    Low-Cost Dual-Band Circularly Polarized Switched-Beam Array for Global Navigation Satellite System

    This paper presents the design and development of a dual-band switched-beam microstrip array for global navigation satellite system (GNSS) applications such as ocean reflectometry and remote sensing. In contrast to the traditional Butler matrix, a simple, low cost, broadband and low insertion loss beam switching feed network is proposed, designed and integrated with a dual band antenna array to achieve continuous beam coverage of ±25° around the boresight at the L1 (1.575 GHz) and L2 (1.227 GHz) bands. To reduce the cost, microstrip lines and PIN diode based switches are employed. The proposed switched-beam network is then integrated with dual-band step-shorted annular ring (S-SAR) antenna elements in order to produce a fully integrated compact-sized switched-beam array. Antenna simulation results show that the switched-beam array achieves a maximum gain of 12 dBic at the L1 band and 10 dBic at the L2 band. In order to validate the concept, a scaled down prototype of the simulated design is fabricated and measured. The prototype operates at twice of the original design frequency, i.e., 3.15 GHz and 2.454 GHz and the measured results confirm that the integrated array achieves beam switching and good performance at both bands

    Design and validation of a dual-band circular polarization patch antenna and stripline combiner for the FSSCat mission

    The FMPL-2 payload on board the 3Cat-5/A 6 Unit CubeSat, part of the FSSCat CubeSat mission, includes a dual L-Band Microwave Radiometer and a Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometer, in one instrument, implemented in a Software Defined Radio. One of the design challenges of this payload was its Nadir looking Antenna, which had to be directive (> 12 dB), dual-band at 1400–1427 MHz and 1575.42 MHz, left-hand circularly polarized, and with important envelope restrictions, notably with a low profile. After a trade-off analysis, the best design solution appeared to be an array of six elements each of them being a stacked dual-band patch antenna, with diagonal feed to create the circular polarization, and a six to one stripline combiner. The design process of the elementary antennas first includes a theoretical analysis, to obtain the approximate dimensions. Then, by means of numerical simulations, prototyping, and adjusting the results in the simulations, the manufacturing errors and dielectric constant tolerances, to which patch antennas are very sensitive, can be characterized. A similar approach is taken with the combiner.     GNSS-R altimetry performance analysis for the GEROS experiment on board the international space station

    The GEROS-ISS (GNSS rEflectometry, Radio Occultation and Scatterometry onboard International Space Station) is an innovative experiment for climate research, proposed in 2011 within a call of the European Space Agency (ESA). This proposal was the only one selected for further studies by ESA out of ~25 ones that were submitted. In this work, the instrument performance for the near-nadir altimetry (GNSS-R) mode is assessed, including the effects of multi-path in the ISS structure, the electromagnetic-bias, and the orbital height decay. In the absence of ionospheric scintillations, the altimetry rms error is 20 dB at equatorial regions, mainly after sunset, which will seriously degrade the altimetry and the scatterometry performances of the instrument.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Information retrieval from spaceborne GNSS Reflectometry observations using physics- and learning-based techniques

    This dissertation proposes a learning-based, physics-aware soil moisture (SM) retrieval algorithm for NASA’s Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) mission. The proposed methodology has been built upon the literature review, analyses, and findings from a number of published studies throughout the dissertation research. Namely, a Sig- nals of Opportunity Coherent Bistatic scattering model (SCoBi) has been first developed at MSU and then its simulator has been open-sourced. Simulated GNSS-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) analyses have been conducted by using SCoBi. Significant findings have been noted such that (1) Although the dominance of either the coherent reflections or incoher- ent scattering over land is a debate, we demonstrated that coherent reflections are stronger for flat and smooth surfaces covered by low-to-moderate vegetation canopy; (2) The influ- ence of several land geophysical parameters such as SM, vegetation water content (VWC), and surface roughness on the bistatic reflectivity was quantified, the dynamic ranges of reflectivity changes due to SM and VWC are much higher than the changes due to the surface roughness. Such findings of these analyses, combined with a comprehensive lit- erature survey, have led to the present inversion algorithm: Physics- and learning-based retrieval of soil moisture information from space-borne GNSS-R measurements that are taken by NASA’s CYGNSS mission. The study is the first work that proposes a machine learning-based, non-parametric, and non-linear regression algorithm for CYGNSS-based soil moisture estimation. The results over point-scale soil moisture observations demon- strate promising performance for applicability to large scales. Potential future work will be extension of the methodology to global scales by training the model with larger and diverse data sets

    GNSS Reflectometry for land surface monitoring and buried object detection

    Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) is attracting growing interest nowadays for several remote sensing applications. As a bistatic radar, the transmitter and the receiver are not co-located and in the special case of GNSS-R, the GNSS satellites are acting as transmitters and the receiver can be mounted either in a static position or onboard a aircraft or low orbit satellite. Various information about the surface from where the GNSS signals are reflected or scattered can be extracted by means of reflected signal strength, code delay, carrier phase delay, interference with direct GNSS signals and so on. Possible applications cover soil moisture retrieval, ice topography and thickness detection, snow depth estimation, vegetation coverage, sea state monitoring such as sea wind and surface roughness, sea salinity… In this work, soil moisture retrieval was mostly focused on. Hardware including antennas and receivers was studied and designed. Our first strategy of soil moisture retrieval is to apply a single Left Hand Circular Polarization (LHCP) antenna for reflected signal reception. Therefore multiple types of antennas such as the helix antenna, the patch antenna and several commercial antennas were designed, simulated or tested in the anechoic chamber. Two receiver solutions were used in our group and both of them apply the SiGe GPS frontend. The first solution is a PC based one: the collection and store of the raw incoming reflected GPS signals were done by the NGrab software (designed by NAVSAS Group of Politecnico di Torino) installed in a standard PC. The other solution was developed in our group and it is operated by a single Hackberry board, which consists of power supply, storage subsystem and customized Linux Debian operating system. The light weight and small size enable this compact receiver to perform flight measurement onboard UAVs. Both of the above mentioned receivers only store raw sampled data and no real time signal processing is performed on board. Post processing is done by Matlab program which makes correlations in both time and frequency domain with incoming signals using the local generated GPS C/A code replica. The so-called Delay Doppler Map (DDM) is therefore generated through this correlation. Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) can be calculated through Delay Waveform (DW) which is extracted from DDM at the Doppler frequency where the correlation peak exists. Received signal power can be obtained knowing the noise power which is given in a standard equation. In order to better plan a static measurement and to georeference specular points on the surface, programs for georeferencing specular points on either Google Maps or an x-y plane centered at the receiver position were developed. Fly dynamics in terms of roll, pitch and yaw influencing the antenna gain due to the variation of incident angles were also studied in order to compensate the gain to the received signal. Two soil moisture retrieval algorithms were derived corresponding to two receiving schemes. The first one is for the receiving of only LHCP reflected signals. In this case, the surface is assumed to be perfectly smooth and the received signal is seen to consist of only coherent component caused by specular reflection. Dielectric constant can be retrieved from the processed SNR. Two measurement campaigns were carried out using this single LHCP system. The first campaign is a flight measurement overflown a big portion of rice fields when most of the fields were flooded. It was a test measurement on the SNR sensitivity to water/no-water surfaces and an attempt of dielectric constant retrieval was also performed. SNR showed good sensitivity to the surface water content and dielectric constant was also checked to be reasonable. The second campaign is in static positions and it includes two experiments. This campaign initially aimed at testing the sensitivity of the compact receiver to different surface moisture. Results of both SNR and retrieved dielectric constant showed to be coherent with the surface moisture changes. The other retrieval algorithm is for the receiving of both LHCP and RHCP reflected signals concurrently. The cross polarization power ratio (LHCP/RHCP) is believed to be independent of surface roughness by several previous studies and this idea was also verified during the deriving process for either specular reflection case (only coherent component) or diffuse scattering condition (incoherent component). For diffuse scattering, three well known models were applied which are the Kirchhoff Approximation in stationary-phase approximation (Kirchhoff Geometrical Optics, KGO), Kirchhoff Approximation in Physical Optics Approximation (KPO) and Small Perturbation Method (SPM). These three models cover different roughness surfaces from very rough (KGO) to slightly rough surfaces (SPM). All the derived results of cross polarization ratio for the three models were verified to be independent of surface properties and depend on only dielectric constant of soil and incident angle. A new application of GNSS-R technique for the possibility of detection of buried objects was firstly investigated by our group. It has the potential use for man-made mines detection in the military field. Two measurement campaigns were carried out and the variation of the SNR level due to the presence of a metallic object was investigated. The first measurement campaign was performed in a static condition on a sandy terrain to check the functionality of the system. And the presence of the metallic object was detected also in the case of wet terrain. In the second measurement campaign, the antenna was moving along a given path and the possibility of detecting the object dimensions was highlighted. The results show the possibility of adopting this technique on board a remotely controlled UAV for metal object and even its dimension detection. A measurement of snow depth attempting to relate it to reflected LHCP SNR is briefly presented and discussed in Chapter 7

    Chapter Antennas for Space Applications: A Review

    It is well known that antennas are inevitable for wireless communication systems. After the launch of Sputnik-1 which was the first artificial satellite developed by USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), telecommunication technologies started to develop for space excessively. However, significance of the antennas as first or final RF-front end element has not been altered for the space communication systems. In this chapter, after introducing telecommunication and antenna technologies for space, which space environmental conditions are to be faced by these antennas are summarized. Then, frequency allocation that is a crucial design factor for antennas is explained and tabulated. And finally at the last part, different types of antennas used in different space missions are presented with their functional parameters and tasks

    Space-Air-Ground Integrated 6G Wireless Communication Networks: A Review of Antenna Technologies and Application Scenarios

    A review of technological solutions and advances in the framework of a Vertical Heterogeneous Network (VHetNet) integrating satellite, airborne and terrestrial networks is presented. The disruptive features and challenges offered by a fruitful cooperation among these segments within a ubiquitous and seamless wireless connectivity are described. The available technologies and the key research directions for achieving global wireless coverage by considering all these layers are thoroughly discussed. Emphasis is placed on the available antenna systems in satellite, airborne and ground layers by highlighting strengths and weakness and by providing some interesting trends in research. A summary of the most suitable applicative scenarios for future 6G wireless communications are finally illustrated

    Advanced GNSS-R instruments for altimetric and scatterometric applications

    This work is the result of more than eight years during a bachelor thesis, a master thesis, and the Ph.D. thesis dedicated to the development of the Microwave Interferometric Reflectometer (MIR) instrument. It summarizes all the knowledge acquired during this time, and describes the MIR instrument as detailed as possible. MIR is a Global Navigation Satellite System - Reflectometer (GNSS-R), that is, an instrument that uses Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals scattered on the Earth's surface to retrieve geophysical parameters. These signals are received below the noise level, but since they have been spread in the frequency domain using spread-spectrum techniques, and in particular using the so-called Pseudo Random Noise (PRN) codes, it is still possible to retrieve them because of the large correlation gain achieved. In GNSS-R, two main techniques are used for this purpose: the conventional technique cGNSS-R and the interferometric one iGNSS-R, each with its pros and cons. In the former technique, the reflected signal is cross-correlated against a locally generated clean-replica of the transmitted signal. In the latter technique the reflected signal is cross-correlated with the direct one. Nowadays multiple GNSS systems coexist, transmitting narrow and wide, open and private signals. A comparison between systems, signals, and techniques in fair conditions is necessary. The MIR instrument has been designed as an airborne instrument for that purpose: the instrument has two arrays, an up-looking one, and a down-looking one, each with 19 dual-band antennas in a hexagonal distribution. The instrument is able to form 2 beams at each frequency band (L1/E1, and L5/E5A), which are pointing continuously to the desired satellites taking into account their position, as well as the instrument's position and attitude. The data is sampled and stored for later post-processing. Last but not least, MIR is auto-calibrated using similar signals to the ones transmitted by the GNSS satellites. During the instrument development, the Distance Measurement Equipment/TACtical Air Navigation (DME/TACAN) signals from the Barcelona airport threatened to disrupt the interferometric technique. These signals were also studied, and it was concluded that the use of a mitigation systems were as strongly recommended. The interferometric technique was also affected by the unwanted contribution of other satellites. The impact of these contributions was studied using real data gathered during this Ph.D. thesis. During these 8 years, the instrument was designed, built, tested, and calibrated. A field campaign was carried out in Australia between May 2018 and June 2018 to determine the instrument's accuracy in sensing soil moisture and sea altimetry. This work describes each of these steps in detail and aims to be helpful for those who decide to continue the legacy of this instrument.Este trabajo es el resultado de más de 8 años de doctorado dedicados al desarrollo del instrumento Microwave Interferometric Reflectometer (MIR). Esta tesis resume todo el conocimiento adquirido durante este tiempo, y describe el MIR lo más detalladamente posible. El MIR es un Reflectómetro de señales de Sistemas Globales de Navegación por Satélite (GNSS-R), es decir, es un instrumento que usa señales de GNSS reflejadas en la superficie de la tierra para obtener parámetros geofísicos. Estas señales son recibidas bajo el nivel de ruido, pero dado que han sido ensanchadas en el dominio frecuencial usando técnicas de espectro ensanchado, y en particular usando códigos Pseudo Random Noise (PRN), es todavía posible recibirlas debido a la elevada ganancia de correlación. En GNSS-R existen dos técnicas para este propósito: la convencional (cGNSS-R), y la interferométrica (iGNSS-R), cada una con sus pros y sus contras. En la primera se calcula la correlación cruzada de la señal reflejada y de una réplica generada del código transmitido. En la segunda técnica se calcula la correlación cruzada de la señal reflejada y de la señal directa. Hoy en día muchos sistemas GNSS coexisten, transmitiendo señales de distintos anchos de banda, algunas públicas y otras privadas. Una comparación entre sistemas, señales, y técnicas en condiciones justas es necesaria. El MIR es un instrumento aerotransportado diseñado como para ese propósito: el instrumento tiene dos arrays de antenas, uno apuntando al cielo, y otro apuntando al suelo, cada uno con 19 antenas doble banda en una distribución hexagonal. El instrumento puede formar 2 haces en cada banda frecuencial (L1/E1 y L5/E5A) que apuntan continuamente a los satélites deseados teniendo en cuenta su posición, y la posición y actitud del instrumento. Los datos son guardados para ser procesados posteriormente. Por último pero no menos importante, el MIR se calibra usando señales similares a las transmitidas por los satélites de GNSS. Durante el desarrollo del instrumento, señales del sistema Distance Measuremt Equi Distance Measurement Equipment/TACtical Air Navigation (DME/TACAN) del aeropuerto de Barcelona mostraron ser una amenaza para la técnica interferométrica. Estas señales fueron estudiadas y se concluyó que era encarecidamente recomendado el uso de sistemas de mitigación de interferencias. La técnica interferométrica también se ve afectada por las contribuciones no deseadas de otros satélites, llamado cross-talk. El impacto del cross-talk fue estudiado usando datos reales tomados durante esta tesis doctoral. A lo largo de estos 8 años el instrumento ha sido diseñado, construido, testeado y calibrado. Una campaña de medidas fue llevada a cabo en Australia entre Mayo de 2018 y Junio de 2018 para determinar la capacidad del instrumento para estimar la humedad del terreno y la altura del mar. Este documento describe cada uno de estos pasos al detalle y espera resultar útil para aquellos que decidan continuar con el legado de este instrumento.Postprint (published version
