Enterprise-specific ontology-driven process modelling
Different process models are created within an enterprise by different modelers who use different enterprise terms. This hinders model interoperability and integration. A possible solution is formalizing the vocabulary used within the enterprise in an ontology and put this ontology as bases for constructing process models. Given that an enterprise is an evolving entity, the ontology needs to evolve to properly reflect the domain of the enterprise. This paper proposes an enterprise-specific ontology-driven process modelling method which tackles the two aforementioned issues by assisting the modeller in creating process models using terminology from the ontology and simultaneously supporting ontology enrichment with feedback from those models. When the modeller creates a model, matching mechanisms incorporated in the method are working together to suggest a list of ontological concepts that have a high potential to be useful for a particular modelling element. When the model is created, its quality is first evaluated from different perspectives to make sure that it can be used within the enterprise, and second to discover whether its feedback can be useful for the ontology. When the feedback is extracted, the proposed method incorporates guidelines on how to use this feedback

A Simulation Model Articulation of the REA Ontology
This paper demonstrates how the REA enterprise ontology can be used to construct simulation models for business processes, value chains and collaboration spaces in supply chains. These models support various high-level and operational management simulation applications, e.g. the analysis of enterprise sustainability and day-to-day planning. First, the basic constructs of the REA ontology and the ExSpect modelling language for simulation are introduced. Second, collaboration space, value chain and business process models and their conceptual dependencies are shown, using the ExSpect language. A layered framework for pattern-based ontology evolution
The challenge of ontology-driven modelling of information
components is well known in both academia and industry. In this paper, we present a novel approach to deal with customisation and abstraction of ontology-based model evolution. As a result of an empirical study, we identify a layered change operator framework based on the granularity,
domain-specificity and abstraction of changes. The implementation of the operator framework is supported through layered change logs. Layered change logs capture the objective of ontology changes at a higher level of granularity and support a comprehensive understanding of ontology evolution. The layered change logs are formalised using a graph-based approach. We identify the recurrent ontology change patterns from an ontology change log for their reuse. The identified patterns facilitate optimizing and improving the definition of domain-specific change patterns
Past, present and future of information and knowledge sharing in the construction industry: Towards semantic service-based e-construction
The paper reviews product data technology initiatives in the construction sector and provides a synthesis of related ICT industry needs. A comparison between (a) the data centric characteristics of Product Data Technology (PDT) and (b) ontology with a focus on semantics, is given, highlighting the pros and cons of each approach. The paper advocates the migration from data-centric application integration to ontology-based business process support, and proposes inter-enterprise collaboration architectures and frameworks based on semantic services, underpinned by ontology-based knowledge structures. The paper discusses the main reasons behind the low industry take up of product data technology, and proposes a preliminary roadmap for the wide industry diffusion of the proposed approach. A Product Oriented Modelling Concept: Holons for systems synchronisation and interoperability
Nowadays, enterprises are confronted to growing needs for traceability,
product genealogy and product life cycle management. To meet those needs, the
enterprise and applications in the enterprise environment have to manage flows
of information that relate to flows of material and that are managed in shop
floor level. Nevertheless, throughout product lifecycle coordination needs to
be established between reality in the physical world (physical view) and the
virtual world handled by manufacturing information systems (informational
view). This paper presents the "Holon" modelling concept as a means for the
synchronisation of both physical view and informational views. Afterwards, we
show how the concept of holon can play a major role in ensuring
interoperability in the enterprise context

Service engineering and service-oriented architecture as an integration and platform technology is a recent approach to software systems integration. Quality aspects
ranging from interoperability to maintainability to performance are of central importance for the integration of heterogeneous, distributed service-based systems. Architecture models can substantially influence quality attributes of the implemented software systems. Besides the benefits of explicit architectures on maintainability and reuse, architectural constraints such as styles, reference architectures and architectural patterns can influence observable software properties such as performance. Empirical performance evaluation is a process of measuring and evaluating the performance of implemented software.
