    Structural health monitoring of offshore wind turbines: A review through the Statistical Pattern Recognition Paradigm

    Offshore Wind has become the most profitable renewable energy source due to the remarkable development it has experienced in Europe over the last decade. In this paper, a review of Structural Health Monitoring Systems (SHMS) for offshore wind turbines (OWT) has been carried out considering the topic as a Statistical Pattern Recognition problem. Therefore, each one of the stages of this paradigm has been reviewed focusing on OWT application. These stages are: Operational Evaluation; Data Acquisition, Normalization and Cleansing; Feature Extraction and Information Condensation; and Statistical Model Development. It is expected that optimizing each stage, SHMS can contribute to the development of efficient Condition-Based Maintenance Strategies. Optimizing this strategy will help reduce labor costs of OWTs׳ inspection, avoid unnecessary maintenance, identify design weaknesses before failure, improve the availability of power production while preventing wind turbines׳ overloading, therefore, maximizing the investments׳ return. In the forthcoming years, a growing interest in SHM technologies for OWT is expected, enhancing the potential of offshore wind farm deployments further offshore. Increasing efficiency in operational management will contribute towards achieving UK׳s 2020 and 2050 targets, through ultimately reducing the Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE)

    Human Being Detection from UWB NLOS Signals: Accuracy and Generality of Advanced Machine Learning Models

    This paper studies the problem of detecting human beings in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) conditions using an ultra-wideband radar. We perform an extensive measurement campaign in realistic environments, considering different body orientations, the obstacles’ materials, and radar– obstacle distances. We examine two main scenarios according to the radar position: (i) placed on top of a mobile cart; (ii) handheld at different heights. We empirically analyze and compare several input representations and machine learning (ML) methods—supervised and unsupervised, symbolic and non-symbolic—according to both their accuracy in detecting NLOS human beings and their adaptability to unseen cases. Our study proves the effectiveness and flexibility of modern ML techniques, avoiding environment-specific configurations and benefiting from knowledge transference. Unlike traditional TLC approaches, ML allows for generalization, overcoming limits due to unknown or only partially known observation models and insufficient labeled data, which usually occur in emergencies or in the presence of time/cost constraints

    Evolving Spatio-temporal Data Machines Based on the NeuCube Neuromorphic Framework: Design Methodology and Selected Applications

    The paper describes a new type of evolving connectionist systems (ECOS) called evolving spatio-temporal data machines based on neuromorphic, brain-like information processing principles (eSTDM). These are multi-modular computer systems designed to deal with large and fast spatio/spectro temporal data using spiking neural networks (SNN) as major processing modules. ECOS and eSTDM in particular can learn incrementally from data streams, can include ‘on the fly’ new input variables, new output class labels or regression outputs, can continuously adapt their structure and functionality, can be visualised and interpreted for new knowledge discovery and for a better understanding of the data and the processes that generated it. eSTDM can be used for early event prediction due to the ability of the SNN to spike early, before whole input vectors (they were trained on) are presented. A framework for building eSTDM called NeuCube along with a design methodology for building eSTDM using this are presented. The implementation of this framework in MATLAB, Java, and PyNN (Python) is presented. The latter facilitates the use of neuromorphic hardware platforms to run the eSTDM. Selected examples are given of eSTDM for pattern recognition and early event prediction on EEG data, fMRI data, multisensory seismic data, ecological data, climate data, audio-visual data. Future directions are discussed, including extension of the NeuCube framework for building neurogenetic eSTDM and also new applications of eSTDM

    Development of a machine learning based methodology for bridge health monitoring

    Tesi en modalitat de compendi de publicacionsIn recent years the scientific community has been developing new techniques in structural health monitoring (SHM) to identify the damages in civil structures specially in bridges. The bridge health monitoring (BHM) systems serve to reduce overall life-cycle maintenance costs for bridges, as their main objective is to prevent catastrophic failures and damages. In the BHM using dynamic data, there are several problems related to the post-processing of the vibration signals such as: (i) when the modal-based dynamic features like natural frequencies, modes shape and damping are used, they present a limitation in relation to damage location, since they are based on a global response of the structure; (ii) presence of noise in the measurement of vibration responses; (iii) inadequate use of existing algorithms for damage feature extraction because of neglecting the non-linearity and non-stationarity of the recorded signals; (iv) environmental and operational conditions can also generate false damage detections in bridges; (v) the drawbacks of traditional algorithms for processing large amounts of data obtained from the BHM. This thesis proposes new vibration-based parameters and methods with focus on damage detection, localization and quantification, considering a mixed robust methodology that includes signal processing and machine learning methods to solve the identified problems. The increasing volume of bridge monitoring data makes it interesting to study the ability of advanced tools and systems to extract useful information from dynamic and static variables. In the field of Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), powerful algorithms have been developed to face problems where the amount of data is much larger (big data). The possibilities of ML techniques (unsupervised algorithms) were analyzed here in bridges taking into account both operational and environmental conditions. A critical literature review was performed and a deep study of the accuracy and performance of a set of algorithms for detecting damage in three real bridges and one numerical model. In the literature review inherent to the vibration-based damage detection, several state-of-the-art methods have been studied that do not consider the nature of the data and the characteristics of the applied excitation (possible non-linearity, non-stationarity, presence or absence of environmental and/or operational effects) and the noise level of the sensors. Besides, most research uses modal-based damage characteristics that have some limitations. A poor data normalization is performed by the majority of methods and both operational and environmental variability is not properly accounted for. Likewise, the huge amount of data recorded requires automatic procedures with proven capacity to reduce the possibility of false alarms. On the other hand, many investigations have limitations since only numerical or laboratory cases are studied. Therefore, a methodology is proposed by the combination of several algorithms to avoid them. The conclusions show a robust methodology based on ML algorithms capable to detect, localize and quantify damage. It allows the engineers to verify bridges and anticipate significant structural damage when occurs. Moreover, the proposed non-modal parameters show their feasibility as damage features using ambient and forced vibrations. Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) in conjunction with Marginal Hilbert Spectrum and Instantaneous Phase Difference shows a great capability to analyze the nonlinear and nonstationary response signals for damage identification under operational conditions. The proposed strategy combines algorithms for signal processing (ICEEMDAN and HHT) and ML (k-means) to conduct damage detection and localization in bridges by using the traffic-induced vibration data in real-time operation.En los últimos años la comunidad científica ha desarrollado nuevas técnicas en monitoreo de salud estructural (SHM) para identificar los daños en estructuras civiles especialmente en puentes. Los sistemas de monitoreo de puentes (BHM) sirven para reducir los costos generales de mantenimiento del ciclo de vida, ya que su principal objetivo es prevenir daños y fallas catastróficas. En el BHM que utiliza datos dinámicos, existen varios problemas relacionados con el procesamiento posterior de las señales de vibración, tales como: (i) cuando se utilizan características dinámicas modales como frecuencias naturales, formas de modos y amortiguamiento, presentan una limitación en relación con la localización del daño, ya que se basan en una respuesta global de la estructura; (ii) presencia de ruido en la medición de las respuestas de vibración; (iii) uso inadecuado de los algoritmos existentes para la extracción de características de daño debido a la no linealidad y la no estacionariedad de las señales registradas; (iv) las condiciones ambientales y operativas también pueden generar falsas detecciones de daños en los puentes; (v) los inconvenientes de los algoritmos tradicionales para procesar grandes cantidades de datos obtenidos del BHM. Esta tesis propone nuevos parámetros y métodos basados en vibraciones con enfoque en la detección, localización y cuantificación de daños, considerando una metodología robusta que incluye métodos de procesamiento de señales y aprendizaje automático. El creciente volumen de datos de monitoreo de puentes hace que sea interesante estudiar la capacidad de herramientas y sistemas avanzados para extraer información útil de variables dinámicas y estáticas. En el campo del Machine Learning (ML) y la Inteligencia Artificial (IA) se han desarrollado potentes algoritmos para afrontar problemas donde la cantidad de datos es mucho mayor (big data). Aquí se analizaron las posibilidades de las técnicas ML (algoritmos no supervisados) teniendo en cuenta tanto las condiciones operativas como ambientales. Se realizó una revisión crítica de la literatura y se llevó a cabo un estudio profundo de la precisión y el rendimiento de un conjunto de algoritmos para la detección de daños en tres puentes reales y un modelo numérico. En la revisión de literatura se han estudiado varios métodos que no consideran la naturaleza de los datos y las características de la excitación aplicada (posible no linealidad, no estacionariedad, presencia o ausencia de efectos ambientales y/u operativos) y el nivel de ruido de los sensores. Además, la mayoría de las investigaciones utilizan características de daño modales que tienen algunas limitaciones. Estos métodos realizan una normalización deficiente de los datos y no se tiene en cuenta la variabilidad operativa y ambiental. Asimismo, la gran cantidad de datos registrados requiere de procedimientos automáticos para reducir la posibilidad de falsas alarmas. Por otro lado, muchas investigaciones tienen limitaciones ya que solo se estudian casos numéricos o de laboratorio. Por ello, se propone una metodología mediante la combinación de varios algoritmos. Las conclusiones muestran una metodología robusta basada en algoritmos de ML capaces de detectar, localizar y cuantificar daños. Permite a los ingenieros verificar puentes y anticipar daños estructurales. Además, los parámetros no modales propuestos muestran su viabilidad como características de daño utilizando vibraciones ambientales y forzadas. La Transformada de Hilbert-Huang (HHT) junto con el Espectro Marginal de Hilbert y la Diferencia de Fase Instantánea muestran una gran capacidad para analizar las señales de respuesta no lineales y no estacionarias para la identificación de daños en condiciones operativas. La estrategia propuesta combina algoritmos para el procesamiento de señales (ICEEMDAN y HHT) y ML (k-means) para detectar y localizar daños en puentes mediante el uso de datos de vibraciones inducidas por el tráfico en tiempo real.Postprint (published version

    Temporal models for mining, ranking and recommendation in the Web

    Due to their first-hand, diverse and evolution-aware reflection of nearly all areas of life, heterogeneous temporal datasets i.e., the Web, collaborative knowledge bases and social networks have been emerged as gold-mines for content analytics of many sorts. In those collections, time plays an essential role in many crucial information retrieval and data mining tasks, such as from user intent understanding, document ranking to advanced recommendations. There are two semantically closed and important constituents when modeling along the time dimension, i.e., entity and event. Time is crucially served as the context for changes driven by happenings and phenomena (events) that related to people, organizations or places (so-called entities) in our social lives. Thus, determining what users expect, or in other words, resolving the uncertainty confounded by temporal changes is a compelling task to support consistent user satisfaction. In this thesis, we address the aforementioned issues and propose temporal models that capture the temporal dynamics of such entities and events to serve for the end tasks. Specifically, we make the following contributions in this thesis: (1) Query recommendation and document ranking in the Web - we address the issues for suggesting entity-centric queries and ranking effectiveness surrounding the happening time period of an associated event. In particular, we propose a multi-criteria optimization framework that facilitates the combination of multiple temporal models to smooth out the abrupt changes when transitioning between event phases for the former and a probabilistic approach for search result diversification of temporally ambiguous queries for the latter. (2) Entity relatedness in Wikipedia - we study the long-term dynamics of Wikipedia as a global memory place for high-impact events, specifically the reviving memories of past events. Additionally, we propose a neural network-based approach to measure the temporal relatedness of entities and events. The model engages different latent representations of an entity (i.e., from time, link-based graph and content) and use the collective attention from user navigation as the supervision. (3) Graph-based ranking and temporal anchor-text mining inWeb Archives - we tackle the problem of discovering important documents along the time-span ofWeb Archives, leveraging the link graph. Specifically, we combine the problems of relevance, temporal authority, diversity and time in a unified framework. The model accounts for the incomplete link structure and natural time lagging in Web Archives in mining the temporal authority. (4) Methods for enhancing predictive models at early-stage in social media and clinical domain - we investigate several methods to control model instability and enrich contexts of predictive models at the “cold-start” period. We demonstrate their effectiveness for the rumor detection and blood glucose prediction cases respectively. Overall, the findings presented in this thesis demonstrate the importance of tracking these temporal dynamics surround salient events and entities for IR applications. We show that determining such changes in time-based patterns and trends in prevalent temporal collections can better satisfy user expectations, and boost ranking and recommendation effectiveness over time

    Automatic vehicle detection and tracking in aerial video

    This thesis is concerned with the challenging tasks of automatic and real-time vehicle detection and tracking from aerial video. The aim of this thesis is to build an automatic system that can accurately localise any vehicles that appear in aerial video frames and track the target vehicles with trackers. Vehicle detection and tracking have many applications and this has been an active area of research during recent years; however, it is still a challenge to deal with certain realistic environments. This thesis develops vehicle detection and tracking algorithms which enhance the robustness of detection and tracking beyond the existing approaches. The basis of the vehicle detection system proposed in this thesis has different object categorisation approaches, with colour and texture features in both point and area template forms. The thesis also proposes a novel Self-Learning Tracking and Detection approach, which is an extension to the existing Tracking Learning Detection (TLD) algorithm. There are a number of challenges in vehicle detection and tracking. The most difficult challenge of detection is distinguishing and clustering the target vehicle from the background objects and noises. Under certain conditions, the images captured from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are also blurred; for example, turbulence may make the vehicle shake during flight. This thesis tackles these challenges by applying integrated multiple feature descriptors for real-time processing. In this thesis, three vehicle detection approaches are proposed: the HSV-GLCM feature approach, the ISM-SIFT feature approach and the FAST-HoG approach. The general vehicle detection approaches used have highly flexible implicit shape representations. They are based on training samples in both positive and negative sets and use updated classifiers to distinguish the targets. It has been found that the detection results attained by using HSV-GLCM texture features can be affected by blurring problems; the proposed detection algorithms can further segment the edges of the vehicles from the background. Using the point descriptor feature can solve the blurring problem, however, the large amount of information contained in point descriptors can lead to processing times that are too long for real-time applications. So the FAST-HoG approach combining the point feature and the shape feature is proposed. This new approach is able to speed up the process that attains the real-time performance. Finally, a detection approach using HoG with the FAST feature is also proposed. The HoG approach is widely used in object recognition, as it has a strong ability to represent the shape vector of the object. However, the original HoG feature is sensitive to the orientation of the target; this method improves the algorithm by inserting the direction vectors of the targets. For the tracking process, a novel tracking approach was proposed, an extension of the TLD algorithm, in order to track multiple targets. The extended approach upgrades the original system, which can only track a single target, which must be selected before the detection and tracking process. The greatest challenge to vehicle tracking is long-term tracking. The target object can change its appearance during the process and illumination and scale changes can also occur. The original TLD feature assumed that tracking can make errors during the tracking process, and the accumulation of these errors could cause tracking failure, so the original TLD proposed using a learning approach in between the tracking and the detection by adding a pair of inspectors (positive and negative) to constantly estimate errors. This thesis extends the TLD approach with a new detection method in order to achieve multiple-target tracking. A Forward and Backward Tracking approach has been proposed to eliminate tracking errors and other problems such as occlusion. The main purpose of the proposed tracking system is to learn the features of the targets during tracking and re-train the detection classifier for further processes. This thesis puts particular emphasis on vehicle detection and tracking in different extreme scenarios such as crowed highway vehicle detection, blurred images and changes in the appearance of the targets. Compared with currently existing detection and tracking approaches, the proposed approaches demonstrate a robust increase in accuracy in each scenario
