    An efficient CS-CPWL Based Predistorter

    We study the performance of Hammerstein predistorters (PD) to model and compensate nonlinear effects produced by a high power amplifier with memory. A novel Hammerstein model is introduced that includes, as the basic static nonlinearity, the complex simplicial canonical piecewise linear (CS-CPWL) description. Previous results by the authors have shown that the use of this kind of static nonlinearity leads to an efficient representation of basic nonlinear models.     Adaptive kernel canonical correlation analysis algorithms for nonparametric identification of Wiener and Hammerstein systems

    This paper treats the identification of nonlinear systems that consist of a cascade of a linear channel and a nonlinearity, such as the well-known Wiener and Hammerstein systems. In particular, we follow a supervised identification approach that simultaneously identifies both parts of the nonlinear system. Given the correct restrictions on the identification problem, we show how kernel canonical correlation analysis (KCCA) emerges as the logical solution to this problem.We then extend the proposed identification algorithm to an adaptive version allowing to deal with time-varying systems. In order to avoid overfitting problems, we discuss and compare three possible regularization techniques for both the batch and the adaptive versions of the proposed algorithm. Simulations are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented algorithm

    Wavelet and Multiscale Methods

    Various scientific models demand finer and finer resolutions of relevant features. Paradoxically, increasing computational power serves to even heighten this demand. Namely, the wealth of available data itself becomes a major obstruction. Extracting essential information from complex structures and developing rigorous models to quantify the quality of information leads to tasks that are not tractable by standard numerical techniques. The last decade has seen the emergence of several new computational methodologies to address this situation. Their common features are the nonlinearity of the solution methods as well as the ability of separating solution characteristics living on different length scales. Perhaps the most prominent examples lie in multigrid methods and adaptive grid solvers for partial differential equations. These have substantially advanced the frontiers of computability for certain problem classes in numerical analysis. Other highly visible examples are: regression techniques in nonparametric statistical estimation, the design of universal estimators in the context of mathematical learning theory and machine learning; the investigation of greedy algorithms in complexity theory, compression techniques and encoding in signal and image processing; the solution of global operator equations through the compression of fully populated matrices arising from boundary integral equations with the aid of multipole expansions and hierarchical matrices; attacking problems in high spatial dimensions by sparse grid or hyperbolic wavelet concepts. More secure intellectual foundations will be required to achieve better, more reliable and safer capabilities as their penetration into society deepens. Presently missing foundations include the identification of fundamental physical limits, the development of new dynamical systems theory and the invention of physically grounded programming languages. In this work we review the construction of both the variational and Hamiltonian versions of these methods.
