The state of semantic technology today - overview of the first SEALS evaluation campaigns

    Get PDF
This paper describes the first five SEALS Evaluation Campaigns over the semantic technologies covered by the SEALS project (ontology engineering tools, ontology reasoning tools, ontology matching tools, semantic search tools, and semantic web service tools). It presents the evaluations and test data used in these campaigns and the tools that participated in them along with a comparative analysis of their results. It also presents some lessons learnt after the execution of the evaluation campaigns and draws some final conclusions

omap: An implemented framework for automatically aligning owl ontologies

    Get PDF
Abstract. This paper introduces oMAP, a method and a tool for automatically aligning OWL ontologies, a crucial step for achieving the interoperability of heterogeneous systems in the Semantic Web. Different components are combined for finding suitable mapping candidates (together with their weights), and the set of rules with maximum matching probability is selected. Terminological, machine learning-based classifiers and a new classifier using the structure and the semantics of the OWL ontologies are proposed. Our method has been implemented and evaluated on an independent test set provided by the ontology alignment evaluation initiative (OAEI). We provide the results of this evaluation for the various contests with respect to the other competitors

SemQuaRE - An extension of the SQuaRE quality model for the evaluation of semantic technologies

    Get PDF
To correctly evaluate semantic technologies and to obtain results that can be easily integrated, we need to put evaluations under the scope of a unique software quality model. This paper presents SemQuaRE, a quality model for semantic technologies. SemQuaRE is based on the SQuaRE standard and describes a set of quality characteristics specific to semantic technologies and the quality measures that can be used for their measurement. It also provides detailed formulas for the calculation of such measures. The paper shows that SemQuaRE is complete with respect to current evaluation trends and that it has been successfully applied in practice

Ontology-based Approximate Query Processing for Searching the Semantic Web with Corese

    Get PDF
The semantic web relies on ontologies representing domains through their main concepts and the relations between them. Such a domain knowledge is the keystone to represent the semantic contents of web resources and services in metadata associated to them. These metadata then enable us to search for information based on the semantics of web resources rather than their syntactic forms. However, in the context of the semantic web there are many possibilities of executing queries that would not retrieve any resource. The viewpoints of the designers of ontologies, of the designers of annotations and of the users performing a Web search may not completely match. The user may not completely share or understand the viewpoints of the designers and this mismatch may lead to missed answers. Approximate query processing is then of prime importance for efficiently searching the Semantic Web. In this paper we present the Corese ontology-based search engine we have developped to handle RDF(S) and OWL Lite metadata. We present its theoretical foundation, its query language, and we stress its ability to process approximate queries

    0002/2008 - Gestão de Ontologias

    Get PDF

    Ontology evolution: a process-centric survey

    Get PDF
Ontology evolution aims at maintaining an ontology up to date with respect to changes in the domain that it models or novel requirements of information systems that it enables. The recent industrial adoption of Semantic Web techniques, which rely on ontologies, has led to the increased importance of the ontology evolution research. Typical approaches to ontology evolution are designed as multiple-stage processes combining techniques from a variety of fields (e.g., natural language processing and reasoning). However, the few existing surveys on this topic lack an in-depth analysis of the various stages of the ontology evolution process. This survey extends the literature by adopting a process-centric view of ontology evolution. Accordingly, we first provide an overall process model synthesized from an overview of the existing models in the literature. Then we survey the major approaches to each of the steps in this process and conclude on future challenges for techniques aiming to solve that particular stage
