    Developing Attorneys for the Future: What Can We Learn From the Fast Trackers?

    Leaders in law firms tend to be those attorneys who thrive in a law firm environment from the beginning—successful associates who become successful partners. Later, they are asked to be the leaders of practice areas, committees and, ultimately, part of senior management. While high-performing associates may not be formally promoted to leadership positions for some time, it is important to understand what makes them—as young associates—stand out from their peers. Who are these future leaders, and what qualities predict their advancement in a law firm environment? These are the questions we set out to explore. To date, little empirical work exists on the characteristics and behaviors of high-potential associates—how to recognize them from the beginning and how to develop them. Instead, law students continue to be hired most commonly based on the law school they attended and their GPA, under the assumption that law school and GPA are related to future performance as an attorney. Transcript and resume review are typically accompanied by a series of 30-minute interviews consisting of questions that vary from candidate to candidate. Consequently, hiring decisions result from a combination of the reputation of the law school attended, GPA, and the interviewing partners’ gut feeling

    Self-confidence, overconfidence and prenatal testosterone exposure: evidence from the lab

    This paper examines whether foetal testosterone exposure predicts the extent of confidence and over-confidence in own absolute ability in adulthood. To study this question, we elicited incentive-compatible measures of confidence and over-confidence in the lab and correlate them with measures of right hand 2D:4D, used as as a marker for the strength of prenatal testosterone exposure. We provide evidence that men with higher prenatal testosterone exposure (i.e., low 2D:4D ratio) are less likely to set unrealistically high expectations about their own performance. This in turn helps them to gain higher monetary rewards. Men exposed to low prenatal testosterone levels, instead, set unrealistically high expectations which results in self-defeating behavior

    Reliable Prediction of Channel Assignment Performance in Wireless Mesh Networks

    The advancements in wireless mesh networks (WMN), and the surge in multi-radio multi-channel (MRMC) WMN deployments have spawned a multitude of network performance issues. These issues are intricately linked to the adverse impact of endemic interference. Thus, interference mitigation is a primary design objective in WMNs. Interference alleviation is often effected through efficient channel allocation (CA) schemes which fully utilize the potential of MRMC environment and also restrain the detrimental impact of interference. However, numerous CA schemes have been proposed in research literature and there is a lack of CA performance prediction techniques which could assist in choosing a suitable CA for a given WMN. In this work, we propose a reliable interference estimation and CA performance prediction approach. We demonstrate its efficacy by substantiating the CA performance predictions for a given WMN with experimental data obtained through rigorous simulations on an ns-3 802.11g environment.Comment: Accepted in ICACCI-201

    Predictive validity of the HCR-20 for inpatient aggression:the effect of intellectual disability on accuracy

    BackgroundPeople with intellectual disability (ID) account for a large proportion of aggressive incidents in secure and forensic psychiatric services. Although the Historical, Clinical, Risk Management 20 (HCR-20) has good predictive validity in inpatient settings, it does not perform equally in all groups and there is little evidence for its efficacy in those with ID.MethodA pseudo-prospective cohort study of the predictive efficacy of the HCR-20 for those with ID (n = 109) was conducted in a UK secure mental health setting using routinely collected risk data. Performance of the HCR-20 in the ID group was compared with a comparison group of adult inpatients without an ID (n = 504). Analysis controlled for potential covariates including security level, length of stay, gender and diagnosis.ResultsThe HCR-20 total score was a significant predictor of any aggression and of physical aggression for both groups, although the area under the curve values did not reach the threshold for a large effect size. The clinical subscale performed significantly better in those without an ID compared with those with. The ID group had a greater number of relevant historical and risk management items. The clinicians' summary judgment significantly predicted both types of aggressive outcomes in the ID group, but did not predict either in those without an ID.ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that, after controlling for a range of potential covariates, the HCR-20 is a significant predictor of inpatient aggression in people with an ID and performs as well as for a comparison group of mentally disordered individuals without ID. The potency of HCR-20 subscales and items varied between the ID and comparison groups suggesting important target areas for improved prediction and risk management interventions in those with ID
