    Bayesian robot Programming

    We propose a new method to program robots based on Bayesian inference and learning. The capacities of this programming method are demonstrated through a succession of increasingly complex experiments. Starting from the learning of simple reactive behaviors, we present instances of behavior combinations, sensor fusion, hierarchical behavior composition, situation recognition and temporal sequencing. This series of experiments comprises the steps in the incremental development of a complex robot program. The advantages and drawbacks of this approach are discussed along with these different experiments and summed up as a conclusion. These different robotics programs may be seen as an illustration of probabilistic programming applicable whenever one must deal with problems based on uncertain or incomplete knowledge. The scope of possible applications is obviously much broader than robotics

    New complexity results for parallel identical machine scheduling problems with preemption, release dates and regular criteria

    In this paper, we are interested in parallel identical machine scheduling problems with preemption and release dates in case of a regular criterion to be minimized. We show that solutions having a permutation flow shop structure are dominant if there exists an optimal solution with completion times scheduled in the same order as the release dates, or if there is no release date. We also prove that, for a subclass of these problems, the completion times of all jobs can be ordered in an optimal solution. Using these two results, we provide new results on polynomially solvable problems and hence refine the boundary between P and NP for these problems

    The flow shop scheduling problem is a classical combinatorial problem being studied for years. The focus of this research is to study two variants of the flow shop scheduling problem in order to minimize makespan by scheduling n jobs on m machines. A solution approach is developed for the modified flow shop problem with due dates and release times. This algorithm is an attempt to contribute to the limited literature for the problem. Another tabu search-based solution approach is developed to solve the classical flow shop scheduling problem. This meta-heuristic (called 3XTS) allows an efficient search of the neighboring solutions leading to a fast solution procedure. Several control parameters affecting the quality of the algorithm are experimentally tested, and certain rules are established for different problem instances. The 3XTS is compared to another tabu search method (that seems to be a champion) in terms of solution quality and computation time

    Overview on: sequencing in mixed model flowshop production line with static and dynamic context

    In the present work a literature overview was given on solution techniques considering basic as well as more advanced and consequently more complex arrangements of mixed model flowshops. We first analyzed the occurrence of setup time/cost; existing solution techniques are mainly focused on permutation sequences. Thereafter we discussed objectives resulting in the introduction of variety of methods allowing resequencing of jobs within the line. The possibility of resequencing within the line ranges from 1) offline or intermittent buffers, 2) parallel stations, namely flexible, hybrid or compound flowshops, 3) merging and splitting of parallel lines, 4) re-entrant flowshops, to 5) change job attributes without physically interchanging the position. In continuation the differences in the consideration of static and dynamic demand was studied. Also intermittent setups are possible, depending on the horizon and including the possibility of resequencing, four problem cases were highlighted: static, semi dynamic, nearly dynamic and dynamic case. Finally a general overview was given on existing solution methods, including exact and approximation methods.
