    DISCRETE PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION FOR THE ORIENTEERING PROBLEM

    Discrete particle swarm optimization (DPSO) is gaining popularity in the area of combinatorial optimization in the recent past due to its simplicity in coding and consistency in performance.  A DPSO algorithm has been developed for orienteering problem (OP) which has been shown to have many practical applications.  It uses reduced variable neighborhood search as a local search tool.  The DPSO algorithm was compared with ten heuristic models from the literature using benchmark problems.  The results show that the DPSO algorithm is a robust algorithm that can optimally solve the well known OP test problems

    Spatial coverage in routing and path planning problems

    Routing and path planning problems that involve spatial coverage have received increasing attention in recent years in different application areas. Spatial coverage refers to the possibility of considering nodes that are not directly served by a vehicle as visited for the purpose of the objective function or constraints. Despite similarities between the underlying problems, solution approaches have been developed in different disciplines independently, leading to different terminologies and solution techniques. This paper proposes a unified view of the approaches: Based on a formal introduction of the concept of spatial coverage in vehicle routing, it presents a classification scheme for core problem features and summarizes problem variants and solution concepts developed in the domains of operations research and robotics. The connections between these related problem classes offer insights into common underlying structures and open possibilities for developing new applications and algorithms

    A Heuristic-Based Simulation for an Education Process to Learn about Optimization Applications in Logistics and Transportation

    In the context of the DigiLab4U international project, this paper describes a simulationbased serious game that can be used as a virtual teaching lab in higher education courses, especially in Industrial and Systems Engineering, Data Science, Management Science and Operations Research, as well as Computer Science. The learning activity focuses on understanding distribution logistics problems related to transportation optimization using different techniques. These optimization challenges include the vehicle routing problem, the arc routing problem, and the team orienteering problem. As a result of the learning process in the virtual lab, it is expected that students acquire competencies and skills related to logistics and transportation challenges as well as problem-solving. These competencies and skills can be precious for students’ future careers, since they increase students’ analytical skills, capacity to understand heuristic-based algorithms, teamwork and interdisciplinary communication skills, programming skills, and statistical abilities. A preliminary version of this training activity has already been used in MSc and PhD courses held at universities in Spain, Italy, Ireland, and Portugal

    Optimizing transport logistics under uncertainty with simheuristics: concepts, review and trends

    Background: Uncertainty conditions have been increasingly considered in optimization problems arising in real-life transportation and logistics activities. Generally, the analysis of complex systems in these non-deterministic environments is approached with simulation techniques. However, simulation is not an optimization tool. Hence, it must be combined with optimization methods when our goal is to: (i) minimize operating costs while guaranteeing a given quality of service; or (ii) maximize system performance using limited resources. When solving NP-hard optimization problems, the use of metaheuristics allows us to deal with large-scale instances in reasonable computation times. By adding a simulation layer to the metaheuristics, the methodology becomes a simheuristic, which allows the optimization element to solve scenarios under uncertainty. Methods: This paper reviews the indexed documents in Elsevier Scopus database of both initial as well as recent applications of simheuristics in the logistics and transportation field. The paper also discusses open research lines in this knowledge area. Results: The simheuristics approaches to solving NP-hard and large-scale combinatorial optimization problems under uncertainty scenarios are discussed, as they frequently appear in real-life applications in logistics and transportation activities. Conclusions: The way in which the different simheuristic components interact puts a special emphasis in the different stages that can contribute to make the approach more efficient from a computational perspective.     Solving Vehicle Routing Problems under Uncertainty and in Dynamic Scenarios: From Simheuristics to Agile Optimization

    [EN] Many real-life applications of the vehicle routing problem (VRP) occur in scenarios subject to uncertainty or dynamic conditions. Thus, for instance, traveling times or customers' demands might be better modeled as random variables than as deterministic values. Likewise, traffic conditions could evolve over time, synchronization issues should need to be considered, or a real-time re-optimization of the routing plan can be required as new data become available in a highly dynamic environment. Clearly, different solving approaches are needed to efficiently cope with such a diversity of scenarios. After providing an overview of current trends in VRPs, this paper reviews a set of heuristic-based algorithms that have been designed and employed to solve VRPs with the aforementioned properties.
