    Optimization of product assignment to assembly lines

    Dissertação de mestrado em Industrial engineering and ManagementThe work presented in this dissertation was developed in an industrial context integrated in the production control and management department of the Bosch Car Multimedia Portugal S.A – Braga automatic insertion. The problem addressed in this dissertation was finding the best distribution of product families to assign in different lines according to the physical and technical constraints of the assembly lines. In the approach of the problem, it was used tools and techniques of the Operational Research discipline through mathematical modeling, in order to analyze complex situation and obtain more efficient solutions to help in the decision-making process. Based on production data, production needs forecasts and assembly line physical availability, models with different sets of constraints and objective functions were created to present solutions that best fit the question and the specific problem of the present production context. Through specific software that suited the problem, the previously created models were solved, and the solutions were analyzed and evaluated to suit the company’s current needs and for possible and feasible implementation of the solutions.O trabalho apresentado nesta dissertação foi desenvolvido em contexto industrial integrado no departamento de planeamento e controlo de produção da área de inserção automática da Bosch Car Multimédia Portugal S.A - Braga. O problema abordado nesta dissertação foi encontrar a melhor distribuição de famílias de produtos a alocar nas diferentes linhas de produção de acordo com as suas restrições físicas e técnicas. Na abordagem do problema recorreu-se a técnicas de Investigação Operacional através de modelação matemática, para analisar situações complexas e obter soluções mais eficientes. Tendo como base dados da produção, previsões de necessidades e disponibilidade física da produção, foram criados modelos com diferentes conjuntos de restrições e funções objetivo por forma a apresentar soluções que melhor se adequassem à pergunta e ao problema específico do contexto produtivo presente. Através da utilização de software, foram resolvidos os modelos criados anteriormente, sendo que as soluções foram analisadas e avaliadas para a adequação às necessidades atuais da empresa e para a sua possível e viável implementação

    Contributions on spectral control for the asymmetrical full bridge multilevel inverter

    Las topologías de circuitos inversores multinivel pueden trabajar a tensiones y potencias mayores que las alcanzadas por convertidores convencionales de dos niveles. Además, la conversión multinivel reduce la distorsión armónica de las variables de salida y en algunos casos, a pesar del aumento de elementos de conmutación, también reduce las pérdidas de conversión al incrementarse el número de niveles. La reducción de distorsión alcanzada por el número de niveles puede aprovecharse para reducir las pérdidas de conmutación disminuyendo la frecuencia de las señales portadoras. Para reducir aún más esta frecuencia sin degradar el espectro, nosotros controlamos las pendientes de las portadoras triangulares. Primero se han desarrollado dos modelos analíticos para predecir el espectro del voltage de salida, dependiendo de: el índice de modulación MA, la razón de distribución de voltaje K de las fuentes de alimentación , y las cuatro pendientes de las portadoras{r1, r2, r3, r4}. El primer modelo considera el Muestreo Natural y se basa en Series Dobles de Fourier (SDF) mientras que el segundo modelo, utiliza la Serie Sencilla de Fourier (SSF) introduciendo el concepto de Muestreo Pseudo-Natural, una aproximación digital de la modulación natural. Ambos modelos son programados en Matlab, verificados con Pspice y validados con un prototipo experimental que contiene un modulador digital implementado con DSP.La concordancia entre las modulaciones natural y pseudo-natural, asi como entre sus respectivos modelos, es aprovechada por un algorítmo genético (AG) donde la THD es la función costo a reducir. Después de varios ensayos y de sintonizar el AG, se genera una matriz que contiene conjuntos de portadoras optimizadas dentro un rango específico de las variables {MA,K} y es probada con un segundo prototipo en lazo cerrado. Un lazo lento digital modifica las portadoras creadas por un dsPIC en modulaciones PWM; estas son demoduladas y sus amplitudes corregidas por un lazo de acción anticipada. Estas portadoras se comparan con una referencia sinusoidal que a su vez es modificada por variables de estado, generando finalmente la modulación multinivel en lazo cerrado. Los resultados finales demuestran la fiabilidad de la reducción de armónicos usando la programación de las pendientes de las portadoras. In addition, multilevel conversion reduces the output variables harmonic distortion and, sometimes, in spite of the devices-count increment, the conversion losses can also decrease by increasing the number of levels. The harmonic distortion reduction achieved by increasing the number of levels, can be used to further reducing the switching losses by decreasing the inverter carrier frequencies. To reduce even more the switching frequency without degrading output spectrum, we control the triangular carrier waveforms slopes. First, to achieve this target, two analytical models have been created in order to predict the inverter output voltage spectrum, depending on diverse parameters: the amplitude modulation index MA, the voltage distribution K of the inverter input sources, and the four carrier slopes {r1, r2, r3, r4}. The first model considers Natural Sampling and is based on Double Fourier Series (DFS) whereas the second model based on Simple Fourier Series (SFS), introduces the concept of Pseudo-Natural Sampling, as a digital approximation of the natural modulation. Both models are programmed in Matlab, verified with Pspice simulations and validated with a first experimental prototype with a DSP digital modulator.The good agreement between natural and pseudo-natural modulations, as well as their respective DFS and SFS models, is exploited by a Genetic Algorithm (GA) application where THD is the cost function to minimize. After testing and properly tuning the GA, a framework matrix containing the optimized carriers set for a specific range of variables {MA,K} is generated and then, tested with a second, closed-loop prototype. A slow digital loop modifies the carrier slopes created by dsPIC microcontroller as PWM modulations, whose amplitude, once demodulated, are affected by a feed-forward loop. These carriers, compared with a sinusoidal reference, state-feedback modified, generate finally the closed-loop multilevel modulation. The final results demonstrates the feasibility of harmonic reduction by means of carrier slopes programming.     A reference architecture for flexibly integrating machine vision within manufacturing

    A reference architecture provides an overall framework that may embrace models, methodologies and mechanisms which can support the lifecycle of their target domain. The work described in this thesis makes a contribution to establishing such a generally applicable reference architecture for supporting the lifecycIe of a new generation of integrated machine vision systems. Contemporary machine vision systems consist of a complex combination of mechanical engineering, the hardware and software of an electronic processor, plus optical, sensory and lighting components. "This thesis is concerned with the structure of the software which characterises the system application. The machine vision systems which are currently used within manufacturing industry are difficult to integrate within the information systems required within modem manufacturing enterprises. They are inflexible in all but the execution of a range of similar operations, and their design and implementation is often such that they are difficult to update in the face of the required change inherent within modem manufacturing. The proposed reference architecture provides an overall framework within which a number of supporting models, design methodologies, and implementation mechanisms can combine to provide support for the rapid creation and maintenance of highly structured machine vision applications. These applications comprise modules which can be considered as building blocks of CIM systems. Their integrated interoperation can be enabled by the emerging infrastructural tools which will be required to underpin the next generation of flexibly integrated manufacturing systems. The work described in this thesis concludes that the issues of machine vision applications and the issues of integration of these applications within manufacturing systems are entirely separate. This separation is reflected in the structure of the thesis. PART B details vision application issues while PAIIT C deals with integration. The criteria for next generation integrated machine vision systems, derived in PART A of the thesis, are extensive. In order to address these criteria and propose a complete architecture, a "thin slice" is taken through the areas of vision application, and integration at the lifecycle stages of design, implementation, runtime and maintenance. The thesis describes the reference architecture, demonstrates its use though a proof of concept implementation and evaluates the support offered by the architecture for easing the problems of software change

    A machine vision based automatic optical inspection system for measuring drilling quality of printed circuit boards

    In this paper, we develop and put into practice an automatic optical inspection (AOI) system based on machine vision to check the holes on a printed circuit board (PCB). We incorporate the hardware and software. For the hardware part, we combine a PC, the three-axis positioning system, a lighting device, and charge-coupled device cameras. For the software part, we utilize image registration, image segmentation, drill numbering, drill contrast, and defect displays to achieve this system. Results indicated that an accuracy of 5 mu m could be achieved in errors of the PCB holes allowing comparisons to be made. This is significant in inspecting the missing, the multi-hole, and the incorrect location of the holes. However, previous work only focuses on one or other feature of the holes. Our research is able to assess multiple features: missing holes, incorrectly located holes, and excessive holes. Equally, our results could be displayed as a bar chart and target plot. This has not been achieved before. These displays help users to analyze the causes of errors and immediately correct the problems. In addition, this AOI system is valuable for checking a large number of holes and finding out the defective ones on a PCB. Meanwhile, we apply a 0.1-mm image resolution, which is better than others used in industry. We set a detecting standard based on 2-mm diameter of circles to diagnose the quality of the holes within 10 s

    Young Researchers Symposium WILGA on Photonics Applications and Web Engineering has been organized since 1998, two times a year. Subject area of the Wilga Symposium are advanced photonic and electronic systems in all aspects: theoretical, design and application, hardware and software, academic, scientific, research, development, commissioning and industrial, but also educational and development of research and technical staff. Each year, during the international Spring edition, the Wilga Symposium is attended by a few hundred young researchers, graduated M.Sc. students, Ph.D. students, young doctors, young research workers from the R&D institutions, universities, innovative firms, etc. Wilga, gathering through years the organization experience, has turned out to be a perfect relevant information exchange platform between young researchers from Poland with participation  of international guests, all active in the research areas of electron and photon technologies, electronics, photonics, telecommunications, automation, robotics and information technology, but also technical physics.     Meta-learning computational intelligence architectures

    In computational intelligence, the term \u27memetic algorithm\u27 has come to be associated with the algorithmic pairing of a global search method with a local search method. In a sociological context, a \u27meme\u27 has been loosely defined as a unit of cultural information, the social analog of genes for individuals. Both of these definitions are inadequate, as \u27memetic algorithm\u27 is too specific, and ultimately a misnomer, as much as a \u27meme\u27 is defined too generally to be of scientific use. In this dissertation the notion of memes and meta-learning is extended from a computational viewpoint and the purpose, definitions, design guidelines and architecture for effective meta-learning are explored. The background and structure of meta-learning architectures is discussed, incorporating viewpoints from psychology, sociology, computational intelligence, and engineering. The benefits and limitations of meme-based learning are demonstrated through two experimental case studies -- Meta-Learning Genetic Programming and Meta- Learning Traveling Salesman Problem Optimization. Additionally, the development and properties of several new algorithms are detailed, inspired by the previous case-studies. With applications ranging from cognitive science to machine learning, meta-learning has the potential to provide much-needed stimulation to the field of computational intelligence by providing a framework for higher order learning --Abstract, page iii
