    Driver drowsiness detection based on respiratory signal analysis

    Drowsy driving is a prevalent and serious public health issue that deserves attention. Recent studies estimate around 20% of car crashes have been caused by drowsy drivers. Nowadays, one of the main goals in the development of new advanced driver assistance systems is the trustworthy drowsiness detection. In this paper, a drowsiness detection method based on changes in the respiratory signal is proposed. The respiratory signal, which has been obtained using an inductive plethysmography belt, has been processed in real-time in order to classify the driver’s state of alertness as drowsy or awake. The proposed algorithm is based on the analysis of the respiratory rate variability (RRV) in order to detect the fight against to fall asleep. Moreover, a method to provide a quality level of the respiratory signal is also proposed. Both methods have been combined to reduce false alarms due to changes of measured RRV associated not to drowsiness but body movements. A driving simulator cabin has been used to perform the validation tests and external observers have rated the drivers’ state of alertness in order to evaluate the algorithm performance. It has been achieved a specificity of 96.6%, sensitivity of 90.3% and Cohen’s Kappa agreement score of 0.75 on average across all subjects through a leave-one-subject-out cross-validation.     OpenDriver: an open-road driver state detection dataset

    In modern society, road safety relies heavily on the psychological and physiological state of drivers. Negative factors such as fatigue, drowsiness, and stress can impair drivers' reaction time and decision making abilities, leading to an increased incidence of traffic accidents. Among the numerous studies for impaired driving detection, wearable physiological measurement is a real-time approach to monitoring a driver's state. However, currently, there are few driver physiological datasets in open road scenarios and the existing datasets suffer from issues such as poor signal quality, small sample sizes, and short data collection periods. Therefore, in this paper, a large-scale multimodal driving dataset for driver impairment detection and biometric data recognition is designed and described. The dataset contains two modalities of driving signals: six-axis inertial signals and electrocardiogram (ECG) signals, which were recorded while over one hundred drivers were following the same route through open roads during several months. Both the ECG signal sensor and the six-axis inertial signal sensor are installed on a specially designed steering wheel cover, allowing for data collection without disturbing the driver. Additionally, electrodermal activity (EDA) signals were also recorded during the driving process and will be integrated into the presented dataset soon. Future work can build upon this dataset to advance the field of driver impairment detection. New methods can be explored for integrating other types of biometric signals, such as eye tracking, to further enhance the understanding of driver states. The insights gained from this dataset can also inform the development of new driver assistance systems, promoting safer driving practices and reducing the risk of traffic accidents.     A systematic review of physiological signals based driver drowsiness detection systems.

    Driving a vehicle is a complex, multidimensional, and potentially risky activity demanding full mobilization and utilization of physiological and cognitive abilities. Drowsiness, often caused by stress, fatigue, and illness declines cognitive capabilities that affect drivers' capability and cause many accidents. Drowsiness-related road accidents are associated with trauma, physical injuries, and fatalities, and often accompany economic loss. Drowsy-related crashes are most common in young people and night shift workers. Real-time and accurate driver drowsiness detection is necessary to bring down the drowsy driving accident rate. Many researchers endeavored for systems to detect drowsiness using different features related to vehicles, and drivers' behavior, as well as, physiological measures. Keeping in view the rising trend in the use of physiological measures, this study presents a comprehensive and systematic review of the recent techniques to detect driver drowsiness using physiological signals. Different sensors augmented with machine learning are utilized which subsequently yield better results. These techniques are analyzed with respect to several aspects such as data collection sensor, environment consideration like controlled or dynamic, experimental set up like real traffic or driving simulators, etc. Similarly, by investigating the type of sensors involved in experiments, this study discusses the advantages and disadvantages of existing studies and points out the research gaps. Perceptions and conceptions are made to provide future research directions for drowsiness detection techniques based on physiological signals.     Introdução: A fadiga é um estado complexo que pode resultar em diminuição da vigilância, frequentemente acompanhada de sonolência. A fadiga durante a condução contribui significativamente para acidentes de trânsito em todo o mundo, destacando-se a necessidade de técnicas de monitorização eficazes. Existem várias tecnologias para aumentar a segurança do condutor e reduzir os riscos de acidentes, como sistemas de deteção de fadiga que podem alertar os condutores à medida que a sonolência se instala. Em particular, a análise dos padrões de frequência cardíaca pode oferecer informações valiosas sobre a condição fisiológica e o nível de vigilância do condutor, permitindo-lhe compreender os seus níveis de fadiga. Esta revisão tem como objetivo estabelecer o estado atual das estratégias de monitorização para ocupantes de veículos, com foco específico na avaliação da fadiga pela frequência cardíaca e variabilidade da frequência cardíaca. Métodos: Realizamos uma pesquisa sistemática da literatura nas bases de dados Web of Science, SCOPUS e Pubmed, utilizando os termos veículo, condutor, monitoração fisiológica, fadiga, sono, eletrocardiograma, frequência cardíaca e variabilidade da frequência cardíaca. Examinamos artigos publicados entre 1 de janeiro de 2018 e 31 de janeiro de 2023. Resultados: Um total de 371 artigos foram identificados, dos quais 71 foram incluídos neste estudo. Entre os artigos incluídos, 57 utilizam o eletrocardiograma (ECG) como sinal adquirido para medir a frequência cardíaca, sendo que a maioria das leituras de ECG foi obtida através de sensores de contacto (n=41), seguidos por sensores vestíveis não invasivos (n=11). Relativamente à validação, 23 artigos não mencionam qualquer tipo de validação, enquanto a maioria se baseia em avaliações subjetivas de fadiga relatadas pelos próprios participantes (n=27) e avaliações feitas por observadores com base em vídeos (n=11). Dos artigos incluídos, apenas 14 englobam um sistema de estimativa de fadiga e sonolência. Alguns relatam um desempenho satisfatórios, no entanto, o tamanho reduzido da amostra limita a abrangência de quaisquer conclusões. Conclusão: Esta revisão destaca o potencial da análise da frequência cardíaca e da instrumentação não invasiva para a monitorização contínua do estado do condutor e deteção de sonolência. Uma das principais questões é a falta de métodos suficientes de validação e estimativa para a fadiga, o que contribui para a insuficiência dos métodos na criação de sistemas de alarme proativos. Esta área apresenta grandes perspetivas, mas ainda está longe de ser implementada de forma fiável.Background: Fatigue is a complex state that can result in decreased alertness, often accompanied by drowsiness. Driving fatigue has become a significant contributor to traffic accidents globally, highlighting the need for effective monitoring techniques. Various technologies exist to enhance driver safety and minimize accident risks, such as fatigue detection systems that can alert drivers as drowsiness sets in. In particular, measuring heart rate patterns may offer valuable insights into the occupant's physiological condition and level of alertness, and may allow them to understand their fatigue levels. This review aims to establish the current state of the art of monitoring strategies for vehicle occupants, specifically focusing on fatigue assessed by heart rate and heart rate variability. Methods: We performed a systematic literature search in the databases of Web Of Science, SCOPUS and Pubmed, using the terms vehicle, driver, physiologic monitoring, fatigue, sleep, electrocardiogram, heart rate and heart rate variability. We examine articles published between 1st of january 2018 and 31st of January 2023. Results: A total of 371 papers were identified from which 71 articles were included in this study. Among the included papers, 57 utilized electrocardiogram (ECG) as the acquired signal for heart rate (HR) measures, with most ECG readings obtained through contact sensors (n=41), followed by non-intrusive wearable sensors (n=11). From the included papers, only 14 comprise a fatigue and drowsiness estimation system. Some report acceptable performances, but reduced sample size limits the reach of any conclusions. Conclusions: This review highlights the potential of HR analysis and non-intrusive instrumentation for continuous monitoring of driver's status and detecting sleepiness. One major issue is the lack of sufficient validation and estimation methods for fatigue, contributing to the insufficiency of methods in providing proactive alarm systems.     Using smartphone bases biodevices for analyzing physiological, psychological and behavioral user’s habits

    As a consequence of increasing life expectancy, the promotion of lifestyles that allow aging wellbeing guarantees has acquired great importance in the developed countries. However, the adherence to healthy behaviors in young and adult people remains as a big problem in the community health field. The development of markers of adherence to healthy lifestyles and the evaluation its effectiveness is a goal of many research groups. This paper presents a system for analyzing physiological, psychological and behavioural user’s habits using a smartphone and externals biodevices. We use an Android smartphone with an internal tri-axial accelerometer and GPS to monitor physical activity. The smartphone is connected via Bluetooth to a respiratory sensor for breath monitoring. In addition, Android application contains psychological questionnaires to analyze user’s mood state and at the same, social interaction is analyzed tracking phone usage and user’s social network. Finally, the collected information is sent to a remote server for a long-term processing.Postprint (published version

    In-cabin MIMO radar system for human dysfunctional breathing detection

    The integration of wireless sensors into the automotive industry is making vehicles increasingly safe and autonomous. At present, vehicles are equipped with external sensors that facilitate maneuverability and braking and internal sensors that detect presence, seat belt state, and occupant vital signs. Early detection of dysfunctional breathing patterns can reduce the risk of accidents caused by drowsiness or fatigue. In this regard, this work presents an MIMO FMCW Radar System able to distinguish dysfunctional breathing patterns from human torso motion. The torso has been divided into six regions, and the amplitude of the elongation and the frequency of motion of each region have been measured during breathing. An elongation map is then constructed in order to graphically show the dysfunctional breathing patterns. The signal processing includes a peak search algorithm to detect elongation amplitude and a bandpass frequency filter to minimize dc components, random driver motion, and vehicle vibration. A torso elongation emulator phantom has been assembled with materials of skin-like relative permittivity and dc motors for calibration and validation of basic breathing patterns. Finally, the signal of the system is compared with that of a commercial respiration belt, and then the system is tested by performing measurements on people.     Wearable in-ear pulse oximetry: theory and applications

    Wearable health technology, most commonly in the form of the smart watch, is employed by millions of users worldwide. These devices generally exploit photoplethysmography (PPG), the non-invasive use of light to measure blood volume, in order to track physiological metrics such as pulse and respiration. Moreover, PPG is commonly used in hospitals in the form of pulse oximetry, which measures light absorbance by the blood at different wavelengths of light to estimate blood oxygen levels (SpO2). This thesis aims to demonstrate that despite its widespread usage over many decades, this sensor still possesses a wealth of untapped value. Through a combination of advanced signal processing and harnessing the ear as a location for wearable sensing, this thesis introduces several novel high impact applications of in-ear pulse oximetry and photoplethysmography. The aims of this thesis are accomplished through a three pronged approach: rapid detection of hypoxia, tracking of cognitive workload and fatigue, and detection of respiratory disease. By means of the simultaneous recording of in-ear and finger pulse oximetry at rest and during breath hold tests, it was found that in-ear SpO2 responds on average 12.4 seconds faster than the finger SpO2. This is likely due in part to the ear being in close proximity to the brain, making it a priority for oxygenation and thus making wearable in-ear SpO2 a good proxy for core blood oxygen. Next, the low latency of in-ear SpO2 was further exploited in the novel application of classifying cognitive workload. It was found that in-ear pulse oximetry was able to robustly detect tiny decreases in blood oxygen during increased cognitive workload, likely caused by increased brain metabolism. This thesis demonstrates that in-ear SpO2 can be used to accurately distinguish between different levels of an N-back memory task, representing different levels of mental effort. This concept was further validated through its application to gaming and then extended to the detection of driver related fatigue. It was found that features derived from SpO2 and PPG were predictive of absolute steering wheel angle, which acts as a proxy for fatigue. The strength of in-ear PPG for the monitoring of respiration was investigated with respect to the finger, with the conclusion that in-ear PPG exhibits far stronger respiration induced intensity variations and pulse amplitude variations than the finger. All three respiratory modes were harnessed through multivariate empirical mode decomposition (MEMD) to produce spirometry-like respiratory waveforms from PPG. It was discovered that these PPG derived respiratory waveforms can be used to detect obstruction to breathing, both through a novel apparatus for the simulation of breathing disorders and through the classification of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the real world. This thesis establishes in-ear pulse oximetry as a wearable technology with the potential for immense societal impact, with applications from the classification of cognitive workload and the prediction of driver fatigue, through to the detection of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The experiments and analysis in this thesis conclusively demonstrate that widely used pulse oximetry and photoplethysmography possess a wealth of untapped value, in essence teaching the old PPG sensor new tricks.Open Acces

    Multimodal Features for Detection of Driver Stress and Fatigue: Review

    Driver fatigue and stress significantly contribute to higher number of car accidents worldwide. Although, different detection approaches have been already commercialized and used by car producers (and third party companies), research activities in this field are still needed in order to increase the reliability of these alert systems. Also, in the context of automated driving, the driver mental state assessment will be an important part of cars in future. This paper presents state-of-the-art review of different approaches for driver fatigue and stress detection and evaluation. We describe in details various signals (biological, car and video) and derived features used for these tasks and we discuss their relevance and advantages.
