Dynamic Antenna Alignment Control in Microwave Air-Bridging for Sky-Net Mobile Communication Using Unmanned Flying Platform
This paper presents a preliminary study on establishing a mobile point-to-point (P2P) microwave air-bridging (MAB) between Unmanned Low Altitude Flying Platform (ULAFP) and backhaul telecommunication network. The proposed Sky-Net system relays telecom signal for general mobile cellphone users via ULAFP when natural disaster sweeps off Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs). Unlike the conventional fix point microwave bridging application, the ULAFP is cruising on a predefined mission flight path to cover a wider range of service. The difficulty and challenge fall on how to maintain antenna alignment accurately in order to provide the signal strength for MAB. A dual-axis rotation mechanism with embedded controller is designed and implemented on airborne and ground units for stabilizing airborne antenna and tracking the moving ULAFP. The MAB link is established in flight tests using the proposed antenna stabilizing/tracking mechanism with correlated control method. The result supports backbone technique of the Sky-Net mobile communication and verifies the feasibility of airborne e-Cell BTS
Radio Resource Management for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Assisted Wireless Communications and Networking
In recent years, employing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as aerial communication platforms or users is envisioned as a promising solution to enhance the performance of the existing wireless communication systems. However, applying UAVs for information technology applications also introduces many new challenges.
This thesis focuses on the UAV-assisted wireless communication and networking, and aims to address the challenges through exploiting and designing efficient radio resource management methods. Specifically, four research topics are studied in this thesis. Firstly, to address the constraint of network heterogeneity and leverage the benefits of diversity of UAVs, a hierarchical air-ground heterogeneous network architecture enabled by software defined networking is proposed, which integrates both high and low altitude platforms into conventional terrestrial networks to provide additional capacity enhancement and expand the coverage of current network systems. Secondly, to address the constraint of link disconnection and guarantee the reliable communications among UAVs as aerial user equipment to perform sensing tasks, a robust resource allocation scheme is designed while taking into account the dynamic features and different requirements for different UAV transmission connections. Thirdly, to address the constraint of privacy and security threat and motivate the spectrum sharing between cellular and UAV operators, a blockchain-based secure spectrum trading framework is constructed where mobile network operators and UAV operators can share spectrum in a distributed and trusted environment based on blockchain technology to protect users' privacy and data security. Fourthly, to address the constraint of low endurance of UAV and prolong its flight time as an aerial base station for delivering communication coverage in a disaster area, an energy efficiency maximization problem jointly optimizing user association, UAV's transmission power and trajectory is studied in which laser charging is exploited to supply sustainable energy to enable the UAV to operate in the sky for a long time

Optimisation of a propagation model for last mile connectivity with low altitude platforms using machine learning
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonOur related research review on propagation models reveals six factors that are significant in last mile connectivity via LAP: path loss, elevation angle, LAP altitude, coverage area, power consumption, operation frequency, interference, and antenna type. These factors can help with monitoring system performance, network planning, coverage footprint, receivers’ line-of-sight, quality of service requirements, and data rates which may all vary in response to geomorphology characteristics. Several competing propagation models have been proposed over the years but whilst they collectively raise many shortcomings such as limited altitude up to few tens of meters, lack of cover across different environments, low perdition accuracy they also exhibit several advantages. Four propagation models, which are representatives of their types, have been selected since they exhibit advantages in relation to high altitude, wide coverage range, adaption across different terrains. In addition, all four have been extensively deployed in the past and as a result their correction factors have evolved over the years to yield extremely accurate results which makes the development and evaluation aspects of this research very precise. The four models are: ITU-R P.529-3, Okumura, Hata-Davidson, and ATG. The aim of this doctoral research is to design a new propagation model for last-mile connectivity using LAPs technology as an alternative to aerial base station that includes all six factors but does not exhibit any of the shortcomings of existing models. The new propagation model evolves from existing models using machine learning. The four models are first adapted to include the elevation angle alongside the multiple-input multiple-output diversity gain, our first novelty in propagation modelling. The four adapted models are then used as input in a Neural Network framework and their parameters are clustered in a Self-Organizing-Map using a minimax technique. The framework evolves an optimal propagation model that represents the main research contribution of this research. The optimal propagation model is deployed in two proof-of-concept applications, a wireless sensor network, and a cellular structure. The performance of the optimal model is evaluated and then validated against that of the four adapted models first in relation to predictions reported in the literature and then in the context of the two proof-of-concept applications. The predictions of the optimised model are significantly improved in comparison to those of the four adapted propagation models. Signal classification at discrete frequencies using machine learning
Incidents such as the 2018 shut down of Gatwick Airport due to a small Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) airfield incursion, have shown that we don’t have routine and consistent detection and classification methods in place to recognise unwanted signals in an airspace. Today, incidents of this nature are taking place around the world regularly. The first stage in mitigating a threat is to know whether a threat is present. This thesis focuses on the detection and classification of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) jamming radio frequency (RF) signal types and small commercially available UAS RF signals using machine learning for early warning systems. RF signals can be computationally heavy and sometimes sensitive to collect. With neural networks requiring a lot of information to train from scratch, the thesis explores the use of transfer learning from the object detection field to lessen this burden by using graphical representations of the signal in the frequency and time domain. The thesis shows that utilising the benefits of transfer learning with both supervised and unsupervised learning and graphical signal representations, can provide high accuracy detection and classification, down to the fidelity of whether a small UAS is flying or stationary. By treating the classification of RF signals as an image classification problem, this thesis has shown that transfer learning through CNN feature extraction reduces the need for large datasets while still providing high accuracy results. CNN feature extraction and transfer learning was also shown to improve accuracy as a precursor to unsupervised learning but at a cost of time, while raw images provided a good overall solution for timely clustering. Lastly the thesis has shown that the implementation of machine learning models using a raspberry pi and software defined radio (SDR) provides a viable option for low cost early warning systems
EVAL mission requirements, phase 1
The aspects of NASA's applications mission were enhanced by utilization of shuttle/spacelab, and payload groupings which optimize the cost of achieving the mission goals were defined. Preliminary Earth Viewing Application Laboratory (EVAL) missions, experiments, sensors, and sensor groupings were developed. The major technological EVAL themes and objectives which NASA will be addressing during the 1980 to 2,000 time period were investigated. Missions/experiments which addressed technique development, sensor development, application development, and/or operational data collection were considered as valid roles for EVAL flights
