    Analysis of the IEEE 802.15.4a ultra wideband physical layer through wireless sensor network simulations in OMNET++

    Wireless Sensor Networks are the main representative of pervasive computing in large-scale physical environments. These networks consist of a large number of small, wireless devices embedded in the physical world to be used for surveillance, environmental monitoring or other data capture, processing and transfer applications. Ultra wideband has emerged as one of the newest and most promising concepts for wireless technology. Considering all its advantages it seems a likely communication technology candidate for future wireless sensor networks. This paper considers the viability of ultra wideband technology in wireless sensor networks by employing an IEEE 802.15.4a low-rate ultra wideband physical layer model in the OMNET++ simulation environment. An elaborate investigation into the inner workings of the IEEE 802.15.4a UWB physical layer is performed. Simulation experiments are used to provide a detailed analysis of the performance of the IEEE 802.15.4a UWB physical layer over several communication distances. A proposal for a cognitive, adaptive communication approach to optimize for speed and distance is also presented. Ultra wyeband het opgestaan as een van die nuutste en mees belowend konsepte vir draadlose kommunikasie tegnologie. As al die voordele van diĂ© kommunikasie tegnologie in ag geneem word, blyk dit om ’n baie goeie kandidaat te wees vir gebruik in toekomstige draadlose sensor netwerke.     Next Generation Auto-Identification and Traceability Technologies for Industry 5.0: A Methodology and Practical Use Case for the Shipbuilding Industry

    [Abstract] Industry 5.0 follows the steps of the Industry 4.0 paradigm and seeks for revolutionizing the way industries operate. In fact, Industry 5.0 focuses on research and innovation to support industrial production sustainability and place the well-being of industrial workers at the center of the production process. Thus, Industry 5.0 relies on three pillars: it is human-centric, it encourages sustainability and it is aimed at developing resilience against disruptions. Such core aspects cannot be fully achieved without a transparent end-to-end human-centered traceability throughout the value chain. As a consequence, Auto-Identification (Auto-ID) technologies play a key role, since they are able to provide automated item recognition, positioning and tracking without human intervention or in cooperation with industrial operators. Although the most popular Auto-ID technologies provide a certain degree of security and productivity, there are still open challenges for future Industry 5.0 factories. This article analyzes and evaluates the Auto-ID landscape and delivers a holistic perspective and understanding of the most popular and the latest technologies, looking for solutions that cope with harsh, diverse and complex industrial scenarios. In addition, it describes a methodology for selecting Auto-ID technologies for Industry 5.0 factories. Such a methodology is applied to a specific use case of the shipbuilding industry that requires identifying the main components of a ship during its construction and repair. To validate the outcomes of the methodology, a practical evaluation of passive and active UHF RFID tags was performed in an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) under construction, showing that a careful selection and evaluation of the tags enables product identification and tracking even in areas with a very high density of metallic objects.     Detecting and Tracking Vulnerable Road Users\u27 Trajectories Using Different Types of Sensors Fusion

    Vulnerable road user (VRU) detection and tracking has been a key challenge in transportation research. Different types of sensors such as the camera, LiDAR, and inertial measurement units (IMUs) have been used for this purpose. For detection and tracking with the camera, it is necessary to perform calibration to obtain correct GPS trajectories. This method is often tedious and necessitates accurate ground truth data. Moreover, if the camera performs any pan-tilt-zoom function, it is usually necessary to recalibrate the camera. In this thesis, we propose camera calibration using an auxiliary sensor: ultra-wideband (UWB). USBs are capable of tracking a road user with ten-centimeter-level accuracy. Once a VRU with a UWB traverses in the camera view, the UWB GPS data is fused with the camera to perform real-time calibration. As the experimental results in this thesis have shown, the camera is able to output better trajectories after calibration. It is expected that the use of UWB is needed only once to fuse the data and determine the correct trajectories at the same intersection and location of the camera. All other trajectories collected by the camera can be corrected using the same adjustment. In addition, data analysis was conducted to evaluate the performance of the UWB sensors. This study also predicted pedestrian trajectories using data fused by the UWB and smartphone sensors. UWB GPS coordinates are very accurate although it lacks other sensor parameters such as accelerometer, gyroscope, etc. The smartphone data have been used in this scenario to augment the UWB data. The two datasets were merged on the basis of the closest timestamp. The resulting dataset has precise latitude and longitude from UWB as well as the accelerometer, gyroscope, and speed data from smartphones making the fused dataset accurate and rich in terms of parameters. The fused dataset was then used to predict the GPS coordinates of pedestrians and scooters using LSTM

    Spectrum Sharing, Latency, and Security in 5G Networks with Application to IoT and Smart Grid

    The surge of mobile devices, such as smartphones, and tables, demands additional capacity. On the other hand, Internet-of-Things (IoT) and smart grid, which connects numerous sensors, devices, and machines require ubiquitous connectivity and data security. Additionally, some use cases, such as automated manufacturing process, automated transportation, and smart grid, require latency as low as 1 ms, and reliability as high as 99.99\%. To enhance throughput and support massive connectivity, sharing of the unlicensed spectrum (3.5 GHz, 5GHz, and mmWave) is a potential solution. On the other hand, to address the latency, drastic changes in the network architecture is required. The fifth generation (5G) cellular networks will embrace the spectrum sharing and network architecture modifications to address the throughput enhancement, massive connectivity, and low latency. To utilize the unlicensed spectrum, we propose a fixed duty cycle based coexistence of LTE and WiFi, in which the duty cycle of LTE transmission can be adjusted based on the amount of data. In the second approach, a multi-arm bandit learning based coexistence of LTE and WiFi has been developed. The duty cycle of transmission and downlink power are adapted through the exploration and exploitation. This approach improves the aggregated capacity by 33\%, along with cell edge and energy efficiency enhancement. We also investigate the performance of LTE and ZigBee coexistence using smart grid as a scenario. In case of low latency, we summarize the existing works into three domains in the context of 5G networks: core, radio and caching networks. Along with this, fundamental constraints for achieving low latency are identified followed by a general overview of exemplary 5G networks. Besides that, a loop-free, low latency and local-decision based routing protocol is derived in the context of smart grid. This approach ensures low latency and reliable data communication for stationary devices. To address data security in wireless communication, we introduce a geo-location based data encryption, along with node authentication by k-nearest neighbor algorithm. In the second approach, node authentication by the support vector machine, along with public-private key management, is proposed. Both approaches ensure data security without increasing the packet overhead compared to the existing approaches

    Enhancing the bit error rate performance of ultra wideband systems using time-hopping pulse position modulation in multiple access environments

    Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) technology is one of the possible solutions for future short-range indoor data communication with uniquely attractive features inviting major advances in wireless communications, networking, radar, imaging, and positioning systems. A major challenge when designing UWB systems is choosing a suitable modulation technique. Data rate, transceiver complexity, and BER performance of the transmitted signal are all related to the employed modulation scheme. Several classical modulation schemes can be used to create UWB signals, some are more efficient than others. These schemes are namely, Pulse Position Modulation (PPM), Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM), Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK), and On-Off Keying (OOK) are reviewed. In the thesis, the performance of PPM system, combined with Time Hopping Spread Spectrum (THSS) multiple access technique is evaluated in an asynchronous multiple access free space environment. The multiple access interference is first assumed to be a zero mean Gaussian random process to simulate the scenario of a multi user environment. An exact BER calculation is then evaluated based on the characteristic function (CF) method, for Time Hopping-Pulse Position Modulation Ultra Wide Band (TH-PPM UWB) systems with multiple access interference (MAI) in AWGN environment. The resulting analytical expression is then used to assess the accuracy of the MAI Gaussian Approximation (GA) first assumed. The GA is shown to be inaccurate for predicting BERs for medium and large signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values. Furthermore, the analysis of TH-PPM system is further extended to evaluate the influence of changing and optimising some of the system or signal parameters. It can be shown how the system is greatly sensitive to variations in some signal parameters, like the pulse shape, the time-shift parameter associated with PPM, and the pulse length. In addition, the system performance can be greatly improved by optimising other system parameters like the number of pulses per bit, Ns, and the number of time slots per frame, Nh. All these evaluation are addressed through numerical examples. Then, we can say that, by improving signal or system parameters, the BER performance of the system is greatly enhanced. This is achieved without imposing exact complexity to the transceiver and with moderate computational calculations

    Near field sensing and antenna design for wireless body area network

    PhD ThesisWireless body area network (WBAN) has emerged in recent years as a special class of wireless sensor network; hence, WBAN inherits the wireless sensor network challenges of interference by passive objects in indoor environments. However, attaching wireless nodes to a person’s body imposes a unique challenge, presented by continuous changes in the working environment, due to the normal activities of the monitored personnel. Basic activities, like sitting on a metallic chair or standing near a metallic door, drastically change the antenna behaviour when the metallic object is within the antenna near field. Although antenna coupling with the human body has been investigated by many recent studies, the coupling of the WBAN node antenna with other objects within the surrounding environment has not been thoroughly studied. To address the problems above, the thesis investigates the state-of-the art of WBAN, eximanes the influence of metallic object near an antenna through experimental studies and proposes antenna design and their applications for near field environments. This thesis philosophy for the previously mentioned challenge is to examine and improve the WBAN interaction with its surrounding by enabling the WBAN node to detect nearby objects based solely on change in antenna measurements. The thesis studies the interference caused by passive objects on WBAN node antenna and extracts relevant features to sense the object presence within the near field, and proposes new design of WBAN antenna suitable for this purpose. The major contributions of this study can be summarised as follows. First, it observes and defines the changes in the return loss of a narrow band antenna when a metallic object is introduced in its near field. Two methods were proposed to detect the object, based on the refelction coefficient and transmission coefficient of an antenna in free space. Then, the thesis introduces a new antenna design that conforms to the WBAN requirements of size, while achieving very low sensitivity to human body. This was achieved through combining two opposite Vivaldi shapes on one PCB and using a metallic sheet to act as a reflector, which minimised the antenna coupling with the human body and reduced the radiation pattern towards the body. Finally, the proposed antennas were tested on several human body parts with nearby metallic objects, to compare the change in antenna s-parameters due to presence of the human body and presence of the metallic object. Based on the measurements, basic statistical indicators and Principal Component Analysis were proposed to detect object presense and estimate its distance. In conclusion, the thesis successfully shows WBAN antenna’s ability to detect nearby metallic objects through a set of proposed indicators and novel antenna design. The thesis is wrapped up by the suggestion to investigate time domain features and modulated signal for future work in WBAN near field sensing

    Cooperative Radio Communications for Green Smart Environments

    The demand for mobile connectivity is continuously increasing, and by 2020 Mobile and Wireless Communications will serve not only very dense populations of mobile phones and nomadic computers, but also the expected multiplicity of devices and sensors located in machines, vehicles, health systems and city infrastructures. Future Mobile Networks are then faced with many new scenarios and use cases, which will load the networks with different data traffic patterns, in new or shared spectrum bands, creating new specific requirements. This book addresses both the techniques to model, analyse and optimise the radio links and transmission systems in such scenarios, together with the most advanced radio access, resource management and mobile networking technologies.
