    Enabling Multi-Mission Interoperable UAS Using Data-Centric Communications

    We claim the strong potential of data-centric communications in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), as a suitable paradigm to enhance collaborative operations via efficient information sharing, as well as to build systems supporting flexible mission objectives. In particular, this paper analyzes the primary contributions to data dissemination in UAS that can be given by the Data Distribution Service (DDS) open standard, as a solid and industry-mature data-centric technology. Our study is not restricted to traditional UAS where a set of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) transmit data to the ground station that controls them. Instead, we contemplate flexible UAS deployments with multiple UAV units of different sizes and capacities, which are interconnected to form an aerial communication network, enabling the provision of value-added services over a delimited geographical area. In addition, the paper outlines an approach to address the issues inherent to the utilization of network-level multicast, a baseline technology in DDS, in the considered UAS deployments. We complete our analysis with a practical experience aiming at validating the feasibility and the advantages of using DDS in a multi-UAV deployment scenario. For this purpose, we use a UAS testbed built up by heterogeneous hardware equipment, including a number of interconnected micro aerial vehicles, carrying single board computers as payload, as well as real equipment from a tactical UAS from the Spanish Ministry of Defense.This article was partially supported by the European H2020 5GRANGE project (grant agreement 777137), and by the 5GCity project (TEC2016-76795-C6-3-R) funded by the SpanishMinistry of Economy and Competitiveness

    Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is a collection of two or more devices or nodes or terminals with wireless communications and networking capability that communicate with each other without the aid of any centralized administrator also the wireless nodes that can dynamically form a network to exchange information without using any existing fixed network infrastructure.     Hastily Formed Networks (HFN) As an Enabler for the Emergency Response Community

    The effects of natural or manmade disasters in communications infrastructures are so severe that immediately after the disaster the emergency responders are unable to use them. In addition, some areas do not have any useful infrastructure at all. To bridge this gap in communications, a need exists for a reliable technology not dependent on the existing infrastructure. This thesis focuses on first identifying the problem of communications gaps during natural or manmade disasters and reviewing the impact and potential benefit of implementing a solution based on the Hastily Formed Networks (HFN) model. The research explores the different technological solutions to solve this problem by evaluating documentation for commercial off-the-shelf technologies (COTS). Additionally, the thesis reviews the results of field experimentation conducted to evaluate the performance of these technologies in the field. The ultimate goal is to introduce the HFN concept as an enabler for the Emergency Response Community (ERC). Throughout this research, the focus revolves around testing COTS technologies.     Adoption of vehicular ad hoc networking protocols by networked robots

    This paper focuses on the utilization of wireless networking in the robotics domain. Many researchers have already equipped their robots with wireless communication capabilities, stimulated by the observation that multi-robot systems tend to have several advantages over their single-robot counterparts. Typically, this integration of wireless communication is tackled in a quite pragmatic manner, only a few authors presented novel Robotic Ad Hoc Network (RANET) protocols that were designed specifically with robotic use cases in mind. This is in sharp contrast with the domain of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET). This observation is the starting point of this paper. If the results of previous efforts focusing on VANET protocols could be reused in the RANET domain, this could lead to rapid progress in the field of networked robots. To investigate this possibility, this paper provides a thorough overview of the related work in the domain of robotic and vehicular ad hoc networks. Based on this information, an exhaustive list of requirements is defined for both types. It is concluded that the most significant difference lies in the fact that VANET protocols are oriented towards low throughput messaging, while RANET protocols have to support high throughput media streaming as well. Although not always with equal importance, all other defined requirements are valid for both protocols. This leads to the conclusion that cross-fertilization between them is an appealing approach for future RANET research. To support such developments, this paper concludes with the definition of an appropriate working plan

    MARGOT: Dynamic IoT Resource Discovery for HADR Environments

    Smart City services leverage sophisticated IT architectures whose assets are deployed in dynamic and heterogeneous computing and communication scenarios. Those services are particularly interesting for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations in urban environments, which could improve Situation Awareness by exploiting the Smart City IT infrastructure. To this end, an enabling requirement is the discovery of the available Internet-of-Things (IoT) resources, including sensors, actuators, services, and computing resources, based on a variety of criteria, such as geographical location, proximity, type of device, type of capability, coverage, resource availability, and communication topology / quality of network links. To date, no single standard has emerged that has been widely adopted to solve the discovery challenge. Instead, a variety of different standards have been proposed and cities have either adopted one that is convenient or reinvented a new standard just for themselves. Therefore, enabling discovery across different standards and administrative domains is a fundamental requirement to enable HADR operations in Smart Cities. To address these challenges, we developed MARGOT (Multi-domain Asynchronous Gateway Of Things), a comprehensive solution for resource discovery in Smart City environments that implements a distributed and federated architecture and supports a wide range of discovery protocols

    Security and Privacy Issues in Wireless Mesh Networks: A Survey

    This book chapter identifies various security threats in wireless mesh network (WMN). Keeping in mind the critical requirement of security and user privacy in WMNs, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of various possible attacks on different layers of the communication protocol stack for WMNs and their corresponding defense mechanisms. First, it identifies the security vulnerabilities in the physical, link, network, transport, application layers. Furthermore, various possible attacks on the key management protocols, user authentication and access control protocols, and user privacy preservation protocols are presented. After enumerating various possible attacks, the chapter provides a detailed discussion on various existing security mechanisms and protocols to defend against and wherever possible prevent the possible attacks. Comparative analyses are also presented on the security schemes with regards to the cryptographic schemes used, key management strategies deployed, use of any trusted third party, computation and communication overhead involved etc. The chapter then presents a brief discussion on various trust management approaches for WMNs since trust and reputation-based schemes are increasingly becoming popular for enforcing security in wireless networks.
