    Analyzing the Tradeoff Between Efficiency and Flexibility in Cellular Manufacturing Systems

    A limitation of Group Technology (GT)-based cellular manufacturing systems is that their limited routing flexibility offsets the setup and material handling efficiencies they offer. Virtual Cellular Manufacturing (VCM) systems do not encounter the problem of limited routing flexibility, but do not yield the same efficiencies as GT-based cellular systems. This study compares the performance of a GT-based cellular manufacturing system that utilizes operations overlapping to further improve material flow efficiency with that of a virtual cellular manufacturing system. Results suggest that while the use of operations overlapping in a GT-based cellular manufacturing system can to some extent compensate for the system’s low routing flexibility, it cannot fully overcome the high flow time variance that results from the permanent dedication of machine resources. As a result, GT-based cellular manufacturing performs comparably to VCM only under a limited set of conditions

    Lot streaming Permutation Flow shop with energy awareness

    In this work, the flow shop scheduling problem with energy awareness is approached with lot-streaming strategies. Energy consumption is modeled within the objective function, together with the makespan, by means of a normalized and weighted sum. Thus, reducing energy consumption guides the optimization process. For lot streaming approaches mathematical models are provided and assessed. The results showed that lot-streaming is an efficient strategy to address this problem, allowing to improve both makespan and total energy consumption compared to the problem without lot-streaming. In turn, the selection of processing speeds for each sublot was incorporated, which improved the strategy yielding the best quality solutions.Fil: Florencia D'Amico. Universidad Nacional del Sur.     Improved aviation readiness and inventory reductions through repair cycle time reductions using modeling and simulation

    This thesis research focuses on improved aviation readiness and reductions in pipeline inventory investment through repair Turn Around Time reductions related to the component repair processes internal to the Naval Aviation Depot (NADEP). Specific emphasis was given to the repair flow of a specific component from induction into the Depot for repair to the ultimate availability for sale to customers in a ready-for-issue status. The research models the current NADEP repair process flow and simulates enhancements to the process flow. These enhancements identify savings of over $52,000 in repair pipeline inventory investment for the candidate item.
