Generating Effective Recommendations Using Viewing-Time Weighted Preferences for Attributes
Recommender systems are an increasingly important technology and researchers have recently argued for incorporating different kinds of data to improve recommendation quality. This paper presents a novel approach to generating recommendations and evaluates its effectiveness. First, we review evidence that item viewing time can reveal user preferences for items. Second, we model item preference as a weighted function of preferences for item attributes. We then propose a method for generating recommendations based on these two propositions. The results of a laboratory evaluation show that the proposed approach generated estimated item ratings consistent with explicit item ratings and assigned high ratings to products that reflect revealed preferences of users. We conclude by discussing implications and identifying areas for future research
Explainable Active Learning for Preference Elicitation
Gaining insights into the preferences of new users and subsequently
personalizing recommendations necessitate managing user interactions
intelligently, namely, posing pertinent questions to elicit valuable
information effectively. In this study, our focus is on a specific scenario of
the cold-start problem, where the recommendation system lacks adequate user
presence or access to other users' data is restricted, obstructing employing
user profiling methods utilizing existing data in the system. We employ Active
Learning (AL) to solve the addressed problem with the objective of maximizing
information acquisition with minimal user effort. AL operates for selecting
informative data from a large unlabeled set to inquire an oracle to label them
and eventually updating a machine learning (ML) model. We operate AL in an
integrated process of unsupervised, semi-supervised, and supervised ML within
an explanatory preference elicitation process. It harvests user feedback (given
for the system's explanations on the presented items) over informative samples
to update an underlying ML model estimating user preferences. The designed user
interaction facilitates personalizing the system by incorporating user feedback
into the ML model and also enhances user trust by refining the system's
explanations on recommendations. We implement the proposed preference
elicitation methodology for food recommendation. We conducted human experiments
to assess its efficacy in the short term and also experimented with several AL
strategies over synthetic user profiles that we created for two food datasets,
aiming for long-term performance analysis. The experimental results demonstrate
the efficiency of the proposed preference elicitation with limited user-labeled
data while also enhancing user trust through accurate explanations.Comment: Preprin
Evaluating recommender systems from the user's perspective: survey of the state of the art
A recommender system is a Web technology that proactively suggests items of interest to users based on their objective behavior or explicitly stated preferences. Evaluations of recommender systems (RS) have traditionally focused on the performance of algorithms. However, many researchers have recently started investigating system effectiveness and evaluation criteria from users' perspectives. In this paper, we survey the state of the art of user experience research in RS by examining how researchers have evaluated design methods that augment RS's ability to help users find the information or product that they truly prefer, interact with ease with the system, and form trust with RS through system transparency, control and privacy preserving mechanisms finally, we examine how these system design features influence users' adoption of the technology. We summarize existing work concerning three crucial interaction activities between the user and the system: the initial preference elicitation process, the preference refinement process, and the presentation of the system's recommendation results. Additionally, we will also cover recent evaluation frameworks that measure a recommender system's overall perceptive qualities and how these qualities influence users' behavioral intentions. The key results are summarized in a set of design guidelines that can provide useful suggestions to scholars and practitioners concerning the design and development of effective recommender systems. The survey also lays groundwork for researchers to pursue future topics that have not been covered by existing method
CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap
After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in
multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year.
In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio-
economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown
of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on
requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the
community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our
Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as
National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core
technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research
challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal
challenges
A Novel Adaptation Model for E-Learning Recommender Systems Based on Student’s Learning Style
In recent years, a substantial increase has been witnessed in the use of online learning resources by learn- ers. However, owing to an information overload, many find it difficult to retrieve appropriate learning resources for meeting learning requirements. Most of the existing systems for e-learning make use of a “one-size-fits-all” approach, thus providing all learners with the same content. Whilst recommender systems have scored notable success in the e-commerce domain, they still suffer from drawbacks in terms of making the right recommendations for learning resources. This can be attributed to the differences among learners’ preferences such as varying learning styles, knowledge levels and sequential learning patterns. Hence, to identify the needs of an individual student, e-learning systems that can build profiles of student preferences are required. In addition, changing students’ preferences and multidimensional attributes of the course content are not fully considered simultaneously. It is by failing to review these issues that existing recommendation algorithms often give inaccurate recommendations.
This thesis focuses on student learning styles, with the aim of dynamically tailoring the learning process and course content to meet individual needs. The proposed Ubiquitous LEARNing (ULEARN) system is an adaptive e-learning recommender system geared towards providing a personalised learning environ- ment, which ensures that course learning objects are in line with the learner’s adaptive profile. This thesis delivers four main contributions: First, an innovative algorithm which dynamically reduces the number of questions in the Felder-Silverman Learning Styles (FSLSM) questionnaire for the purpose of initialising student profiles has been proposed.
The second contribution comprises examining the accuracy of various similarity metrics so as to select the most suitable similarity measurements for learning objects recommendation algorithm.
The third contribution includes an Enhanced Collaboration Filtering (ECF) algorithm and an Enhanced Content-Based Filtering (ECBF) algorithm, which solves the issues of cold-start and data sparsity in- herent to the traditional Collaborative Filtering (CF) and the traditional Content-based Filtering (CBF), respectively. Moreover, these two new algorithms have been combined to create a new Enhanced Hybrid Filtering (EHF) algorithm that recommends highly accurate personalised learning objects on the basis of the stu- dents’ learning styles.
The fourth contribution is a new algorithm that tracks patterns of student learning behaviours and dynam- ically adapts the student learning style accordingly.
The ULEARN recommendation system was implemented with Visual Studio in C++ and Windows Pre- sentation Foundation (WPF) for the development of the Graphical User Interface (GUI). The experimental results revealed that the proposed algorithms have achieved significant improvements in student’s profile adaptation and learning objects recommendation in contrast with strong benchmark models. Further find- ings from experiments indicated that ULEARN can provide relevant learning object recommendations based on students’ learning styles with the overall students’ satisfaction at almost 90%. Furthermore, the results showed that the proposed system is capable of mitigating the problems data sparsity and cold-start, thereby improving the accuracy and reliability of recommendation of the learning object. All in all, the ULEARN system is competent enough to support educational institutions in recommending personalised course content, improving students’ performance as well as promoting student engagement.Arab academy for science technology & maritime transpor

Massive privatizations of housing in Europe and Central Asia transition countries have significantly reduced rental tenure choice, threatening to impede residential mobility. Policymakers are intensifying their search for adequate policy responses aimed at broadening tenure choice for more household categories through effective rental housing alternatives in the social and private sectors.
