ELAN development, keeping pace with communities' needs

    Get PDF
ELAN is a versatile multimedia annotation tool that is being developed at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics. About a decade ago it emerged out of a number of corpus tools and utilities and it has been extended ever since. This paper focuses on the efforts made to ensure that the application keeps up with the growing needs of that era in linguistics and multimodality research; growing needs in terms of length and resolution of recordings, the number of recordings made and transcribed and the number of levels of annotation per transcription

This working paper was prepared for the workshop on "Aid and Humanitarian Assistance in Africa" held in Arusha in 1998. It is based on a series of interviews with aid agencies operating in Somalia after the crisis of 1992-1993, it tries to map out how different agencies reacted in a state-less society.Dokumentigan waxaa loo diyaariyay seminaar ku saabsan "gargaarka iyo samafalka la siiyo Afrika", oo lagu qabtay Arusha 1998. Local Case Management Teams: A Case Study of a Whole Approach to Ninth Grade Intervention for Students at Risk for High School Dropout

    Get PDF
Based on existing empirical research, schools continue to use single intervention programs for intervening on behalf of at-risk students despite the fact that those programs do not meet with significant success in decreasing dropout rates. The problem is that the phenomenon of multidimensional approaches to intervening on behalf of ninth-grade students has yet to be explored and understood. The purpose of this single case study was to describe the critical case of Local Case Management Teams utilizing a multidimensional approach to intervening on behalf of at-risk ninth grade students in a large suburban school district in Utah. The following research question guided this study: How do local case management teams describe their experiences in ninth-grade intervention/dropout prevention? The theory that guided this study was Communities of Practice by Lave and Wegner (1991) as it explains the relationship between Communities of Practice and Local Case Management Teams. A single case study design was utilized to provide an in-depth analysis of this critical case, bounded by time and activity, and using a variety of data collection procedures and analysis strategies over a sustained period. The participants were chosen using purposeful sampling. Data included interviews, observation, and document analysis and were analyzed using traditional case study analysis methods including memoing, pattern matching, within-case synthesis, and resulted in the development of several themes. Time, accountability, knowledge, escalating intrinsic and extrinsic barriers to success, and multidimensional programming were identified as central themes to this research. Although the participants reported differing experiences, their responses to this type of programming was overwhelmingly positive

Integrating Community and Ecosystem-Based Approaches in Climate Change Adaptation Responses

This paper is the result of extensive discussions led by adaptation professionals coming from different backgrounds and facilitated by the Ecosystem and Livelihoods Adaptation Network (ELAN).ii ELAN is an innovative alliance between two conservation organisations (International Union for the Conservation of Nature [IUCN] and WWF) and two development organisations (CARE International and the International Institute for Environment and Development [IIED]). The objective of ELAN is to establish a global network to develop, evaluate, synthesize and share successful strategies for adapting to climate change, build capacity for such strategies to be assessed and implemented at national and sub-national levels, and advance policies and knowledge sharing platforms that will facilitate the scaling up of effective strategies.UCR::Vicerrectoría de Docencia::Ciencias Sociales::Facultad de Ciencias Sociales::Escuela de Geografí

The Impact Of Translation On Constructed Action and Constructed Dialogue In ASL Texts

    Get PDF
Depiction, a phenomenon similar to iconicity, involves representing what something âlooks like or is likeâ (Streeck 2008:289). Because depiction is used more heavily in sign languages than spoken languages (Dudis 2007), people interpreting or translating spoken/written texts into signed languages struggle to use depiction naturally (Thumann 2011). This thesis analyzes constructed action (CA) and constructed dialogue (CD), two types of depiction in which the signerâs hands represent those of a discourse participant. Using Tannen (1989) & Metzgerâs (1995) framework of non-directly-quoted CACD and Quinto-Pozos & Mehtaâs (2010) degrees of CA, I examine differences between narratives originally composed in ASL and narrative segments from Genesis and Exodus that have been translated into ASL, all of which were signed by Deaf users of ASL. This analysis indicates that translated texts are slower and use less non-directly-quoted CD than non-translated texts. Measuring depiction can improve the naturalness of these and other translations

The effects of the design and development of a chemistry curriculum reform on teachers’ professional growth: a case study

    Get PDF
A curriculum innovation requires new learning material for students and a preparation program for teachers, in which teacher learning is a key ingredient. In this paper we describe how three experienced teachers, involved in the development and subsequent classroom enactment of student learning material for context-based chemistry education, professionalized. For data collection a questionnaire, three interviews and discussion transcripts were used. Our results show that: (a) teachers, cooperating in a network under supervision of an expert, can develop innovative learning material; (b) the development of learning material can be seen as a powerful program to prepare teachers for an innovation; and (c) teachers’ knowledge increased in all five pedagogical content knowledge domains during the development and class enactment phases
