    Key technologies for safe and autonomous drones

    Drones/UAVs are able to perform air operations that are very difficult to be performed by manned aircrafts. In addition, drones' usage brings significant economic savings and environmental benefits, while reducing risks to human life. In this paper, we present key technologies that enable development of drone systems. The technologies are identified based on the usages of drones (driven by COMP4DRONES project use cases). These technologies are grouped into four categories: U-space capabilities, system functions, payloads, and tools. Also, we present the contributions of the COMP4DRONES project to improve existing technologies. These contributions aim to ease drones’ customization, and enable their safe operation.This project has received funding from the ECSEL Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 826610. The JU receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and Spain, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands. The total project budget is 28,590,748.75 EUR (excluding ESIF partners), while the requested grant is 7,983,731.61 EUR to ECSEL JU, and 8,874,523.84 EUR of National and ESIF Funding.     Airborne Hyperspectral Imaging of Lakes

    In a time of rising concern about climate change and pollution, the water quality of large lakes acts as an indicator of the health of the environment. To study the water quality at a large scale - up to several hundreds of kilometres - hyperspectral remote sensing is emerging as the main solution. Indeed, different quantities relevant to water quality, like turbidity or concentratrion in chlorophyll-a, can be measured using the spectral reflectance of the water column. Additionally, airborne and spaceborne sensors can cover large areas, thus allowing to study the water at a much larger scale than when simply taking water samples at specific points. Airborne hyperspectral imaging, in particular, offers an acceptable ground resolution - around a metre - which allows to map relevant quantities precisely. However, few existing projects deliver maps that have both a sufficient ground resolution and a large coverage. Furthermore, most existing sensors do not offer a fine spectral resolution, which is for instance crucial when studying the presence of chlorophyll-a, which can only be detected in a narrow range of the electromagnetic spectrum. This thesis presents our work with a hyperspectral sensor developed and used by the Geodetic Engineering Laboratory of EPFL in the LĂ©man-BaĂŻkal project, a cooperative work which aimed at studying both Lake Geneva (Switzerland) and Lake Baikal (Russia). The project included ultralight plane flights with an onboard pushbroom scanner, which allowed to collect data over large areas with a fine spectral resolution. Alongside the use of this sensor came problematics which are at the centre of this thesis: the georeferencing of the scan lines, their radiometric calibration, their analysis and the softwaremanagement of this data. In the following, we present a new method to georeference pushbroom scan lines that uses co-acquired frame images to perform coregistration and to achieve a georeferencing, which RMSE is up to 20 times smaller than the direct one. We propose an efficient radiometric self-calibration method to convert the sensor output to water-leaving reflectance; this method makes use of the visible peaks of atmospheric absorption to align the spectral bands with those of a reference acquisition, and uses the near infrared properties of deep water and vegetation to performabsolute calibration. The last part of the processing - the software management, including data compression - was solved by developing a software called HYPerspectral Orthorectification Software (HypOS). This software is the synthesis of our work, including the tools to performgeometric correction, radiometric calibration and data compression of our hyperspectral data. Two examples of applications are given: the first one deals with mapping chlorophyll-a in the Rhone Delta of Lake Geneva; the second, at a larger scale, uses satellite data to monitor ice coverage over large lakes like Onega or Ladoga (Russia)

    Mining Technologies Innovative Development

    The present book covers the main challenges, important for future prospects of subsoils extraction as a public effective and profitable business, as well as technologically advanced industry. In the near future, the mining industry must overcome the problems of structural changes in raw materials demand and raise the productivity up to the level of high-tech industries to maintain the profits.     Radar target classification by micro-Doppler contributions

    This thesis studies non-cooperative automatic radar target classification. Recent developments in silicon-germanium and monolithic microwave integrated circuit technologies allows to build cheap and powerful continuous wave radars. Availability of radars opens new applications in different areas. One of these applications is security. Radars could be used for surveillance of huge areas and detect unwanted moving objects. Determination of the type of the target is essential for such systems. Microwave radars use high frequencies that reflect from objects of millimetre size. The micro-Doppler signature of a target is a time-varying frequency modulated contribution that arose in radar backscattering and caused by the relative movement of separate parts of the target. The micro-Doppler phenomenon allows to classify non-rigid moving objects by analysing their signatures. This thesis is focused on designing of automatic target classification systems based on analysis of micro-Doppler signatures. Analysis of micro-Doppler radar signatures is usually performed by second-order statistics, i.e. common energy-based power spectra and spectrogram. However, the information about phase coupling content in backscattering is totally lost in these energy-based statistics. This useful phase coupling content can be extracted by higher-order spectral techniques. We show that this content is useful for radar target classification in terms of improved robustness to various corruption factors. A problem of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) classification using continuous wave radar is covered in the thesis. All steps of processing required to make a decision out of the raw radar data are considered. A novel feature extraction method is introduced. It is based on eigenpairs extracted from the correlation matrix of the signature. Different classes of UAVs are successfully separated in feature space by support vector machine. Within experiments or real radar data, achieved high classification accuracy proves the efficiency of the proposed solutions. Thesis also covers several applications of the automotive radar due to very high growth in technologies for intelligent vehicle radar systems. Such radars are already build-in in the vehicle and ready for new applications. We consider two novel applications. First application is a multi-sensor fusion of video camera and radar for more efficient vehicle-to-vehicle video transmission. Second application is a frequency band invariant pedestrian classification by an automotive radar. This system allows us to use the same signal processing hardware/software for different countries where regulations vary and radars with different operating frequency are required. We consider different radar applications: ground moving target classification, aerial target classification, unmanned aerial vehicles classification, pedestrian classification. The highest priority is given to verification of proposed methods on real radar data collected with frequencies equal to 9.5, 10, 16.8, 24 and 33 GHz
