    The predictive value of pain event-related potentials for the clinical experience of pain

    Event-related potentials (ERPs) have been found to be related to subjective experience of experimental pain. But how are they related to the subjective experience of clinical pain? The current study investigated the predictive value of the pain ERP for the subjective experience of clinical pain. Event-related potentials in response to experimental pain were measured in 75 chronic low back pain sufferers. In addition, a two-week registration to note the amount of pain they experienced in daily life was done. The results demonstrate that the N2-component at Cz and C4 of the pain ERP (contralateral to the side of the stimulation) were significant predictors of clinical pain, and even stronger predictors than the accompanying subjective ratings of experimental pain. Thus, it seems promising to use event-related potentials as a more objective measure to make predictions about a person's likely pain experience in daily life

    Modulation of cognitive performance and mood by aromas of peppermint and ylang-ylang

    This study provides further evidence for the impact of the aromas of plant essential oils on aspects of cognition and mood in healthy participants. One hundred and forty-four volunteers were randomly assigned to conditions of ylang-ylang aroma, peppermint aroma, or no aroma control. Cognitive performance was assessed using the Cognitive Drug Research computerized assessment battery, with mood scales completed before and after cognitive testing. The analysis of the data revealed significant differences between conditions on a number of the factors underpinning the tests that constitute the battery. Peppermint was found to enhance memory whereas ylang-ylang impaired it, and lengthened processing speed. In terms of subjective mood peppermint increased alertness and ylang-ylang decreased it, but significantly increased calmness. These results provide support for the contention that the aromas of essential oils can produce significant and idiosyncratic effects on both subjective and objective assessments of aspects of human behavior. They are discussed with reference to possible pharmacological and psychological modes of influence

    Bacteria Hunt: Evaluating multi-paradigm BCI interaction

    The multimodal, multi-paradigm brain-computer interfacing (BCI) game Bacteria Hunt was used to evaluate two aspects of BCI interaction in a gaming context. One goal was to examine the effect of feedback on the ability of the user to manipulate his mental state of relaxation. This was done by having one condition in which the subject played the game with real feedback, and another with sham feedback. The feedback did not seem to affect the game experience (such as sense of control and tension) or the objective indicators of relaxation, alpha activity and heart rate. The results are discussed with regard to clinical neurofeedback studies. The second goal was to look into possible interactions between the two BCI paradigms used in the game: steady-state visually-evoked potentials (SSVEP) as an indicator of concentration, and alpha activity as a measure of relaxation. SSVEP stimulation activates the cortex and can thus block the alpha rhythm. Despite this effect, subjects were able to keep their alpha power up, in compliance with the instructed relaxation task.     Effects of stress and relaxation on central pain modulation in chronic whiplash and fibromyalgia patients compared to healthy controls

    Background: Compelling evidence has demonstrated that impaired central pain modulation contributes to persistent pain in patients with chronic whiplash associated disorders (WAD) and fibromyalgia (FM). However, there is limited research concerning the influence of stress and relaxation on central pain modulation in patients with chronic WAD and FM. Objectives: The present study aims to investigate the effects of acute cognitive stress and relaxation on central pain modulation in chronic WAD and FM patients compared to healthy individuals. Study Design: A randomized crossover design was employed. Setting: The present study took place at the University of Brussels, the University Hospital Brussels, and the University of Antwerp. Methods: Fifty-nine participants (16 chronic WAD patients, 21 FM, 22 pain-free controls) were enrolled and subjected to various pain measurements. Temporal summation (TS) of pain and conditioned pain modulation (CPM) were evaluated. Subsequently, participants were randomly allocated to either a group that received progressive relaxation therapy or a group that performed a battery of cognitive tests (= cognitive stressor). Afterwards, all pain measurements were repeated. One week later participant groups were switched. Results: A significant difference was found between the groups in the change in TS in response to relaxation (P = 0.008) and cognitive stress (P = 0.003). TS decreased in response to relaxation and cognitive stress in chronic WAD patients and controls. In contrast, TS increased after both interventions in FM patients. CPM efficacy decreased in all 3 groups in response to relaxation (P = 0.002) and cognitive stress (P = 0.001). Limitations: The obtained results only apply for a single session of muscle relaxation therapy and cognitive stress, whereby no conclusions can be made for effects on pain perception and modulation of chronic cognitive stress and long-term relaxation therapies. Conclusions: A single relaxation session as well as cognitive stress may have negative acute effects on pain modulation in patients with FM, while cognitive stress and relaxation did not worsen bottom-up sensitization in chronic WAD patients and healthy persons. However, endogenous pain inhibition, assessed using a CPM paradigm, worsened in chronic WAD and FM patients, as well as in healthy people following both interventions

    Sample Size Bias In Retrospective Estimates Of Average Duration

    People often estimate the average duration of several events (e.g., on average, how long does it take to drive from one's home to his or her office). While there is a great deal of research investigating estimates of duration for a single event, few studies have examined estimates when people must average across numerous stimuli or events. The current studies were designed to fill this gap by examining how people's estimates of average duration were influenced by the number of stimuli being averaged (i.e., the sample size). Based on research investigating the sample size bias, we predicted that participants' judgments of average duration would increase as the sample size increased. Across four studies, we demonstrated a sample size bias for estimates of average duration with different judgment types (numeric estimates and comparisons), study designs (between and within-subjects), and paradigms (observing images and performing tasks). The results are consistent with the more general notion that psychological representations of magnitudes in one dimension (e.g., quantity) can influence representations of magnitudes in another dimension (e.g., duration)

    Bacteria Hunt: A multimodal, multiparadigm BCI game

    Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) allow users to control applications by brain activity. Among their possible applications for non-disabled people, games are promising candidates. BCIs can enrich game play by the mental and affective state information they contain. During the eNTERFACE’09 workshop we developed the Bacteria Hunt game which can be played by keyboard and BCI, using SSVEP and relative alpha power. We conducted experiments in order to investigate what difference positive vs. negative neurofeedback would have on subjects’ relaxation states and how well the different BCI paradigms can be used together. We observed no significant difference in mean alpha band power, thus relaxation, and in user experience between the games applying positive and negative feedback. We also found that alpha power before SSVEP stimulation was significantly higher than alpha power during SSVEP stimulation indicating that there is some interference between the two BCI paradigms

    The concept underlying the Engineering Data Compendium was the product of a research and development program (Integrated Perceptual Information for Designers project) aimed at facilitating the application of basic research findings in human performance to the design and military crew systems. The principal objective was to develop a workable strategy for: (1) identifying and distilling information of potential value to system design from the existing research literature, and (2) presenting this technical information in a way that would aid its accessibility, interpretability, and applicability by systems designers. The present four volumes of the Engineering Data Compendium represent the first implementation of this strategy. This is the first volume, the User's Guide, containing a description of the program and instructions for its use

    Effects of American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) on neurocognitive function: an acute, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study

    Over the last decade, Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng) has been shown to improve aspects of human cognitive function. American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) has a distinct ginsenoside profile from P. ginseng, promising cognitive enhancing properties in preclinical studies and benefits processes linked to human cognition. The availability of a highly standardised extract of P. quinquefolius (Cereboost (TM)) led us to evaluate its neurocognitive properties in humans for the first time. This randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial (N = 32, healthy young adults) assessed the acute mood, neurocognitive and glycaemic effects of three doses (100, 200 400 mg) of Cereboost (TM) (P. quinquefolius standardised to 10.65% ginsenosides). Participants' mood, cognitive function and blood glucose were measured 1, 3 and 6 h following administration. There was a significant improvement of working memory (WM) performance associated with P. quinquefolius. Corsi block performance was improved by all doses at all testing times. There were differential effects of all doses on other WM tasks which were maintained across the testing day. Choice reaction time accuracy and 'calmness' were significantly improved by 100 mg. There were no changes in blood glucose levels. This preliminary study has identified robust working memory enhancement following administration of American ginseng. These effects are distinct from those of Asian ginseng and suggest that psychopharmacological properties depend critically on ginsenoside profiles. These results have ramifications for the psychopharmacology of herbal extracts and merit further study using different dosing regimens and in populations where cognition is fragile

    Combining Attention Bias Pretraining with Exposure Therapy for Individuals with a Fear of Spiders

    The exposure therapy literature supports the notion that facilitated attentional focus on threat is necessary for a reduction in fear symptoms. A newer, computer-based cognitive training program for anxiety conditions that manipulates patterns of attentional allocation called attention bias modification has also demonstrated efficacy in the reduction of anxiety symptoms. Interestingly, this form of treatment promotes the opposite pattern of attentional processing (i.e., disengagement from threat stimuli). Taken together, it appears that the optimal pattern of attentional allocation during exposure needed to facilitate the reduction of anxiety symptoms remains unclear. Furthermore, the effect of combining attention bias modification with exposure therapy has yet to be established in the literature. Research that directly examines the role of attention in the process of exposure therapy may have the benefit of increasing our understanding of this underlying mechanism and improving this form of treatment. To this end, participants of the current study were randomly assigned to receive a computer-based treatment program that either trained attention towards or away from spider-threat stimuli or a placebo program that was not expected to alter patterns of attentional processing. In addition, all participants completed a single session of exposure therapy. Group differences were examined in terms of subjective fear and anxiety symptoms, behavioral and physiological indices of fear and avoidance, and patterns of attentional processing. Results indicated that there is some evidence attention was trained in the expected directions, although that the adjunctive attention pre-training program did not yield differential impact on the exposure therapy procedure. There is also evidence that individuals in all groups increased in attentional engagement towards spider images suggesting the possibility that exposure may have overridden the effects of attention training. Explanations for the observed null findings will be discussed and suggestions for future research will be presented
