    The steady advancement of microelectronics is associated with an escalating number of challenges for design engineers due to both the tiny dimensions and the enormous complexity of integrated systems. Against this background, this work deals with Network-On-Chip (NOC) as the emerging design paradigm to cope with diverse issues of nanotechnology. The detailed investigations within the chapters focus on the communication-centric aspects of multi-core-systems, whereas performance, power consumption as well as reliability are considered likewise as the essential design criteria

    O GESTAR é um projeto do Ministério do Meio Ambiente, tendo como principal objetivo melhorar a qualidade de vida e do meio ambiente nos assentamentos humanos rurais, por meio de ferramentas de gestão que visam estimular a participação e o comprometimento dos agricultores e sociedade civil como garantia para a sustentabilidade. Uma das ações desenvolvidas dentro deste projeto no território Portal da Amazônia foi a estruturação de uma unidade de referência para o desenvolvimento da região. Para este trabalho selecionou-se 04 comunidades do município de Carlinda, MT, envolvendo cerca de 100 famílias de agricultores familiares, utilizando para as ações de intervenção oreferencial de capital social. As fases o projeto envolveram a realização de diagnóstico e planejamento participativos, seguindo ações de capacitação e organização comunitária, com a construção de projetos comunitários. Do ponto de vista social, os resultados demonstraram que as comunidades sairam de um estado inicial de profunda desarticulação social para o início de uma forma específica de organização, onde valores como confiança e solidariedade se traduzem em comportamentos específicos. Do ponto de vista ambiental, o projeto permitiu que fosse aflorada a discussão sobre os impactos ambientais da produção. Dentro da perspectiva econômica, a venda coletiva da produção e a compra coletiva de insumos permitiram ganhos imediatos na renda das famílias. O projeto permitiu identificar a importância do envolvimento de todos os atores sociais relacionados ao desenvolvimento, destacando-se a sociedade civil organizada e o poder público, permitindo assim o que se classificou como “profissionalização socialmente justa” da produção agropecuária.El GESTAR es un proyecto del Ministério de Médio Ambiente, tiene como principal objetivo, mejorar la calidad de vida y del médio ambiente en los asentamientos humanos rurales, por médio de herramientas de gestión que estimulen la participación y el compromiso de los agricultores y la sociedad civil como garantia para el desarrollo sostenible. Una de las actividades realizadas dentro de este proyecto en el território Portal de la Amazônia fue la estructuración de una unidad de referencia para el desarrollo de la región. Para este trabajo, se seleccionaron cuatro comunidades del município de Carlinda, MT, envolvió aproximadamente 100 familias de agricultores , utilizando para las actividades de intervención, el capital social. The construction of a reference unit to fostersustainable economic development was one of the actions developed by thisproject in the Amazon Portal territory. One hundred families from fourcommunities in the municipality of Carlinda (Mato Grosso state) were selectedto participate the project. The project was divided into four stages: diagnosis;participative planning; actions to enhance capacity building and communityorganization; and project evaluation. As a result of project implementation, thecommunities came out of a state of deep social disarticulation to engage inanother form of social organization in which values such as trust and solidaritywere translated into specific behaviors. From an environmental standpoint, theproject resulted in discussions about the environmental impacts of production.Finally, from an economic perspective, commercialization of production andpurchase of goods through collective means allowed an immediate increase infamily income. The project allowed participants to identify the importance ofinvolving all social actors connected with economic development, especially theorganized civil society and the local State, in a process labeled as "socially fairprofessional capacity building of rural production

    Hardware Acceleration of Electronic Design Automation Algorithms

    With the advances in very large scale integration (VLSI) technology, hardware is going parallel. Software, which was traditionally designed to execute on single core microprocessors, now faces the tough challenge of taking advantage of this parallelism, made available by the scaling of hardware. The work presented in this dissertation studies the acceleration of electronic design automation (EDA) software on several hardware platforms such as custom integrated circuits (ICs), field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and graphics processors. This dissertation concentrates on a subset of EDA algorithms which are heavily used in the VLSI design flow, and also have varying degrees of inherent parallelism in them. In particular, Boolean satisfiability, Monte Carlo based statistical static timing analysis, circuit simulation, fault simulation and fault table generation are explored. The architectural and performance tradeoffs of implementing the above applications on these alternative platforms (in comparison to their implementation on a single core microprocessor) are studied. In addition, this dissertation also presents an automated approach to accelerate uniprocessor code using a graphics processing unit (GPU). The key idea is to partition the software application into kernels in an automated fashion, such that multiple instances of these kernels, when executed in parallel on the GPU, can maximally benefit from the GPU?s hardware resources. The work presented in this dissertation demonstrates that several EDA algorithms can be successfully rearchitected to maximally harness their performance on alternative platforms such as custom designed ICs, FPGAs and graphic processors, and obtain speedups upto 800X. The approaches in this dissertation collectively aim to contribute towards enabling the computer aided design (CAD) community to accelerate EDA algorithms on arbitrary hardware platforms
