Resource-efficient strategies for mobile ad-hoc networking
The ubiquity and widespread availability of wireless mobile devices with ever increasing
inter-connectivity (e. g. by means of Bluetooth, WiFi or UWB) have led to new and emerging
next generation mobile communication paradigms, such as the Mobile Ad-hoc NETworks
(MANETs). MANETs are differentiated from traditional mobile systems by their unique properties,
e. g. unpredictable nodal location, unstable topology and multi-hop packet relay. The
success of on-going research in communications involving MANETs has encouraged their applications
in areas with stringent performance requirements such as the e-healthcare, e. g. to
connect them with existing systems to deliver e-healthcare services anytime anywhere. However,
given that the capacity of mobile devices is restricted by their resource constraints (e. g.
computing power, energy supply and bandwidth), a fundamental challenge in MANETs is how
to realize the crucial performance/Quality of Service (QoS) expectations of communications in
a network of high dynamism without overusing the limited resources.
A variety of networking technologies (e. g. routing, mobility estimation and connectivity
prediction) have been developed to overcome the topological instability and unpredictability
and to enable communications in MANETs with satisfactory performance or QoS. However,
these technologies often feature a high consumption of power and/or bandwidth, which makes
them unsuitable for resource constrained handheld or embedded mobile devices. In particular,
existing strategies of routing and mobility characterization are shown to achieve fairly
good performance but at the expense of excessive traffic overhead or energy consumption. For
instance, existing hybrid routing protocols in dense MANETs are based in two-dimensional organizations
that produce heavy proactive traffic. In sparse MANETs, existing packet delivery
strategy often replicates too many copies of a packet for a QoS target. In addition, existing
tools for measuring nodal mobility are based on either the GPS or GPS-free positioning systems,
which incur intensive communications/computations that are costly for battery-powered
terminals. There is a need to develop economical networking strategies (in terms of resource
utilization) in delivering the desired performance/soft QoS targets.
The main goal of this project is to develop new networking strategies (in particular, for
routing and mobility characterization) that are efficient in terms of resource consumptions while
being effective in realizing performance expectations for communication services (e. g. in the
scenario of e-healthcare emergency) with critical QoS requirements in resource-constrained
MANETs.
The main contributions of the thesis are threefold:
(1) In order to tackle the inefficient bandwidth utilization of hybrid service/routing discovery
in dense MANETs, a novel "track-based" scheme is developed. The scheme deploys
a one-dimensional track-like structure for hybrid routing and service discovery. In comparison
with existing hybrid routing/service discovery protocols that are based on two-dimensional
structures, the track-based scheme is more efficient in terms of traffic overhead (e. g. about 60%
less in low mobility scenarios as shown in Fig. 3.4). Due to the way "provocative tracks" are
established, the scheme has also the capability to adapt to the network traffic and mobility for
a better performance.
(2) To minimize the resource utilization of packet delivery in sparse MANETs where wireless
links are intermittently connected, a store-and-forward based scheme, "adaptive multicopy
routing", was developed for packet delivery in sparse mobile ad-hoc networks. Instead
of relying on the source to control the delivery overhead as in the conventional multi-copy
protocols, the scheme allows each intermediate node to independently decide whether to forward
a packet according to the soft QoS target and local network conditions. Therefore, the
scheme can adapt to varying networking situations that cannot be anticipated in conventional
source-defined strategies and deliver packets for a specific QoS targets using minimum traffic
overhead.

(3) The important issue of mobility measurement that imposes heavy communication/computation
burdens on a mobile is addressed with a set of resource-efficient "GPS-free" soluti ons,
which provide mobility characterization with minimal resource utilization for ranging and signalling
by making use of the information of the time-varying ranges between neighbouring
mobile nodes (or groups of mobile nodes). The range-based solutions for mobility characterization
consist of a new mobility metric for network-wide performance measurement, two
velocity estimators for approximating the inter-node relative speeds, and a new scheme for
characterizing the nodal mobility. The new metric and its variants are capable of capturing the
mobility of a network as well as predicting the performance. The velocity estimators are used to
measure the speed and orientation of a mobile relative to its neighbours, given the presence of a
departing node. Based on the velocity estimators, the new scheme for mobility characterization
is capable of characterizing the mobility of a node that are associated with topological stability,
i. e. the node's speeds, orientations relative to its neighbouring nodes and its past epoch time.

A good mobility model can help researchers to study the user mobility issues in many areas (wireless LAN context switching). In this paper, we propose a new framework for constructing a realistic mobility model incorporating decision and operation models. We use the revised social force model to simulate the realistic mobile users’ movements and artificial neural networks (ANN) models to create a decision model within the proposed mobility framework
Probabilistic approaches to the design of wireless ad hoc and sensor networks
The emerging wireless technologies has made ubiquitous wireless access a reality and enabled wireless systems to support a large variety of applications. Since the wireless self-configuring networks do not require infrastructure and promise greater flexibility and better coverage, wireless ad hoc and sensor networks have been under intensive research. It is believed that wireless ad hoc and sensor networks can become as important as the Internet. Just as the Internet allows access to digital information anywhere, ad hoc and sensor networks will provide remote interaction with the physical world.
Dynamics of the object distribution is one of the most important features of the wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. This dissertation deals with several interesting estimation and optimization problems on the dynamical features of ad hoc and sensor networks. Many demands in application, such as reliability, power efficiency and sensor deployment, of wireless ad hoc and sensor network can be improved by mobility estimation and/or prediction. In this dissertation, we study several random mobility models, present a mobility prediction methodology, which relies on the analysis of the moving patterns of the mobile objects. Through estimating the future movement of objects and analyzing the tradeoff between the estimation cost and the quality of reliability, the optimization of tracking interval for sensor networks is presented. Based on the observation on the location and movement of objects, an optimal sensor placement algorithm is proposed by adaptively learn the dynamical object distribution. Moreover, dynamical boundary of mass objects monitored in a sensor network can be estimated based on the unsupervised learning of the distribution density of objects.
In order to provide an accurate estimation of mobile objects, we first study several popular mobility models. Based on these models, we present some mobility prediction algorithms accordingly, which are capable of predicting the moving trajectory of objects in the future. In wireless self-configuring networks, an accurate estimation algorithm allows for improving the link reliability, power efficiency, reducing the traffic delay and optimizing the sensor deployment. The effects of estimation accuracy on the reliability and the power consumption have been studied and analyzed. A new methodology is proposed to optimize the reliability and power efficiency by balancing the trade-off between the quality of performance and estimation cost. By estimating and predicting the mass objects\u27 location and movement, the proposed sensor placement algorithm demonstrates a siguificant improvement on the detection of mass objects with nearmaximal detection accuracy. Quantitative analysis on the effects of mobility estimation and prediction on the accuracy of detection by sensor networks can be conducted with recursive EM algorithms. The future work includes the deployment of the proposed concepts and algorithms into real-world ad hoc and sensor networks
Self-organizing Network Optimization via Placement of Additional Nodes

Desasters oder einer Katastrophe können die terrestrischen Elementen der
Infrastruktur eines Kommunikationsnetzwerks beschädigt oder komplett
zerstört werden. Dennoch spielen verfügbare Kommunikationsnetze eine sehr
wichtige Rolle während der Rettungsmaßnahmen, besonders für die
Koordinierung der Rettungstruppen und für die Kommunikation zwischen ihren
Mitgliedern. Ein solcher Service kann durch ein mobiles Ad-Hoc-Netzwerk
(MANET) zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Ein typisches Problem der MANETs
ist Netzwerkpartitionierung, welche zur Isolation von verschiedenen
Knotengruppen führt. Eine mögliche Lösung dieses Problems ist die
Positionierung von zusätzlichen Knoten, welche die Verbindung zwischen den
isolierten Partitionen wiederherstellen können. Hauptziele dieser Arbeit
sind die Recherche und die Entwicklung von Algorithmen und Methoden zur
Positionierung der zusätzlichen Knoten. Der Fokus der Recherche liegt auf
Untersuchung der verteilten Algorithmen zur Bestimmung der Positionen für
die zusätzlichen Knoten. Die verteilten Algorithmen benutzen nur die
Information, welche in einer lokalen Umgebung eines Knotens verfügbar ist,
und dadurch entsteht ein selbstorganisierendes System. Jedoch wird das
gesamte Netzwerk hier vor allem innerhalb eines ganz speziellen Szenarios -
Katastrophenszenario - betrachtet. In einer solchen Situation kann die
Information über die Topologie des zu reparierenden Netzwerks im Voraus
erfasst werden und soll, natürlich, für die Wiederherstellung mitbenutzt
werden. Dank der eventuell verfügbaren zusätzlichen Information können
die Positionen für die zusätzlichen Knoten genauer ermittelt werden. Die
Arbeit umfasst eine Beschreibung, Implementierungsdetails und eine
Evaluierung eines selbstorganisierendes Systems, welche die
Netzwerkwiederherstellung in beiden Szenarien ermöglicht.The main research area of the International Graduate School on Mobile

communication in disaster scenarios. Due to a disaster or an accident, the
network infrastructure can be damaged or even completely destroyed.
However, available communication networks play a vital role during the
rescue activities especially for the coordination of the rescue teams and
for the communication between their members. Such a communication service
can be provided by a Mobile Ad-Hoc Network (MANET). One of the typical
problems of a MANET is network partitioning, when separate groups of nodes
become isolated from each other. One possible solution for this problem is
the placement of additional nodes in order to reconstruct the communication
links between isolated network partitions. The primary goal of this work is
the research and development of algorithms and methods for the placement of
additional nodes. The focus of this research lies on the investigation of
distributed algorithms for the placement of additional nodes, which use
only the information from the nodes’ local environment and thus form a
self-organizing system. However, during the usage specifics of the system
in a disaster scenario, global information about the topology of the
network to be recovered can be known or collected in advance. In this case,
it is of course reasonable to use this information in order to calculate
the placement positions more precisely. The work provides the description,
the implementation details and the evaluation of a self-organizing system
which is able to recover from network partitioning in both situations
Proximity as a Service via Cellular Network-Assisted Mobile Device-to-Device
PhD ThesisThe research progress of communication has brought a lot of novel technologies to meet the multi-dimensional demands such as pervasive connection, low delay and high bandwidth. Device-to-Device (D2D) communication is a way to no longer treat the User Equipment (UEs) as a terminal, but rather as a part of the network for service provisioning. This thesis decouples UEs into service providers (helpers) and service requesters. By collaboration among proximal devices, with the coordination of cellular networks, some local tasks can be achieved, such as coverage extension, computation o oading, mobile crowdsourcing and mobile crowdsensing. This thesis proposes a generic framework Proximity as a Service (PaaS) for increasing the coverage with demands of service continuity. As one of the use cases, the optimal helper selection algorithm of PaaS for increasing the service coverage with demands of service continuity is called ContAct based Proximity (CAP). Mainly, fruitful contact information (e.g., contact duration, frequency, and interval) is captured, and is used to handle ubiquitous proximal services through the optimal selection of helpers. The nature of PaaS is evaluated under the Helsinki city scenario, with movement model of Points Of Interest (POI) and with critical factors in uencing the service demands (e.g., success ratio, disruption duration and frequency). Simulation results show the advantage of CAP, in both success ratio and continuity of the service (outputs). Based on this perspective, metrics such as service success ratio and continuity as a service evaluation of the PaaS are evaluated using the statistical theory of the Design Of Experiments (DOE). DOE is used as there are many dimensions to the state space (access tolerance, selected helper number, helper access limit, and transmit range) that can in uence the results. A key contribution of this work is that it brings rigorous statistical experiment design methods into the research into mobile computing. Results further reveal the influence of four factors (inputs), e.g., service tolerance, number of helpers allocated, the number of concurrent devices supported by each helper and transmit range. Based on this perspective, metrics such as service success ratio and continuity are evaluated using DOE. The results show that transmit range is the most dominant factor. The number of selected helpers is the second most dominant factor. Since di erent factors have di erent regression levels, a uni ed 4 level full factorial experiment and a cubic multiple regression analysis have been carried out. All the interactions and the corresponding coe cients have been found. This work is the rst one to evaluate LTE-Direct and WiFi-Direct in an opportunistic proximity service. The contribution of the results for industry is to guide how many users need to cooperate to enable mobile computing and for academia. This reveals the facts that: 1, in some cases, the improvement of spectrum e ciency brought by D2D is not important; 2, nodal density and the resources used in D2D air-interfaces are important in the eld of mobile computing. DESIGN OF EFFICIENT IN-NETWORK DATA PROCESSING AND DISSEMINATION FOR VANETS
By providing vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure wireless communications, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), also known as the “networks on wheels”, can greatly enhance traffic safety, traffic efficiency and driving experience for intelligent transportation system (ITS). However, the unique features of VANETs, such as high mobility and uneven distribution of vehicular nodes, impose critical challenges of high efficiency and reliability for the implementation of VANETs. This dissertation is motivated by the great application potentials of VANETs in the design of efficient in-network data processing and dissemination. Considering the significance of message aggregation, data dissemination and data collection, this dissertation research targets at enhancing the traffic safety and traffic efficiency, as well as developing novel commercial applications, based on VANETs, following four aspects: 1) accurate and efficient message aggregation to detect on-road safety relevant events, 2) reliable data dissemination to reliably notify remote vehicles, 3) efficient and reliable spatial data collection from vehicular sensors, and 4) novel promising applications to exploit the commercial potentials of VANETs.
Specifically, to enable cooperative detection of safety relevant events on the roads, the structure-less message aggregation (SLMA) scheme is proposed to improve communication efficiency and message accuracy. The scheme of relative position based message dissemination (RPB-MD) is proposed to reliably and efficiently disseminate messages to all intended vehicles in the zone-of-relevance in varying traffic density. Due to numerous vehicular sensor data available based on VANETs, the scheme of compressive sampling based data collection (CS-DC) is proposed to efficiently collect the spatial relevance data in a large scale, especially in the dense traffic. In addition, with novel and efficient solutions proposed for the application specific issues of data dissemination and data collection, several appealing value-added applications for VANETs are developed to exploit the commercial potentials of VANETs, namely general purpose automatic survey (GPAS), VANET-based ambient ad dissemination (VAAD) and VANET based vehicle performance monitoring and analysis (VehicleView).
Thus, by improving the efficiency and reliability in in-network data processing and dissemination, including message aggregation, data dissemination and data collection, together with the development of novel promising applications, this dissertation will help push VANETs further to the stage of massive deployment
VANET-based optimization of infotainment and traffic efficiency vehicular services
The design, standardization and future deployment of vehicular communications systems have been driven so far by safety applications. There are two more aspects of the vehicular networking that have increased their importance in the last years: infotainment and traffic efficiency, as they can improve drivers’ experience, making vehicular communications systems more attractive to end-users. In this thesis we propose optimization mechanisms for both types of vehicular services. Infotainment services are related to the provision of classic IP applications, like browsing, reading e-mail or using social networks. Traffic efficiency services are those accessing new capabilities to the car-navigation systems, aiming at optimizing the usage of road infrastructures, reducing travel times and therefore minimizing the ecological footprint. Bringing infotainment services to the vehicular environment requires to comply with standard protocols and mechanisms that allow heterogeneous networks to be interconnected in the Internet. There are three main functionalities that have to be provided: i) address autoconfiguration, ii) efficient routing and iii) mobility management. Regarding infotainment services, this thesis proposes mechanisms tackling the abovenamed aspects: an overhearing technique to improve an already standardized address autoconfiguration protocol; a tree-based routing algorithm especially tailored for vehicleto- Internet communications and an optimized mobility management approach for vehicular environments. Regarding traffic efficiency, this thesis proposes two algorithms that make use of vehicular communication techniques to monitor and forecast short-term traffic conditions. We first improved our knowledge on drivers’ behavior by analyzing real vehicular data traces, and proposes a mixture model for the vehicles interarrival time. This outcome was used for validating the proposed infotainment optimization as well. All the algorithms and analytical models described in this thesis have been validated by simulations and/or implementations using standard hardware. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------El diseño, normalización y futuro despliegue de los sistemas de comunicación vehiculares han sido principalmente impulsados hasta el momento por las aplicaciones de seguridad vial. Hay dos aspectos adicionales de las redes vehiculares que han visto crecer su relevancia en los últimos años: los servicios de Infotainment y los de eficiencia del tráfico. Estos servicios pueden mejorar la experiencia de los conductores y hacer que los sistemas de comunicación vehiculares resulten más atractivos para los usuarios finales. En esta tesis, se proponen mecanismos de optimización para ambos tipos de servicios vehiculares. Los servicios de Infotainment están relacionados con la provisión de las clásicas aplicaciones IP tales como, navegar, acceder al correo electrónico, o a las redes sociales. Los servicios de eficiencia de tráfico permiten añadir nuevas funcionalidades a los sistemas de navegación con los objetivos de: optimizar el uso de las infraestructuras viarias, reducir los tiempos de viaje y consecuentemente, minimizar el impacto ambiental. Acceder a los servicios de Infotainment desde redes vehiculares conlleva cumplir con los protocolos y mecanismos estandarizados que permiten la interconexión de redes heterogéneas a Internet. Hay tres funcionalidades principales que tienen que ser proporcionadas: configuración automática de direcciones, encaminamiento eficaz y gestión de la movilidad. Esta tesis propone mecanismos para hacer frente a los tres aspectos mencionados: una técnica basada en overhearing que mejora un protocolo de configuración automática de direcciones ya estandarizado, un algoritmo de encaminamiento basado en árboles especialmente diseñado para las comunicaciones desde el vehículo a Internet y, un algoritmo de gestión de la movilidad optimizado para entornos vehiculares. En cuanto a los servicios de eficiencia de tráfico, esta tesis propone dos algoritmos que utilizando las técnicas de comunicación vehículo a vehículo permiten monitorizar y pronosticar a corto plazo las condiciones en el tráfico, como es el caso de posibles atascos.
