    Indoor localisation by using wireless sensor nodes

    This study is devoted to investigating and developing WSN based localisation approaches with high position accuracies indoors. The study initially summarises the design and implementation of localisation systems and WSN architecture together with the characteristics of LQI and RSSI values. A fingerprint localisation approach is utilised for indoor positioning applications. A k-nearest neighbourhood algorithm (k-NN) is deployed, using Euclidean distances between the fingerprint database and the object fingerprints, to estimate unknown object positions. Weighted LQI and RSSI values are calculated and the k-NN algorithm with different weights is utilised to improve the position detection accuracy. Different weight functions are investigated with the fingerprint localisation technique. A novel weight function which produced the maximum position accuracy is determined and employed in calculations. The study covered designing and developing the centroid localisation (CL) and weighted centroid localisation (WCL) approaches by using LQI values. A reference node localisation approach is proposed. A star topology of reference nodes are to be utilized and a 3-NN algorithm is employed to determine the nearest reference nodes to the object location. The closest reference nodes are employed to each nearest reference nodes and the object locations are calculated by using the differences between the closest and nearest reference nodes. A neighbourhood weighted localisation approach is proposed between the nearest reference nodes in star topology. Weights between nearest reference nodes are calculated by using Euclidean and physical distances. The physical distances between the object and the nearest reference nodes are calculated and the trigonometric techniques are employed to derive the object coordinates. An environmentally adaptive centroid localisation approach is proposed.Weighted standard deviation (STD) techniques are employed adaptively to estimate the unknown object positions. WSNs with minimum RSSI mean values are considered as reference nodes across the sensing area. The object localisation is carried out in two phases with respect to these reference nodes. Calculated object coordinates are later translated into the universal coordinate system to determine the actual object coordinates. Virtual fingerprint localisation technique is introduced to determine the object locations by using virtual fingerprint database. A physical fingerprint database is organised in the form of virtual database by using LQI distribution functions. Virtual database elements are generated among the physical database elements with linear and exponential distribution functions between the fingerprint points. Localisation procedures are repeated with virtual database and localisation accuracies are improved compared to the basic fingerprint approach. In order to reduce the computation time and effort, segmentation of the sensing area is introduced. Static and dynamic segmentation techniques are deployed. Segments are defined by RSS ranges and the unknown object is localised in one of these segments. Fingerprint techniques are applied only in the relevant segment to find the object location. Finally, graphical user interfaces (GUI) are utilised with application program interfaces (API), in all calculations to visualise unknown object locations indoors

    Data Analysis and Memory Methods for RSS Bluetooth Low Energy Indoor Positioning

    The thesis aims at finding a feasible solution to Bluetooth low energy indoor positioning (BLE-IP) including comprehensive data analysis of the received signal strength indication (RSSI) values. The data analysis of RSSI values was done to understand different factors influencing the RSSI values so as to gain better understanding of data generating process and to improve the data model. The positioning task is accomplished using a methodology called \textit{fingerprinting}. The fingerprinting based positioning involves two phases namely \textit{calibration phase} and \textit{localization phase}. The localization phase utilises the memory methods for positioning. In this thesis, we have used \textit{Gaussian process} for generation of radio maps and for localization we focus on memory methods: \textit{particle filters} and \textit{unscented Kalman filters}. The Gaussian process radio map is used as the measurement model in the Bayesian filtering context. The optimal fingerprinting phase parameters were determined and the filtering methods were evaluated in terms root mean square error

    Estimating Movement from Mobile Telephony Data

    Mobile enabled devices are ubiquitous in modern society. The information gathered by their normal service operations has become one of the primary data sources used in the understanding of human mobility, social connection and information transfer. This thesis investigates techniques that can extract useful information from anonymised call detail records (CDR). CDR consist of mobile subscriber data related to people in connection with the network operators, the nature of their communication activity (voice, SMS, data, etc.), duration of the activity and starting time of the activity and servicing cell identification numbers of both the sender and the receiver when available. The main contributions of the research are a methodology for distance measurements which enables the identification of mobile subscriber travel paths and a methodology for population density estimation based on significant mobile subscriber regions of interest. In addition, insights are given into how a mobile network operator may use geographically located subscriber data to create new revenue streams and improved network performance. A range of novel algorithms and techniques underpin the development of these methodologies. These include, among others, techniques for CDR feature extraction, data visualisation and CDR data cleansing. The primary data source used in this body of work was the CDR of Meteor, a mobile network operator in the Republic of Ireland. The Meteor network under investigation has just over 1 million customers, which represents approximately a quarter of the country’s 4.6 million inhabitants, and operates using both 2G and 3G cellular telephony technologies. Results show that the steady state vector analysis of modified Markov chain mobility models can return population density estimates comparable to population estimates obtained through a census. Evaluated using a test dataset, results of travel path identification showed that developed distance measurements achieved greater accuracy when classifying the routes CDR journey trajectories took compared to traditional trajectory distance measurements. Results from subscriber segmentation indicate that subscribers who have perceived similar relationships to geographical features can be grouped based on weighted steady state mobility vectors. Overall, this thesis proposes novel algorithms and techniques for the estimation of movement from mobile telephony data addressing practical issues related to sampling, privacy and spatial uncertainty

    Automotive applications of high precision GNSS

    This thesis aims to show that Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) positioning can play a significant role in the positioning systems of future automotive applications. This is through the adoption of state-of-the-art GNSS positioning technology and techniques, and the exploitation of the rapidly developing vehicle-to-vehicle concept. The merging together of these two developments creates greater performance than can be achieved separately. The original contribution of this thesis comes from this combination: Through the introduction of the Pseudo-VRS concept. Pseudo-VRS uses the princples of Network Real Time Kinematic (N-RTK) positioning to share GNSS information between vehicles, which enables absolute vehicle positioning. Pseudo-VRS is shown to improve the performance of high precision GNSS positioning for road vehicles, through the increased availability of GNSS correction messages and the rapid resolution of the N-RTK fixed solution. Positioning systems in the automotive sector are dominated by satellite-based solutions provided by GNSS. This has been the case since May 2001, when the United States Department of Defense switched off Selective Availability, enabling significantly improved positioning performance for civilian users. The average person most frequently encounters GNSS when using electronic personal navigation devices. The Sat Nav or GPS Navigator is ubiquitous in modern societies, where versions can be found on nomadic devices such as smartphones and dedicated personal navigation devices, or built in to the dashboards of vehicles. Such devices have been hugely successful due to their intrinsic ability to provide position information anywhere in the world with an accuracy of approximately 10 metres, which has proved ideal for general navigation applications. There are a few well known limitations of GNSS positioning, including anecdotal evidence of incorrect navigation advice for personal navigation devices, but these are minor compared to the overall positioning performance. Through steady development of GNSS positioning devices, including the integration of other low cost sensors (for instance, wheel speed or odometer sensors in vehicles), and the development of robust map matching algorithms, the performance of these devices for navigation applications is truly incredible. However, when tested for advanced automotive applications, the performance of GNSS positioning devices is found to be inadequate. In particular, in the most advanced fields of research such as autonomous vehicle technology, GNSS positioning devices are relegated to a secondary role, or often not used at all. They are replaced by terrestrial sensors that provide greater situational awareness, such as radar and lidar. This is due to the high performance demand of such applications, including high positioning accuracy (sub-decimetre), high availability and continuity of solutions (100%), and high integrity of the position information. Low-cost GNSS receivers generally do not meet such requirements. This could be considered an enormous oversight, as modern GNSS positioning technology and techniques have significantly improved satellite-based positioning performance. Other non-GNSS techniques also have their limitations that GNSS devices can minimise or eliminate. For instance, systems that rely on situational awareness require accurate digital maps of their surroundings as a reference. GNSS positioning can help to gather this data, provide an input, and act as a fail-safe in the event of digital map errors. It is apparent that in order to deliver advanced automotive applications - such as semi- or fully-autonomous vehicles - there must be an element of absolute positioning capability. Positioning systems will work alongside situational awareness systems to enable the autonomous vehicles to navigate through the real world. A strong candidate for the positioning system is GNSS positioning. This thesis builds on work already started by researchers at the University of Nottingham, to show that N-RTK positioning is one such technique. N-RTK can provide sub-decimetre accuracy absolute positioning solutions, with high availability, continuity, and integrity. A key component of N-RTK is the availability of real-time GNSS correction data. This is typically delivered to the GNSS receiver via mobile internet (for a roving receiver). This can be a significant limitation, as it relies on the performance of the mobile communications network, which can suffer from performance degradation during dynamic operation. Mobile communications systems are expected to improve significantly over the next few years, as consumers demand faster download speeds and wider availability. Mobile communications coverage already covers a high percentage of the population, but this does not translate into a high percentage of a country's geography. Pockets of poor coverage, often referred to as notspots, are widespread. Many of these notspots include the transportation infrastructure. The vehicle-to-vehicle concept has made significant forward steps in the last few years. Traditionally promoted as a key component of future automotive safety applications, it is now driven primarily by increased demand for in-vehicle infotainment. The concept, which shares similarities with the Internet of Things and Mobile Ad-hoc Networks, relies on communication between road vehicles and other road agents (such as pedestrians and road infrastructure). N-RTK positioning can take advantage of this communication link to minimise its own communications-related limitations. Sharing GNSS information between local GNSS receivers enables better performance of GNSS positioning, based on the principles of differential GNSS and N-RTK positioning techniques. This advanced concept is introduced and tested in this thesis. The Pseudo VRS concept follows the protocols and format of sharing GNSS data used in N-RTK positioning. The technique utilises the latest GNSS receiver design, including multiple frequency measurements and high quality antennas

    Exploring Audio Sensing in Detecting Social Interactions Using Smartphone Devices

    In recent years, the fast proliferation of smartphones devices has provided powerful and portable methodologies for integrating sensing systems which can run continuously and provide feedback in real-time. The mobile crowd-sensing of human behaviour is an emerging computing paradigm that offers a challenge of sensing everyday social interactions performed by people who carry smartphone devices upon themselves. Typical smartphone sensors and the mobile crowd-sensing paradigm compose a process where the sensors present, such as the microphone, are used to infer social relationships between people in diverse social settings, where environmental factors can be dynamic and the infrastructure of buildings can vary. The typical approaches in detecting social interactions between people consider the use of co-location as a proxy for real-world interactions. Such approaches can under-perform in challenging situations where multiple social interactions can occur within close proximity to each other, for example when people are in a queue at the supermarket but not a part of the same social interaction. Other approaches involve a limitation where all participants of a social interaction must carry a smartphone device with themselves at all times and each smartphone must have the sensing app installed. The problem here is the feasibility of the sensing system, which relies heavily on each participant's smartphone acting as nodes within a social graph, connected together with weighted edges of proximity between the devices; when users uninstall the app or disable background sensing, the system is unable to accurately determine the correct number of participants. In this thesis, we present two novel approaches to detecting co-located social interac- tions using smartphones. The first relies on the use of WiFi signals and audio signals to distinguish social groups interacting within a few meters from each other with 88% precision. We orchestrated preliminary experiments using WiFi as a proxy for co-location between people who are socially interacting. Initial results showed that in more challenging scenarios, WiFi is not accurate enough to determine if people are socially interacting within the same social group. We then made use of audio as a second modality to capture the sound patterns of conversations to identify and segment social groups within close proximity to each other. Through a range of real-world experiments (social interactions in meeting scenarios, coffee shop scenarios, conference scenarios), we demonstrate a technique that utilises WiFi fingerprinting, along with sound fingerprinting to identify these social groups. We built a system which performs well, and then optimized the power consumption and improved the performance to 88% precision in the most challenging scenarios using duty cycling and data averaging techniques. The second approach explores the feasibility of detecting social interactions without the need of all social contacts to carry a social sensing device. This work explores the use of supervised and unsupervised Deep Learning techniques before concluding on the use of an Autoencoder model to perform a Speaker Identification task. We demonstrate how machine learning can be used with the audio data collected from a singular device as a speaker identification framework. Speech from people is used as the input to our Autoencoder model and then classified against a list of "social contacts" to determine if the user has spoken a person before or not. By doing this, the system can count the number of social contacts belonging to the user, and develop a database of common social contacts. Through the use 100 randomly-generated social conversations and the use of state-of-the-art Deep Learning techniques, we demonstrate how this system can accurately distinguish new and existing speakers from a data set of voices, to count the number of daily social interactions a user encounters with a precision of 75%. We then optimize the model using Hyperparameter Optimization to ensure that the model is most optimal for the task.
