    Developing successful intelligence : a curriculum for employability in changing markets for graduate labour

    A key pedagogical challenge for undergraduate educators in integrating work and learning in the curriculum, is the identification of appropriate conceptual constructs to facilitate student learning and development. State and employer organisations have articulated a discourse of 'key skills' which has been adopted by universities, and yoked to innovations in pedagogy for employability. We propose the construct 'successful intelligence' to enhance pedagogy for employability. We show how it might be introduced to the undergraduate business curriculum, using a case study of the evolution of an undergraduate management development programme to ground our thinking in practice. We also use student perceptions of teaching, learning, and career planning to distinguish what students regard as real and relevant in their studies, contributing to employability

    Evaluation of the Doodle Families Literacy Programme Pilot

    The Doodle Families Literacy Programme was a pilot programme that was delivered in three DEIS Band 1 primary schools in Limerick during the period of April to June 2015 for First Class children and their parents.Doodle Families was originally designed as an afterschool programme, but the pilot schools delivered it during the school day or bridging the school day and afterschool time. Doodle Families was delivered in two four week blocks, with families participating in one session per week.The pilot programme objectives were:* To pilot Doodle Families as a follow up to Doodle Den;* To train a panel of facilitators from three pilot schools and local services to deliver the programme.* To verify programme content, implementation issues and training needs to support the replication of Doodle Families.The aim of the evaluation of Doodle Families was to assess the implementation of the programme, how it was delivered and how those involved in the delivery felt about the programme, including school staff, parents, children, school principals and external organisations

    Electronic information resource use: Implications for teaching and library staff

    Traditionally, guidance from teaching staff to students on the use of information sources has taken the form of reading lists containing a mix of books and journal articles, and the assumption is that information specialists within the library will provide whatever additional help is needed to access these resources. Given the rapidly increasing availability of electronic sources of information, and changes in the learning and teaching environment, such an approach can no longer be regarded as appropriate. This paper addresses the issue of the best way of helping students make effective use of electronic information resources, thereby developing their information‐gathering skills. Reference is made to the lessons learned from undertaking a small action research project in this field. Consideration is also given to a number of broader, more contextual issues, such as the ongoing shift towards more independent learning by students and changing relationships between teaching staff and information specialists. We conclude that more research is urgently needed if ways are to be found of ensuring that students maximize the potential of electronic information resources, and argue that there should be greater collaboration between teaching staff and information specialists, and that their roles and responsibilities in providing appropriate support and in assessing the information‐gathering skills of students need to be redefined

    Between conformity and contestation: South Asian immigrant women negotiating soft skill training in Canada

    In the current Canadian neoliberal labour market, work-related learning and training are considered key strategies for developing workers’ economic productivity as well as expediting their integration to the labour market. An important aspect of such training and learning now consists of soft skills. Yet some scholars are ambivalent about the nature of such soft skill training as their curriculum are often suffused with cultural and racial values geared towards assimilating immigrants of colour to the dominant and normative national culture of the country. This paper further problematizes soft skill training by examining the training/learning experiences of highly educated South Asian women trying to enter the Canadian labour market after immigration. In particular, it highlights these women’s engagement with such soft skill training and their negotiation processes, thereby analyzing their agency in the context of work-related learning

    Development and evaluation of an engaging web-based content sequencing system for learning basic programming

    Java basic programming is one of programming languages that is offered to students as a compulsory course for Information Technology or Computer Science programs. This subject requires students to learn skills and techniques of programming rather than theoretical concepts. Usually, students have problems to capture and understand the content of the course which resulted in low performance or withdrawal from the program and even the education system. In general, web-based learning can be used as a tool to improve learning including programming courses. A specific instance of web-based learning; called content sequencing systems have a high potential to provide adaptive learning for programming languages. Adaptive content sequencing systems analyze individual difference of students and sequence the learning contents based on the students’ needs. By addressing students’ individual differences, it helps students to be actively engaged in the learning process. An engagement is a key element in learning. In this research, the level of students’ engagement is measured using "flow theory". This theory suggested three cognitive conditions when one is doing a particular activity, namely flow (engaged), boredom, and anxiety. Engagement occurs when an individual has an equal level of skill with the given level of challenge. Anxiety and boredom occur when there is unequal level of challenge and skill. The fundamental concepts of the theory are represented in a user interface design by imposing a component known as "flow buttons". The used of the buttons is described as Skill-Challenge Balancing (SCB) technique and it is adapted in a web-based learning system called "LearnJava". It incorporates SCB where its main components are a user interface design and a sequencing engine. Based on this technique, the students’ level of knowledge will be evaluated and analyzed to identify their current level of skill. The technique will sequence the learning contents based on the students’ current level of skill to keep them engage in the web-based learning. An experimental study was conducted to evaluate how effective SCB in helping students to engage in web-based learning. The results suggested that the SCB technique improved students’ engagement in web-based learning

    Bodily crises in skilled performance: Considering the need for artistic habits

    Empirical evidence demonstrates that performing artists are confronted by a variety of ‘bodily crises’ (e.g., injury, attrition of habits induced by ageing) over the course of their careers (Wainwright, Williams, & Turner, 2005). Such crises may present a serious threat to the embodied subject. Unfortunately, many prominent theories of skill acquisition (e.g., Fitts & Posner, 1967) appear to evacuate the body from performance by suggesting that any form of conscious processing (i.e., paying conscious attention to one's action during motor skill execution) will disrupt habitual behaviour. As a result, few researchers have considered how performers might tackle bodily anomalies. In the current paper, we seek to address this issue by discussing a variety of the ‘crises’ that confront the performing body. We start by discussing a number of disciplinary practices that may contribute to these crises. Next, we argue that habitual movements must be open to ‘acts of creativity’ in order to maintain a productive relationship between the performing body and the environment. Then we consider what this ‘creative action’ might involve and discuss a number of approaches (e.g., mindfulness, somaesthetic awareness) that could maintain and improve one's movement proficiency. Here, our argument draws on Dewey's (1922) pragmatist philosophy and his belief that ‘intelligent habit’ was required to help people to improve their movement functioning. Finally, we consider the implications of our argument for current conceptualisations of ‘habitual’ movement and recommend that researchers explore the adaptive and flexible capacity of the performing body

    Effective models of employment-based training

    Evolving models of employment-based training (EBT) are responding to skill shortages and the need to develop technical skills at a level higher than a certificate III—the benchmark qualification level considered by many as the minimum for ensuring sustainable job outcomes (Stanwick 2004). This research explored a variety of current employment-based training models and proposed five enhancements for higher-level qualifications. These changes concentrate on maintaining a balance of learning experiences between educational institutions and the workplace. The project was based around case studies in process manufacturing and child care. Thirty-three individuals, representing employers, employees/apprentices, vocational education and training (VET) providers, industry bodies and training package developers were interviewed. The issues and views expressed by those interviewed from both industries were consistent with what was found in the literature review. Current models of employment-based training can usefully be grouped as: two forms of 'fast-tracking' options in a formal apprenticeship model, especially at certificate III level, to address immediate skills shortages. These are accelerated progression models (shorter durations linked to a truly competency-based approach) and intensive up-front training, followed by work-based learning to ensure immediate productivity of the learner in the workplace higher-level VET qualifications gained either through an apprenticeship or by undertaking a vocational course the design of new skill sets/qualifications at various levels of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) alternative provisions for young people. Although these models continue to make a significant contribution to the skilling of the Australian workforce, their full potential is limited by certain persistent issues. These include inconsistent regulatory arrangements, non-compliance by employers and registered training organisations, poor audit processes, variations in the interpretation and practice of competency-based training, and wages and awards. These various factors mean poor completion rates and losses for individuals, employers, governments and other stakeholders. Recent changes in policy direction are attempting to address some of these issues and simultaneously increase interest and growth in the uptake of employment-based training. Any new models of employment-based training should address existing problems, as well as take into account the emerging needs of industry for skilled labour. The design of the models must also address an ageing workforce and allow flexible entry points for all age groups. Furthermore, future employment-based training models also need to keep pace with how work is organised in an environment characterised by increased competition, outsourcing, casualisation and an emphasis on specialisation and innovation. What is becoming apparent is the need for a compendium of models, rather than a 'one size fits all' approach
