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The rapid diffusion of computer technology into smartphone increases smartphone penetration among Universiti Utara Malaysia students. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship of Perceived Ease of Use (PEU) and Perceived Usefulness (PU) as independent variables, and Attitude (ATT) and Behavioural intention (BI) as dependent variables on Smartphone Technology Acceptance among Universiti Utara Malaysia students. In addition, in this research Gender was used as a moderator to test the relationship between Attitude (ATT) and Behavioural intention (BI). In order to collect data a total of 500 questionnaires were distributed to (UUM) final year and postgraduate students in three colleges COB, CAS and COLGIS. The hypothesis results showed that there was a significant relationship among the four variables except Gender. This was because Gender failed to moderate in explaining the relationship between Attitude (ATT) and Behavioural intention (BI). On the other hand the statistical result showed that there was partial mediation effect of Perceived Usefulness (PU) on the relationship between Perceived Ease (PEU) of Use and Attitude (ATT) on Smartphone Technology Acceptance among Universiti Utara Malaysian students. Furthermore the researcher found that there was a significant relationship between both the dependent variables - Attitude (ATT) and Behavioural intention (BI) on smartphone technology acceptance among UUM students. The overall finding showed that technology advancement and breakthrough design of smartphone technology are the key factors that attract Universiti Utara Malaysia students to accept smartphone technology. On the other hand, usefulness and ease of use of the smartphone technology play important roles in influencing (UUM) students to have the intention to use smartphone technology in accomplishing their personal tasks.     When technology-based learning is the only option : evaluating perceived usefulness of social media

    During unusual times involving discontinued face to face sessions in formal education settings, mobile learning (m-learning) involving social networking sites has become a popular alternative since students are always in possession of handheld electronic devices. When connection through technology was the only option due to social distancing in current pandemic, students who were already active extensive users of social networks found online learning as a new way of getting formal education. The objective of this study was to explore how the state of student’s behavioral intention for social media based online learning is driven by external factors like subjective norm and self-efficacy. To fulfill this aim, this study uses a quantitative approach to study the factors that mediate the decision behavior of students towards social media employed as a learning platform and use of m-learning involving social networks. A sample of management science students (n= 255) from four universities participated in the research. Analysis of data suggested that subjective norm and self-efficacy were significant predictors for student participation in e-learning initiatives involving social media and networks. The proposed serial mediation model revealed that self-efficacy and perceived usefulness in that order were playing a positive significant role in student use of social networking for learning. No significant differences were observed between either gender when self-efficacy, perceived usefulness, and use of social media in education were considered. © 202
