Efficient Protection of Many-to-One Communications
International audienceThe dependability of a network is its ability to cope with failures , i.e., to maintain established connections even in case of failures. IP routing protocols (such as OSPF and RIP) do not fit the dependability objectives of today applications. Moreover, forwarding techniques based on destination address (like IP) induce many-to-one connections. If a dependable connection is needed, all primary paths and protections having the same destination must be established in a coordinated way. In this paper, we propose a fault recovery for many-to-one connections based on a cold (preplanned) protection. The main advantage of our approach is that the recovery in case of failures is achieved within a short delay. Additionally, with respect to other approaches, the dependability of the routing scheme is increased in the way that it statistically copes with many failures. The algorithm we propose computes an efficient backup for an arbitrary primary tree using an improved multi-tree algorithm
Lightweight reconfiguration security services for AXI-based MPSoCs
International audienceNowadays, security is a key constraint in MPSoC development as many critical and secret information can be stored and manipulated within these systems. Addressing the protection issue in an efficient way is challenging as information can leak from many points. However one strategic component of a bus-based MPSoC is the communication architecture as all information that an attacker could try to extract or modify would be visible on the bus. Thus monitoring and controlling communications allows an efficient protection of the whole system. Attacks can be detected and discarded before system corruption. In this work, we propose a lightweight solution to dynamically update hardware firewall enhancements which secure data exchanges in a bus-based MPSoC. It provides a standalone security solution for AXI-based embedded systems where no user intervention is required for security mechanisms update. An FPGA implementation demonstrates an area overhead of around 11% for the adaptive version of the hardware firewall compared to the static one
Practical issues for the implementation of survivability and recovery techniques in optical networks
Scalable video/image transmission using rate compatible PUM turbo codes
The robust delivery of video over emerging wireless networks poses many challenges due to the heterogeneity of access networks, the variations in streaming devices, and the expected variations in network conditions caused by interference and coexistence. The proposed approach exploits the joint optimization of a wavelet-based scalable video/image coding framework and a forward error correction method based on PUM turbo codes. The scheme minimizes the reconstructed image/video distortion at the decoder subject to a constraint on the overall transmission bitrate budget. The minimization is achieved by exploiting the rate optimization technique and the statistics of the transmission channel
Energy management in communication networks: a journey through modelling and optimization glasses
The widespread proliferation of Internet and wireless applications has
produced a significant increase of ICT energy footprint. As a response, in the
last five years, significant efforts have been undertaken to include
energy-awareness into network management. Several green networking frameworks
have been proposed by carefully managing the network routing and the power
state of network devices.
Even though approaches proposed differ based on network technologies and
sleep modes of nodes and interfaces, they all aim at tailoring the active
network resources to the varying traffic needs in order to minimize energy
consumption. From a modeling point of view, this has several commonalities with
classical network design and routing problems, even if with different
objectives and in a dynamic context.
With most researchers focused on addressing the complex and crucial
technological aspects of green networking schemes, there has been so far little
attention on understanding the modeling similarities and differences of
proposed solutions. This paper fills the gap surveying the literature with
optimization modeling glasses, following a tutorial approach that guides
through the different components of the models with a unified symbolism. A
detailed classification of the previous work based on the modeling issues
included is also proposed
