    Memory Protection in a Real-Time Operating System

    During the last years the number of Electrical Control Units (ECU) in vehicles have increased rapidly with the effect of increasing costs. To meet this trend and reduce costs, applications have to be centralized into more powerful ECUs. This gives rise to new problems such as data and temporal integrity. The thesis gives an introduction to these new problems and a solution based on static time-triggered scheduling combined with memory protection. Memory protection mechanisms and hardware are evaluated, resulting in the recommendation of a platform. The thesis also propose modification and extensions to a real-time operating system used today within the Volvo Group. The work has been conducted at Volvo Technology (VTEC) in Gothenburg.     Studying the effects of adding spatiality to a process algebra model

    We use NetLogo to create simulations of two models of disease transmission originally expressed in WSCCS. This allows us to introduce spatiality into the models and explore the consequences of having different contact structures among the agents. In previous work, mean field equations were derived from the WSCCS models, giving a description of the aggregate behaviour of the overall population of agents. These results turned out to differ from results obtained by another team using cellular automata models, which differ from process algebra by being inherently spatial. By using NetLogo we are able to explore whether spatiality, and resulting differences in the contact structures in the two kinds of models, are the reason for this different results. Our tentative conclusions, based at this point on informal observations of simulation results, are that space does indeed make a big difference. If space is ignored and individuals are allowed to mix randomly, then the simulations yield results that closely match the mean field equations, and consequently also match the associated global transmission terms (explained below). At the opposite extreme, if individuals can only contact their immediate neighbours, the simulation results are very different from the mean field equations (and also do not match the global transmission terms). These results are not surprising, and are consistent with other cellular automata-based approaches. We found that it was easy and convenient to implement and simulate the WSCCS models within NetLogo, and we recommend this approach to anyone wishing to explore the effects of introducing spatiality into a process algebra model

    Accessible software frameworks for reproducible image analysis of host-pathogen interactions

    Um die Mechanismen hinter lebensgefährlichen Krankheiten zu verstehen, müssen die zugrundeliegenden Interaktionen zwischen den Wirtszellen und krankheitserregenden Mikroorganismen bekannt sein. Die kontinuierlichen Verbesserungen in bildgebenden Verfahren und Computertechnologien ermöglichen die Anwendung von Methoden aus der bildbasierten Systembiologie, welche moderne Computeralgorithmen benutzt um das Verhalten von Zellen, Geweben oder ganzen Organen präzise zu messen. Um den Standards des digitalen Managements von Forschungsdaten zu genügen, müssen Algorithmen den FAIR-Prinzipien (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability) entsprechen und zur Verbreitung ebenjener in der wissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaft beitragen. Dies ist insbesondere wichtig für interdisziplinäre Teams bestehend aus Experimentatoren und Informatikern, in denen Computerprogramme zur Verbesserung der Kommunikation und schnellerer Adaption von neuen Technologien beitragen können. In dieser Arbeit wurden daher Software-Frameworks entwickelt, welche dazu beitragen die FAIR-Prinzipien durch die Entwicklung von standardisierten, reproduzierbaren, hochperformanten, und leicht zugänglichen Softwarepaketen zur Quantifizierung von Interaktionen in biologischen System zu verbreiten. Zusammenfassend zeigt diese Arbeit wie Software-Frameworks zu der Charakterisierung von Interaktionen zwischen Wirtszellen und Pathogenen beitragen können, indem der Entwurf und die Anwendung von quantitativen und FAIR-kompatiblen Bildanalyseprogrammen vereinfacht werden. Diese Verbesserungen erleichtern zukünftige Kollaborationen mit Lebenswissenschaftlern und Medizinern, was nach dem Prinzip der bildbasierten Systembiologie zur Entwicklung von neuen Experimenten, Bildgebungsverfahren, Algorithmen, und Computermodellen führen wird

    A Sensing Platform to Monitor Sleep Efficiency

    Sleep plays a fundamental role in the human life. Sleep research is mainly focused on the understanding of the sleep patterns, stages and duration. An accurate sleep monitoring can detect early signs of sleep deprivation and insomnia consequentially implementing mechanisms for preventing and overcoming these problems. Recently, sleep monitoring has been achieved using wearable technologies, able to analyse also the body movements, but old people can encounter some difficulties in using and maintaining these devices. In this paper, we propose an unobtrusive sensing platform able to analyze body movements, infer sleep duration and awakenings occurred along the night, and evaluating the sleep efficiency index. To prove the feasibility of the suggested method we did a pilot trial in which several healthy users have been involved. The sensors were installed within the bed and, on each day, each user was administered with the Groningen Sleep Quality Scale questionnaire to evaluate the user’s perceived sleep quality. Finally, we show potential correlation between a perceived evaluation with an objective index as the sleep efficiency.</p
