A Framework for Genetic Algorithms Based on Hadoop
Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are powerful metaheuristic techniques mostly used in
many real-world applications. The sequential execution of GAs requires
considerable computational power both in time and resources. Nevertheless, GAs
are naturally parallel and accessing a parallel platform such as Cloud is easy
and cheap. Apache Hadoop is one of the common services that can be used for
parallel applications. However, using Hadoop to develop a parallel version of
GAs is not simple without facing its inner workings. Even though some
sequential frameworks for GAs already exist, there is no framework supporting
the development of GA applications that can be executed in parallel. In this
paper is described a framework for parallel GAs on the Hadoop platform,
following the paradigm of MapReduce. The main purpose of this framework is to
allow the user to focus on the aspects of GA that are specific to the problem
to be addressed, being sure that this task is going to be correctly executed on
the Cloud with a good performance. The framework has been also exploited to
develop an application for Feature Subset Selection problem. A preliminary
analysis of the performance of the developed GA application has been performed
using three datasets and shown very promising performance

Covariate-assisted ranking and screening for large-scale two-sample inference
Two-sample multiple testing has a wide range of applications. The conventionalpractice first reduces the original observations to a vector of p-values and then chooses a cutoffto adjust for multiplicity. However, this data reduction step could cause significant loss ofinformation and thus lead to suboptimal testing procedures.We introduce a new framework fortwo-sample multiple testing by incorporating a carefully constructed auxiliary variable in inferenceto improve the power. A data-driven multiple-testing procedure is developed by employinga covariate-assisted ranking and screening (CARS) approach that optimally combines the informationfrom both the primary and the auxiliary variables. The proposed CARS procedureis shown to be asymptotically valid and optimal for false discovery rate control. The procedureis implemented in the R package CARS. Numerical results confirm the effectiveness of CARSin false discovery rate control and show that it achieves substantial power gain over existingmethods. CARS is also illustrated through an application to the analysis of a satellite imagingdata set for supernova detection
Machine Learning in Automated Text Categorization
The automated categorization (or classification) of texts into predefined
categories has witnessed a booming interest in the last ten years, due to the
increased availability of documents in digital form and the ensuing need to
organize them. In the research community the dominant approach to this problem
is based on machine learning techniques: a general inductive process
automatically builds a classifier by learning, from a set of preclassified
documents, the characteristics of the categories. The advantages of this
approach over the knowledge engineering approach (consisting in the manual
definition of a classifier by domain experts) are a very good effectiveness,
considerable savings in terms of expert manpower, and straightforward
portability to different domains. This survey discusses the main approaches to
text categorization that fall within the machine learning paradigm. We will
discuss in detail issues pertaining to three different problems, namely

Activity understanding and unusual event detection in surveillance videos
PhDComputer scientists have made ceaseless efforts to replicate cognitive video understanding abilities
of human brains onto autonomous vision systems. As video surveillance cameras become
ubiquitous, there is a surge in studies on automated activity understanding and unusual event detection
in surveillance videos. Nevertheless, video content analysis in public scenes remained a
formidable challenge due to intrinsic difficulties such as severe inter-object occlusion in crowded
scene and poor quality of recorded surveillance footage. Moreover, it is nontrivial to achieve
robust detection of unusual events, which are rare, ambiguous, and easily confused with noise.
This thesis proposes solutions for resolving ambiguous visual observations and overcoming unreliability
of conventional activity analysis methods by exploiting multi-camera visual context
and human feedback.
The thesis first demonstrates the importance of learning visual context for establishing reliable
reasoning on observed activity in a camera network. In the proposed approach, a new Cross
Canonical Correlation Analysis (xCCA) is formulated to discover and quantify time delayed pairwise
correlations of regional activities observed within and across multiple camera views. This
thesis shows that learning time delayed pairwise activity correlations offers valuable contextual
information for (1) spatial and temporal topology inference of a camera network, (2) robust person
re-identification, and (3) accurate activity-based video temporal segmentation. Crucially, in
contrast to conventional methods, the proposed approach does not rely on either intra-camera or
inter-camera object tracking; it can thus be applied to low-quality surveillance videos featuring
severe inter-object occlusions.
Second, to detect global unusual event across multiple disjoint cameras, this thesis extends
visual context learning from pairwise relationship to global time delayed dependency between
regional activities. Specifically, a Time Delayed Probabilistic Graphical Model (TD-PGM) is
proposed to model the multi-camera activities and their dependencies. Subtle global unusual
events are detected and localised using the model as context-incoherent patterns across multiple
camera views. In the model, different nodes represent activities in different decomposed re3
gions from different camera views, and the directed links between nodes encoding time delayed
dependencies between activities observed within and across camera views. In order to learn optimised
time delayed dependencies in a TD-PGM, a novel two-stage structure learning approach
is formulated by combining both constraint-based and scored-searching based structure learning
methods.
Third, to cope with visual context changes over time, this two-stage structure learning approach
is extended to permit tractable incremental update of both TD-PGM parameters and its
structure. As opposed to most existing studies that assume static model once learned, the proposed
incremental learning allows a model to adapt itself to reflect the changes in the current
visual context, such as subtle behaviour drift over time or removal/addition of cameras. Importantly,
the incremental structure learning is achieved without either exhaustive search in a large
graph structure space or storing all past observations in memory, making the proposed solution
memory and time efficient.
Forth, an active learning approach is presented to incorporate human feedback for on-line
unusual event detection. Contrary to most existing unsupervised methods that perform passive
mining for unusual events, the proposed approach automatically requests supervision for critical
points to resolve ambiguities of interest, leading to more robust detection of subtle unusual
events. The active learning strategy is formulated as a stream-based solution, i.e. it makes decision
on-the-fly on whether to request label for each unlabelled sample observed in sequence.
It selects adaptively two active learning criteria, namely likelihood criterion and uncertainty criterion
to achieve (1) discovery of unknown event classes and (2) refinement of classification
boundary.
The effectiveness of the proposed approaches is validated using videos captured from busy
public scenes such as underground stations and traffic intersections
Exploiting Structural Regularities and Beyond: Vision-based Localization and Mapping in Man-Made Environments
Image-based estimation of camera motion, known as visual odometry
(VO), plays a very important role in many robotic applications
such as control and navigation of unmanned mobile robots,
especially when no external navigation reference signal is
available. The core problem of VO is the estimation of the
camera’s ego-motion (i.e. tracking) either between successive
frames, namely relative pose estimation, or with respect to a
global map, namely absolute pose estimation. This thesis aims to
develop efficient, accurate and robust VO solutions by taking
advantage of structural regularities in man-made environments,
such as piece-wise planar structures, Manhattan World and more
generally, contours and edges. Furthermore, to handle challenging
scenarios that are beyond the limits of classical sensor based VO
solutions, we investigate a recently emerging sensor — the
event camera and study on event-based mapping — one of the key
problems in the event-based VO/SLAM. The main achievements are
summarized as follows.
First, we revisit an old topic on relative pose estimation:
accurately and robustly estimating the fundamental matrix given a
collection of independently estimated homograhies. Three
classical methods are reviewed and then we show a simple but
nontrivial two-step normalization
within the direct linear method that achieves similar performance
to the less attractive and more computationally intensive
hallucinated points based method.
Second, an efficient 3D rotation estimation algorithm for depth
cameras in piece-wise planar environments is presented. It shows
that by using surface normal vectors as an input, planar modes in
the corresponding density distribution function can be discovered
and continuously
tracked using efficient non-parametric estimation techniques. The
relative rotation can be estimated by registering entire bundles
of planar modes by using robust L1-norm minimization.
Third, an efficient alternative to the iterative closest point
algorithm for real-time tracking of modern depth cameras in
ManhattanWorlds is developed. We exploit the common orthogonal
structure of man-made environments in order to decouple the
estimation of the rotation and the three degrees of freedom of
the translation. The derived camera orientation is absolute and
thus free of long-term drift, which in turn benefits the accuracy
of the translation estimation as well.
Fourth, we look into a more general structural
regularity—edges. A real-time VO system that uses Canny edges
is proposed for RGB-D cameras. Two novel alternatives to
classical distance transforms are developed with great properties
that significantly improve the classical Euclidean distance field
based methods in terms of efficiency, accuracy and robustness.
Finally, to deal with challenging scenarios that go beyond what
standard RGB/RGB-D cameras can handle, we investigate the
recently emerging event camera and focus on the problem of 3D
reconstruction from data captured by a stereo event-camera rig
moving in a static
scene, such as in the context of stereo Simultaneous Localization
and Mapping
Alleviating the new user problem in collaborative filtering by exploiting personality information

In this paper we analyze viable solutions to the new user problem in collaborative filtering (CF) that are based on the exploitation of user personality information: (a) personality-based CF, which directly improves the recommendation prediction model by incorporating user personality information, (b) personality-based active learning, which utilizes personality information for identifying additional useful preference data in the target recommendation domain to be elicited from the user, and (c) personality-based cross-domain recommendation, which exploits personality information to better use user preference data from auxiliary domains which can be used to compensate the lack of user preference data in the target domain. We benchmark the effectiveness of these methods on large datasets that span several domains, namely movies, music and books. Our results show that personality-aware methods achieve performance improvements that range from 6 to 94 % for users completely new to the system, while increasing the novelty of the recommended items by 3-40 % with respect to the non-personalized popularity baseline. We also discuss the limitations of our approach and the situations in which the proposed methods can be better applied, hence providing guidelines for researchers and practitioners in the field.This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and

A Survey of Word Reordering in Statistical Machine Translation: Computational Models and Language Phenomena
Word reordering is one of the most difficult aspects of statistical machine
translation (SMT), and an important factor of its quality and efficiency.
Despite the vast amount of research published to date, the interest of the
community in this problem has not decreased, and no single method appears to be
strongly dominant across language pairs. Instead, the choice of the optimal
approach for a new translation task still seems to be mostly driven by
empirical trials. To orientate the reader in this vast and complex research
area, we present a comprehensive survey of word reordering viewed as a
statistical modeling challenge and as a natural language phenomenon. The survey
describes in detail how word reordering is modeled within different
string-based and tree-based SMT frameworks and as a stand-alone task, including
systematic overviews of the literature in advanced reordering modeling. We then
question why some approaches are more successful than others in different
language pairs. We argue that, besides measuring the amount of reordering, it
is important to understand which kinds of reordering occur in a given language
pair. To this end, we conduct a qualitative analysis of word reordering
phenomena in a diverse sample of language pairs, based on a large collection of
linguistic knowledge. Empirical results in the SMT literature are shown to
support the hypothesis that a few linguistic facts can be very useful to
anticipate the reordering characteristics of a language pair and to select the
