    Low-swing signaling for energy efficient on-chip networks

However, the energy consumption of these networks is becoming comparable to that of computation cores, making further scaling of core counts difficult. This thesis makes several contributions to low-swing signaling circuit design for the energy efficient on-chip networks in two separate projects: on-chip networks optimized for one-to-many multicasts and broadcasts, and link designs that allow on-chip networks to approach an ideal interconnection fabric. A low-swing crossbar switch, which is based on tri-state Reduced-Swing Drivers (RSDs), is presented for the first project. Measurement results of its test chip fabricated in 45nm SOI CMOS show that the tri-state RSD-based crossbar enables 55% power savings as compared to an equivalent full-swing crossbar and link. Also, the measurement results show that the proposed crossbar allows the broadcast-optimized on-chip networks using a single pipeline stage for physical data transmission to operate at 21% higher data rate, when compared with the full-swing networks. For the second project, two clockless low-swing repeaters, a Self-Resetting Logic Repeater (SRLR) and a Voltage-Locked Repeater (VLR), have been proposed and analyzed in simulation only. They both require no reference clock, differential signaling, and bias current. Such digital-intensive properties enable them to approach energy and delay performance of a point-to-point interconnect of variable lengths.     BOOM: Broadcast Optimizations for On-chip Meshes

    Future many-core chips will require an on-chip network that can support broadcasts and multicasts at good power-performance. A vanilla on-chip network would send multiple unicast packets for each broadcast packet, resulting in latency, throughput and power overheads. Recent research in on-chip multicast support has proposed forking of broadcast/multicast packets within the network at the router buffers, but these techniques are far from ideal, since they increase buffer occupancy which lowers throughput, and packets incur delay and power penalties at each router. In this work, we analyze an ideal broadcast mesh; show the substantial gaps between state-of-the-art multicast NoCs and the ideal; then propose BOOM, which comprises a WHIRL routing protocol that ideally load balances broadcast traffic, a mXbar multicast crossbar circuit that enables multicast traversal at similar energy-delay as unicasts, and speculative bypassing of buffering for multicast flits. Together, they enable broadcast packets to approach the delay, energy, and throughput of the ideal fabric. Our simulations show BOOM realizing an average network latency that is 5% off ideal, attaining 96% of ideal throughput, with energy consumption that is 9% above ideal. Evaluations using synthetic traffic show BOOM achieving a latency reduction of 61%, throughput improvement of 63%, and buffer power reduction of 80% as compared to a baseline broadcast. Simulations with PARSEC benchmarks show BOOM reducing average request and network latency by 40% and 15% respectively

    Approaching the theoretical limits of a mesh NoC with a 16-node chip prototype in 45nm SOI

    In this paper, we present a case study of our chip prototype of a 16-node 4x4 mesh NoC fabricated in 45nm SOI CMOS that aims to simultaneously optimize energy-latency-throughput for unicasts, multicasts and broadcasts. We first define and analyze the theoretical limits of a mesh NoC in latency, throughput and energy, then describe how we approach these limits through a combination of microarchitecture and circuit techniques. Our 1.1V 1GHz NoC chip achieves 1-cycle router-and-link latency at each hop and energy-efficient router-level multicast support, delivering 892Gb/s (87.1% of the theoretical bandwidth limit) at 531.4mW for a mixed traffic of unicasts and broadcasts. Through this fabrication, we derive insights that help guide our research, and we believe, will also be useful to the NoC and multicore research community

    SCORPIO: A 36-Core Research Chip Demonstrating Snoopy Coherence on a Scalable Mesh NoC with In-Network Ordering

    URL to conference programIn the many-core era, scalable coherence and on-chip interconnects are crucial for shared memory processors. While snoopy coherence is common in small multicore systems, directory-based coherence is the de facto choice for scalability to many cores, as snoopy relies on ordered interconnects which do not scale. However, directory-based coherence does not scale beyond tens of cores due to excessive directory area overhead or inaccurate sharer tracking. Prior techniques supporting ordering on arbitrary unordered networks are impractical for full multicore chip designs. We present SCORPIO, an ordered mesh Network-on-Chip(NoC) architecture with a separate fixed-latency, bufferless network to achieve distributed global ordering. Message delivery is decoupled from the ordering, allowing messages to arrive in any order and at any time, and still be correctly ordered. The architecture is designed to plug-and-play with existing multicore IP and with practicality, timing, area, and power as top concerns. Full-system 36 and 64-core simulations on SPLASH-2 and PARSEC benchmarks show an average application run time reduction of 24.1% and 12.9%, in comparison to distributed directory and AMD HyperTransport coherence protocols, respectively. The SCORPIO architecture is incorporated in an 11 mm-by- 13 mm chip prototype, fabricated in IBM 45nm SOI technology, comprising 36 Freescale e200 Power Architecture TM cores with private L1 and L2 caches interfacing with the NoC via ARM AMBA, along with two Cadence on-chip DDR2 controllers. The chip prototype achieves a post synthesis operating frequency of 1 GHz (833 MHz post-layout) with an estimated power of 28.8 W (768 mW per tile), while the network consumes only 10% of tile area and 19 % of tile power.United States.     Scheduling and reconfiguration of interconnection network switches

    Interconnection networks are important parts of modern computing systems, facilitating communication between a system\u27s components. Switches connecting various nodes of an interconnection network serve to move data in the network. The switch\u27s delay and throughput impact the overall performance of the network and thus the system. Scheduling efficient movement of data through a switch and configuring the switch to realize a schedule are the main themes of this research. We consider various interconnection network switches including (i) crossbar-based switches, (ii) circuit-switched tree switches, and (iii) fat-tree switches. For crossbar-based input-queued switches, a recent result established that logarithmic packet delay is possible. However, this result assumes that packet transmission time through the switch is no less than schedule-generation time. We prove that without this assumption (as is the case in practice) packet delay becomes linear. We also report results of simulations that bear out our result for practical switch sizes and indicate that a fast scheduling algorithm reduces not only packet delay but also buffer size. We also propose a fast mesh-of-trees based distributed switch scheduling (maximal-matching based) algorithm that has polylog complexity. A circuit-switched tree (CST) can serve as an interconnect structure for various computing architectures and models such as the self-reconfigurable gate array and the reconfigurable mesh. A CST is a tree structure with source and destination processing elements as leaves and switches as internal nodes. We design several scheduling and configuration algorithms that distributedly partition a given set of communications into non-conflicting subsets and then establish switch settings and paths on the CST corresponding to the communications. A fat-tree is another widely used interconnection structure in many of today\u27s high-performance clusters. We embed a reconfigurable mesh inside a fat-tree switch to generate efficient connections. We present an R-Mesh-based algorithm for a fat-tree switch that creates buses connecting input and output ports corresponding to various communications using that switch

    Architecture design and performance analysis of practical buffered-crossbar packet switches

    Combined input crosspoint buffered (CICB) packet switches were introduced to relax inputoutput arbitration timing and provide high throughput under admissible traffic. However, the amount of memory required in the crossbar of an N x N switch is N2x k x L, where k is the crosspoint buffer size and needs to be of size RTT in cells, L is the packet size. RTT is the round-trip time which is defined by the distance between line cards and switch fabric. When the switch size is large or RTT is not negligible, the memory amount required makes the implementation costly or infeasible for buffered crossbar switches. To reduce the required memory amount, a family of shared memory combined-input crosspoint-buffered (SMCB) packet switches, where the crosspoint buffers are shared among inputs, are introduced in this thesis. One of the proposed switches uses a memory speedup of in and dynamic memory allocation, and the other switch avoids speedup by arbitrating the access of inputs to the crosspoint buffers. These two switches reduce the required memory of the buffered crossbar by 50% or more and achieve equivalent throughput under independent and identical traffic with uniform distributions when using random selections. The proposed mSMCB switch is extended to support differentiated services and long RTT. To support P traffic classes with different priorities, CICB switches have been reported to use N2x k x L x P amount of memory to avoid blocking of high priority cells.The proposed SMCB switch with support for differentiated services requires 1/mP of the memory amount in the buffered crossbar and achieves similar throughput performance to that of a CICB switch with similar priority management, while using no speedup in the shared memory. The throughput performance of SMCB switch with crosspoint buffers shared by inputs (I-SMCB) is studied under multicast traffic. An output-based shared-memory crosspoint buffered (O-SMCB) packet switch is proposed where the crosspoint buffers are shared by two outputs and use no speedup. The proposed O-SMCB switch provides high performance under admissible uniform and nonuniform multicast traffic models while using 50% of the memory used in CICB switches. Furthermore, the O-SMCB switch provides higher throughput than the I-SMCB switch. As SMCB switches can efficiently support an RTT twice as long as that supported by CICB switches and as the performance of SMCB switches is bounded by a matching between inputs and crosspoint buffers, a new family of CICB switches with flexible access to crosspoint buffers are proposed to support longer RTTs than SMCB switches and to provide higher throughput under a wide variety of admissible traffic models. The CICB switches with flexible access allow an input to use any available crosspoint buffer at a given output. The proposed switches reduce the required crosspoint buffer size by a factor of N , keep the service of cells in sequence, and use no speedup. This new class of switches achieve higher throughput performance than CICB switches under a large variety of traffic models, while supporting long RTTs. Crosspoint buffered switches that are implemented in single chips have limited scalability. To support a large number of ports in crosspoint buffered switches, memory-memory-memory (MMM) Clos-network switches are an alternative. The MMM switches that use minimum memory amount at the central module is studied. Although, this switch can provide a moderate throughput, MMM switch may serve cells out of sequence. As keeping cells in sequence in an MMM switch may require buffers be distributed per flow, an MMM with extended memory in the switch modules is studied. To solve the out of sequence problem in MMM switches, a queuing architecture is proposed for an MMM switch. The service of cells in sequence is analyzed
