Hybridization of multi-objective deterministic particle swarm with derivative-free local searches
The paper presents a multi-objective derivative-free and deterministic global/local hybrid algorithm for the efficient and effective solution of simulation-based design optimization (SBDO) problems. The objective is to show how the hybridization of two multi-objective derivative-free global and local algorithms achieves better performance than the separate use of the two algorithms in solving specific SBDO problems for hull-form design. The proposed method belongs to the class of memetic algorithms, where the global exploration capability of multi-objective deterministic particle swarm optimization is enriched by exploiting the local search accuracy of a derivative-free multi-objective line-search method. To the authors best knowledge, studies are still limited on memetic, multi-objective, deterministic, derivative-free, and evolutionary algorithms for an effective and efficient solution of SBDO for hull-form design. The proposed formulation manages global and local searches based on the hypervolume metric. The hybridization scheme uses two parameters to control the local search activation and the number of function calls used by the local algorithm. The most promising values of these parameters were identified using forty analytical tests representative of the SBDO problem of interest. The resulting hybrid algorithm was finally applied to two SBDO problems for hull-form design. For both analytical tests and SBDO problems, the hybrid method achieves better performance than its global and local counterparts

Optimum reactive power compensation for distribution system using dolphin algorithm considering different load models
The distribution system represents the connection between consumers and the entire power network. The radial structure is preferred for distribution system due to its simple design and low cost. The electrical distribution system suffers from problems of rising power losses higher than the transmission system and voltage drop. One of the important solutions to improve the voltage profile and to reduce the electrical distribution system losses is the reactive power compensation which is based on the optimum choice of position and capacitor size in the network. In this paper, different models of electrical loads such as constant power(P), constant current(I), constant impedance(Z), and composite (ZIP) model are implemented with comparisons between them in order to identify the most effective load type that produces the optimal settlement for alleged loss reduction ,enhancement of the voltage profile, and cost savings. To minimize search space, Dolphin Optimization Algorithm (DOA) is applied for selecting the size and location of capacitors. Two case studies (IEEE 16- bus and 33- bus) are employed to evaluate the different load models with optimal reactive power compensation. The results of comparison between the different load models show that ZIP model is the best to produce the optimum solution for capacitor position and size. In addition, comparison of results with literature works are done and showed that DOA is the most robust among other algorithms to achieve the optimum solution for voltage profile enhancement significant reduction of losses, and saving cost
Ant-colony and nature-inspired heuristic models for NOMA systems: a review
The increasing computational complexity in scheduling the large number of users for non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system and future cellular networks lead to the need for scheduling models with relatively lower computational complexity such as heuristic models. The main objective of this paper is to conduct a concise study on ant-colony optimization (ACO) methods and potential nature-inspired heuristic models for NOMA implementation in future high-speed networks. The issues, challenges and future work of ACO and other related heuristic models in NOMA are concisely reviewed. The throughput result of the proposed ACO method is observed to be close to the maximum theoretical value and stands 44% higher than that of the existing method. This result demonstrates the effectiveness of ACO implementation for NOMA user scheduling and grouping
Performance of the Modified Dolphin Monitoring Operator for Weight Optimization of Skeletal Structures
In this study, the Modified Dolphin Monitoring (MDM) operator is used to enhance the performance of some metaheuristic algorithms. The MDM is a recently presented operator that controls the population dispersion in each iteration. Algorithms are selected from some well-established algorithms. Here, this operator is applied on Differential Evolution (DE), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Vibrating Particles System (VPS), Enhanced Vibrating Particles System (EVPS), Colliding Bodied Optimization (CBO) and Harmony Search (HS) and the performance of these algorithms are evaluated with and without this operator on three well-known structural optimization problems. The results show the performance of this operator on these algorithms for the best, the worst, average and average weight of the first quarter of answers
Hull-form optimization of a luxury yacht under deterministic and stochastic operating conditions via global derivative-free algorithms
Simulation-based design optimization (SBDO) techniques are used in the shape
design of complex engineering systems. SBDO methods integrate an optimization algorithm,
a tool for the design modification, and analysis tools. In the context of ship/ocean
applica- tions the objective function is often noisy, its derivatives are not directly
provided and local minima cannot be excluded, therefore global derivative-free algorithms
are widely used. The objective of this work is to investigate the efficiency of three global
deterministic derivative-free optimization algorithms for the deterministic and stochastic
hull-form optimization of a luxury yacht. Particle Swarm Optimization (DPSO), Dolphin Pod
Optimization (DPO), and DIviding RECTangles (DIRECT) are applied to reduce the total resistance
over a variety of conditions. The approach includes a comparison of the performances of the
optimization algorithms, based on deterministic results for two separate operating conditions.
DPSO is identified as the most promising optimization algorithm and is used for the robust
design optimization (RDO) per- formed considering a stochastic variation of the cruise
speed with uniform distribution within a speed range from 8 to 16 kn. The resistance
curve of deterministic and robust solutions is finally presented
Optimal coordinated design of PSS and UPFC-POD using DEO algorithm to enhance damping performance
Low-frequency oscillations (LFO) are an inevitable problem of power systems and they have a great effect on the capability of transfer and power system stability. The power system stabilizers (PSSs) as well as flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices can help to damp LFO. The target of this study is to tackle the problem of a dual-coordinated design between PSS and unified power flow controller (UPFC) implementing the task of power oscillation damping (POD) controller in a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system. So, dolphin echolocation optimization (DEO) technique is utilized as an optimization tool to search for optimal parameter tunings based on objective function for enhancing the dynamic stability performance for a SMIB. DEO an algorithm has a few parameters, simple rules, provides the optimum result and is applicable to a wide range of problems like other meta-heuristic algorithms. Use DEO gave the best results in damping LFO compared to particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. From the comparison results between PSO and DEO, it was shown that DEO provides faster settling time, less overshoot, higher damping oscillations and greatly improves system stability. Also, the comparison results prove that the multiple stabilizers show supremacy over independent controllers in mitigationg LFO of a SMIB
