In response to the impending international maritime regulation, MARPOL Annex VI Reg. 14, to curb sulphur oxides (SOx) arising from shipping activities, this paper aimed to evaluate the environmental impacts of the entire life cycle of three different SOx reduction scrubber systems: (1) ‘wet open-loop’, (2) ‘wet closed-loop’, and (3) ‘wet hybrid’. To achieve this goal, the paper developed ‘the Parametric Trend Life Cycle Assessment (PT-LCA)’ which was introduced to proceed the extensive analysis for a number of case ship studies and quantify various emissions, such as greenhouse gases (GHG), sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), associated with the proposed systems from cradle to grave. A case study designed with the database consisting of 1,565 ocean-going Ro-Ro vessels based on Lloyd’s Register has revealed that, in terms of Global Warming Potential (GWP) and Acidification Potential (AP), closed-loop scrubbers were proven more environmentally friendly than open-loop scrubbers, but the opposite was true for Eutrophication Potential (EP). By identifying specific trends in scrubber systems in relation to various input parameters, the assessment contributed to improving environmental sustainability, as well as the total estimated amount of numerical environmental impacts that the scrubber systems have for the international fleets. The proposed framework enabled us not only to evaluate the different emission levels of systems applied to various ships but also to obtain the general trends of emission levels over ship parameters, which were expressed as formulae. The novelty of this paper can be placed on the provision of an insight into the optimal selection of scrubber systems depending on ship characteristics. It could also offer an insight into the improvement of current environmental regulations and guidelines by means of PT-LCA

On the last decades the research of design solutions for wind energy generation systems have been growing and former barriers such as the sea have been broken. Design alternatives such as offshore wind turbines that until the end of last century were not known, today provide an array of mature projects that are in full operation. The current work presents the design of a floating offshore wind turbine supported by an TLP floating structure, the design criteria and the associated analysis the verify those criteria. The TLP floating structure is composed of three pontoons and on main column, the wind turbine selected for the design is the DTU 10MW turbine. For the hydrodynamic analysis the Ansys AQWA software have been considered and for the aerodynamics analysis the Aerodyn software from NREL has been used. Assessing the pre-established design criteria compliance through the results of the various analyses performed, it was possible to obtain a deeper understanding of the global behavior of a TLP type floating offshore wind turbine for the environmental cases proposed.

THE REPRESENTATION OF TRAUMATIC REALISM IN THE EARLY NOVELS OF MARTÍN CAPARRÓS

The Spanish expression haciendo memoria is almost always translated as remembering. I chose the literal translation making memory because it more adequately describes the task of mourning that takes place when dealing with trauma. Psychology tells us that when a traumatic event occurs, only a non-narrative imprint of an event is recorded--seared--in the mind, and the narrative form must be created. Only then can it be mentally manipulated and even communicated and --in both a literal and literary sense-- made history. The trauma explored in this study is centered on the dirty war in Argentina of the 1970’s and 1980’s. This period is usually framed as the excessively brutal and violent extermination of armed rebels by the last Argentine military dictatorship (March 1976-December 1983). But this emplotment of history does not adequately explain the origins or the severity of the violence. In part, it is this narrative deficit which keeps the trauma fresh in the Argentine collective consciousness. There is an overwhelming wealth of information about this period; yet the traditional models for framing history do not seem to suit the data nor do they fully capture the ethos. They are like loose characters and events searching for a story in which to belong or a narrative to call home. Part of the mourning process is the creation of emplotments and narrative structures which can make sense –make memory—of the dirty war. This dissertation focuses on the early narrative of Martín Caparrόs, one of the narrative voices ‘making memory’ of this time period. In my dissertation I will explore his first three novels against the backdrop of Michael Rothberg’s study “Traumatic Realism”, which identifies three dimensions of the representation of traumatic history: a demand for documentation, a demand for reflection on the limits of representation, and a demand for engagement with the public sphere. I will disentangle Caparrόs’ complex narrative techniques in order to uncover his early struggle with these three demands, as he attempts to create his own constellation of meaning

This work takes place in the framework of the processing of environment for training using virtual reality. More particularly, it integrates the MASCARET project (Multi Agent System for Collaborative and Realistic Environment for Training). The objective is to develop a virtual environment for training dedicated to collaborative and procedural work.In this context, we defend the thesis that it is possible to integrate a generic and adaptive Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) in a virtual environment, in order to provide pedagogical aid for the learner and pedagogical assistance for the trainer. This thesis begins with a study showing the interest of virtual reality and ITS for the acquisition of competences and identifies their difficulties. More particularly, it shows up the necessity of an abstract representation, independent of the exercise to realize, manipulable for pedagogical decision making and connected to the representation of a 3D universe. Our proposal is a multi-agent system allowing to analyse the action realized by the learner using an informed virtual environment. The system highlights a set of information, called pedagogical situation, considered relevant to make pedagogical decision. Then, our study is focused on a pedagogical agent. It suggests assistance to the trainer using the pedagogical situation. The abstraction used allows concrete assistance linked to the domain, to the exercise and to the virtual environment. The behavioural model of the pedagogical agent is based on a hierarchical classifiers system. Thanks to this model, the agent adapts itself to the trainer-learner pair, modifying its pedagogical behaviour by the way of an artificial learning mechanism based on a reinforcement provided by the trainer. This work is applied to the GASPAR project. The application simulates the plane activity on an aircraft-carrier.

Burn your way to success: studies in the Mesopotamian ritual and incantation series Šurpu

    Get PDF
The ritual and incantation series Šurpu ‘Burning’ is one of the most important sources for understanding religious and magical practice in the ancient Near East. The purpose of the ritual was to rid a sufferer of a divine curse which had been inflicted due to personal misconduct. The series is composed chiefly of the text of the incantations recited during the ceremony. These are supplemented by brief ritual instructions as well as a ritual tablet which details the ceremony in full. This thesis offers a comprehensive and radical reconstruction of the entire text, demonstrating the existence of a large, and previously unsuspected, lacuna in the published version. In addition, a single tablet, tablet IX, from the ten which comprise the series is fully edited, with partitur transliteration, eclectic and normalised text, translation, and a detailed line by line commentary
